  • * 1) Still Life 2) My Arms, Your Hearse

joint 3) Blackwater Park & Ghost Reveries

    [since you asked]

  • I actually agree; apart from the first two records, Deliverance is arguably my least favourite Opeth album. The thing is though, it's still fucking superb, and has better collective material than most bands manage in their careers. For this reason, Opeth are quite possibly my favourite band of all time

  • what the fuck, Deliverance is amazing, literally from start to finish. it's just as well written as Still Life, Blackwater Park, and pretty much anything else they've put out.

  • Deliverance their worst album? Funny , i love every track on that album =P

  • opeth's worst album? hmm thats really hard. i cant say which one i like least.

my favourite is ghost reveries, or maybe blackwater park, closely followed by still life and damnation

  • Every Opeth album is better than the other ones.

  • Interesting discussion here about which Opeth album is the best. I think the best Opeth album is the one you are just listening to :-)

  • he says that deliverance is one of the worst is because he hates by the pain I see in others, is one of my favorites song from opeth, but for mikael, is the worst song D:

  • Deliverance was amazing! The entire album!

  • I don't think you actually can rank their albums. I mean, it's actually impossible to do it.

  • Actually, i love the album deliverance. He said in another interview that he doesn't like "by the pain i see in others" but that's gotta be one of my favorite songs of the album! i don't get it... lol

  • @lurxtlifeson well he maybe didnt felt it too much, but the rest of the band did, so thats why it worked..

  • Still Life > Ghost Reveries > Blackwater Park> Deliverance > Damnation > Orchid > Morningrise > MAYH > Watershed

  • @69swipe Watershed is the most underrated album by Opeth.

  • @69swipe My order would be: Orchid>Blackwater Park>Morningrise>Ghost Reveries>Deliverance>Watershed>Still Life>Damnation>My Arms Your Hearse

  • orchid = morningrise = my arms your hearse = still life = blackwater park = deliverance = damnation = ghost reveries = watershed. yeah, i think opeth rocks.

  • 'damnation our best, deliverance is our worst'? Hmmm...I suppose it's not surprising that their 70s prog homage album is his favourite, but I would say that ghost reveries is one of the worst, as I think that's the only album I can actually find flaws with - not a bad track, I just feel that it's rather broken up with the order and mixing of heavy and mellow tracks. that works fine on watershed, though, i think.

  • I would agree but Ghost of Perdition, Hours of Wealth, and Herlequin forest are 3 of their best songs in my opinion.

  • @69swipe I think Ghost reveries is just a fantastic record in general!

  • @69swipe Good taste mate, good taste.

  • Still Life > Ghost Reveries > Blackwater Park > Deliverance > Damnation > Watershed.

  • @And0hlajni Damnation should be somewhere at the top man, fantastic album.

  • Blackwater Park > Ghost Reveries > Watershed > Deliverance > Damnation > Still Life

  • dude how can you put still life last? its way better than watershed

  • @And0hlajni Looks like you still need to hear older albums. I only need to get orchid now. It's really difficult to choose which albums are best. Here's my rough list in order of preference:

    Morningrise>Watershed>My Arms your Hearse>Blackwater Park>Still Life>Deliverance>Ghost reveries>Damnation.

  • @And0hlajni Like I said, that's just an attempt - my preference of one album over another changes all the time, especially as I listen to some opeth albums more often than others and often forget how amazing some are.

  • he mumbles a lot!...

  • English isn't his first language. He's probably a bit self-conscious when he speaks.

  • i know dude ;) i know he's from sweden :)

  • yeah... but hes fucking mikael!!!

  • 2:40 - 3:00

    word!

  • Watershed isn't nearly as good as Blackwater Park or Still Life, but I still really enjoy it.

  • I really think Ghost Reveries is their best. Blackwater Park is a close second.

  • Blackwater Park is the best Opeth album, period.

  • totally agree!

  • You got that right! Opeth is awesome!!!

  • People who think watershed is shit is basically because they dont like Psychedelic music, if thats true they don;t like The Zombies. Mikael writes music by what inspires him at the time, he even says he was listening to a shit load of The Zombies during the recording of Watershed. So lay off it for god sakes!

  • the best opeth record is watershed

  • Blackwater.

  • not really, the only good song was patterns in the ivy and blackwater park

  • Oh comeon...get real!!...i know its a brilliant album, but to call it the BEST Opeth record is too much...

  • the only one that comes close to being better is blackwater park, watershed is the best.

  • well..thats your opinion!...i would say Still Life and My Arms Your Hearse are better than Blackwater Park

  • yep sake has it right. still life and mayh are the best by far.

  • I think that Damnation is one of the BEST albums

  • only opeth album I don't like so far is Damnation. Not because it's mostly acoustic, I just feel it's very uninspired. Almost like Opeth are forcing themselves to create an entirely acoustic/rock record, despite on other albums being able to create some mindblowingly melodic stuff

  • But in my opinion it has a flow that is unique to that album.

  • Mikael Akerfeldt "Because all bands made shit to shit records, and we havent (chuckles)" yes indeed you've never had a lame album EVER! Opeth is a legend soo much that'll i'll make my grand children listen to it :D [Quote from "Beyond Ghost Reveries Documentry" on Ghost Reveries DVD]

  • watershed is the best ever

  • <3 opeth

  • deliverance is the worst? well 3 songs that make that album incredibly amazing, a fair judgement, deliverance, masters apprentices :P well i dont think opeth have a worst album they are all amazing

  • na that album is also great, its just different, the songwriting is equally as good as before, its just in a slightly diff style

  • I didn't say Watershed was bad in any way.. it's just not as good as the rest of the albums, and thus relatively bad in a Opeth context. ;)

  • @SlaveExplosion Not worst, only less amazing.

  • @SlaveExplosion totally agree man. Deliverance, A Fair Judgement and Masters Apprentices are one of Opeth's very best songs, IMO. A Fair Judgement is just epic!!!

  • @SlaveExplosion You drove the nail right through the fucking head! When I first heard heard that album I wasn't that impressed, or I guess I should say I was a little skeptical of it. After listens upon listens of that album I have fallen in love with that album. The Three songs you've mentioned will go down in infamy as some of the best Opeth songs ever, not to mention 3 of the top 10 favorites of mines that Opeth has ever written. Hail Opeth!!!

  • @SlaveExplosion yeah i dont get that, deliverance is my favorite song by them.

  • Jesus i love this guy. His passion for music just makes you want to listen more or play more. Truly inspiring artists both he and Steven Wilson.

  • does mikael not like deliverance?? I know he doesnt like the song By the Pain I see in others which is on that album...

  • I know, I think that album is kickass, and tbh By The Pain I See in Others is my favourite song on it!

  • A lot of musicians are critical of their own work.. Whether it be that the writer didn't like it from the start, but the other band members did, or they played it so much that it got tiresome. There are many reasons for it.

Great videos by the way. Thanks to the uploader.

  • I agree with joeytiago, Opeth have no worst album. How can anybody say Watershed is shit? It's amazing. After all these years they're still making amazing music and even pulling some suprises. If the day comes they can't make geat music is the day they'll split

  • The day Opeth stops making good music is the day I die.

  • Deliverance is by no means their worst. That's Watershed.

  • Well its your opinion

  • Thankyou for stating the obvious.

  • Well you are entitled to your own opinion.

Im not going to give you a hard time about it.

  • Deliverence worst? What are you talking about micke?

  • Opeth has no worst album. Everything is too amazing.

  • Yes, I have to agree with you, even though I have a special love for Morningrise and Deliverance, Opeth has no worst album.

  • I consider all Opeth beautiful. No worst and no best. It is all a representation of the ataraxia that Opeth brings with their music.

  • the part where he talks about honesty in music is cool.

  • I think I woudn´t like Porcupine to be one of the most popular bands in the world. There are only a few people I know that are real PT-fans, and if PT becomes as famous as, dare I say it, Metallica, (bad example, I know) I woudn't have that special band anymore, that 'only I know of', you know?

  • News flash: PT is pretty well known.

  • True. I went to their show in Houston last October, and the venue isn't really big, but it's a fairly popular venue for metal and punk shows. But the crowd for Porcupine Tree was HUGE! I didn't even think there were that many PT fans in my area, but I was surprised.

It was the most crowded show I've been to at that venue. What sucked is that I had to leave early because a friend of mine smoked during the show and got kicked out. Oh well, it was worth the ticket price to see 3.

  • I wonder if he's confused the Damnation and Deliverance albums, because he says "Damnation, which is a metal album" -- Deliverance is the metal album, Damnation is the clean/acoustic one. Hmm.

  • He isn't saying "metal", he's saying "mellow". So I guess that makes you the confused one?

  • Hm, good call. Sounds like both to me!

  • helo wat is proucpine tere/?

  • Obvious Troll is Obvious.

  • This is not /b/.

I commend your spreading of cancer.

  • ow man i LOVE bu the pain i see in others! great song. not the best vocals ever thou...

  • DELIVERANCE? worst? no way, i love that album!!!! hes being to hard on himself.

  • Well, he has said that "By the Pain I See in Others" is his least favorite Opeth song, and while I admit that those several minutes of silence could have been cut, it's hardly a bad song, even by Opeth's standards. By many other bands, it would be their best song ever.

  • lol fuck up the sounds alittle bit!

  • Of course Porcupine Tree aren't, and never will be, really popular. They play good, thoughtful music. Most people want crap, plus there's a massive marketing machine out there promoting crap. Most people will never get what someone like Steve Wilson is on about.

  • Spot on! Mainstream music sucks these days...

  • How about Damnation? For me it's one of their best:) Fuckin' great!

  • if u made a "worst of opeth" album it would still be FUCKING SICK

  • lol i agree.

  • You are so fucking right. lmao

  • I wouldn't say Deliverance is their worst, Morningrise on the other hand...

  • morningrise was an awesome record! IMO still life was the most average compared to everything else they did. I know many other opeth fans would disagree with me.

  • r u kidding deliverance fuck'n rules

  • he first two tracks are a bit...hmm, but 'for absent friends' 'master's apprentice' and 'by the pain i see in others' have great parts to them.

  • around 2:40 when he talks about how Porcupine Tree is less popular than it should be, I was thinking that the first time I heard them.

  • Does anybody Know his Top 5 favorite bands?????

  • He mentionned Camel quite a few times also he did mention the underground band Comus from which he took lyrics for some some song titles and the album My Arms Your Hearse is a quote from a Comus song.

  • i wont belive Deliverance is opeth worst...i think he was talking bout the finance part of it

i love each and every track from deliverance.

and porcupine tree is awesome too.

  • Yeah, i love deliverance

Steve Wilson said that Mikael was having a rough time when they were recording that, and getting all the backing and stuff wasnt working for Mikael, so maye thats what he meant

    =]

  • BLACKWATER PARK <3

  • I love that Mikael is so honest. He's willing to say that one of the albums he did with Steven was their worst, but that doesn't change his appreciation for Porcupine Tree. I found Porcupine Tree through Opeth and it has opened a world of music I never though I'd find. Amazing.

  • "they're pretty big, but they should be.... the biggest band in the world"

  • "like thunder from hell" ;:D

  • "Good and honest" music is pretty much spot on.

  • "Deliverance" - one of Opeth's worst? Are you high, Mikael?

  • no. it is, though it's still amazing :D

  • he said in another video that he hated the recording process because of the location and interior of the studio and that that along with some other things has always tainted his opinion of it.

  • I don't know, Deliverance is one of their heaviest albums. The ones I listen to the least are Orchid, Morningrise, and Damnation. But to be fair I listened to them non-stop when I first got them.

  • whao I am shock that Mikael was such a big fan of PT and the other way around with Steve Wilson cool interview. Mikeal is such a humble guy Opeth/Porcupine Tree.

  • Porcupine Tree.

  • I like all opeth records, Morningrise is my best.

And maybe i'll give Ghost reveries a few more listens

  • Morningrise is their best. I dislike BWP the most :P.

  • All the records are great!

  • I can't really decide what are the worst albums IMO, but I know for a fact Orchid and Morningrise are the two farthest from it. They're my faves (this was the kinda Opeth I preferred, though I still <3), especially because I love awesome basslines and no one with ears can deny Johan Defarfalla is a damn godly bassist (and IMO it was a bad move for Opeth to part ways with him).

  • martin mendez is pretty amazing and subtle himself... listen closely to some of his basslines

  • Agreed. I'm sure any musician approved of

by Akerfeldt is superb. Mendez is my own preference, though.

  • What the fuck? Orchid the worst record? Fuck. That. Cool video.

  • Are you guys freakin morons?

Opeth Did NOT bring out bad albums..

Some albums are less good, but they're not shitty ;)

Nice jacket Mikael, goin back to the 80's? :P

  • haha, i was thinking this reading the other comments

    shame you got there first

  • nah morningrise is ace.. Worst record is Orchid.

  • In no way is Deliverance their worst record. That award would go to Morningrise imo.

  • agreed, i love black rose immortal though. and i love a fair judgement from deliverance

  • Opeth don't really have any bad albums. In fact I think all their albums 'above average' at least

  • Opeth can't make bad records...
