@cooey2ph because they used their horses as battering rams or wedges, so they had to protect their horses. AND when they NOT use their shields enemy was more demoralized =) (Riders formation hadn't been broken even if some of riders died without using any defense)

just think that THIS is how battles use to be fought, thousands vs thousands charging on steeds against a wall of spears/shields, where every man's courage added strength to the army. THIS is what real battle is, not what our wars are today, THESE battles were one army vs another and only them, THESE were fought for something, to protect or conquer each side had a reason. If i could go back in time it would be to see the awe inspiring battles fought.

you see both castle's of the king are made up on hill's with villages around them!
