I actually agree; apart from the first two records, Deliverance is arguably my least favourite Opeth album. The thing is though, it's still fucking superb, and has better collective material than most bands manage in their careers. For this reason, Opeth are quite possibly my favourite band of all time
what the fuck, Deliverance is amazing, literally from start to finish. it's just as well written as Still Life, Blackwater Park, and pretty much anything else they've put out.
he says that deliverance is one of the worst is because he hates by the pain I see in others, is one of my favorites song from opeth, but for mikael, is the worst song D:
Actually, i love the album deliverance. He said in another interview that he doesn't like "by the pain i see in others" but that's gotta be one of my favorite songs of the album! i don't get it... lol
orchid = morningrise = my arms your hearse = still life = blackwater park = deliverance = damnation = ghost reveries = watershed. yeah, i think opeth rocks.
'damnation our best, deliverance is our worst'? Hmmm...I suppose it's not surprising that their 70s prog homage album is his favourite, but I would say that ghost reveries is one of the worst, as I think that's the only album I can actually find flaws with - not a bad track, I just feel that it's rather broken up with the order and mixing of heavy and mellow tracks. that works fine on watershed, though, i think.
@And0hlajni Looks like you still need to hear older albums. I only need to get orchid now. It's really difficult to choose which albums are best. Here's my rough list in order of preference:
Morningrise>Watershed>My Arms your Hearse>Blackwater Park>Still Life>Deliverance>Ghost reveries>Damnation.
@And0hlajni Like I said, that's just an attempt - my preference of one album over another changes all the time, especially as I listen to some opeth albums more often than others and often forget how amazing some are.
People who think watershed is shit is basically because they dont like Psychedelic music, if thats true they don;t like The Zombies. Mikael writes music by what inspires him at the time, he even says he was listening to a shit load of The Zombies during the recording of Watershed. So lay off it for god sakes!
only opeth album I don't like so far is Damnation. Not because it's mostly acoustic, I just feel it's very uninspired. Almost like Opeth are forcing themselves to create an entirely acoustic/rock record, despite on other albums being able to create some mindblowingly melodic stuff
Mikael Akerfeldt "Because all bands made shit to shit records, and we havent (chuckles)" yes indeed you've never had a lame album EVER! Opeth is a legend soo much that'll i'll make my grand children listen to it :D [Quote from "Beyond Ghost Reveries Documentry" on Ghost Reveries DVD]
deliverance is the worst? well 3 songs that make that album incredibly amazing, a fair judgement, deliverance, masters apprentices :P well i dont think opeth have a worst album they are all amazing
@SlaveExplosion totally agree man. Deliverance, A Fair Judgement and Masters Apprentices are one of Opeth's very best songs, IMO. A Fair Judgement is just epic!!!
@SlaveExplosion You drove the nail right through the fucking head! When I first heard heard that album I wasn't that impressed, or I guess I should say I was a little skeptical of it. After listens upon listens of that album I have fallen in love with that album. The Three songs you've mentioned will go down in infamy as some of the best Opeth songs ever, not to mention 3 of the top 10 favorites of mines that Opeth has ever written. Hail Opeth!!!
A lot of musicians are critical of their own work.. Whether it be that the writer didn't like it from the start, but the other band members did, or they played it so much that it got tiresome. There are many reasons for it.
I agree with joeytiago, Opeth have no worst album. How can anybody say Watershed is shit? It's amazing. After all these years they're still making amazing music and even pulling some suprises. If the day comes they can't make geat music is the day they'll split
I think I woudn´t like Porcupine to be one of the most popular bands in the world. There are only a few people I know that are real PT-fans, and if PT becomes as famous as, dare I say it, Metallica, (bad example, I know) I woudn't have that special band anymore, that 'only I know of', you know?
True. I went to their show in Houston last October, and the venue isn't really big, but it's a fairly popular venue for metal and punk shows. But the crowd for Porcupine Tree was HUGE! I didn't even think there were that many PT fans in my area, but I was surprised.
It was the most crowded show I've been to at that venue. What sucked is that I had to leave early because a friend of mine smoked during the show and got kicked out. Oh well, it was worth the ticket price to see 3.
I wonder if he's confused the Damnation and Deliverance albums, because he says "Damnation, which is a metal album" -- Deliverance is the metal album, Damnation is the clean/acoustic one. Hmm.
Well, he has said that "By the Pain I See in Others" is his least favorite Opeth song, and while I admit that those several minutes of silence could have been cut, it's hardly a bad song, even by Opeth's standards. By many other bands, it would be their best song ever.
Of course Porcupine Tree aren't, and never will be, really popular. They play good, thoughtful music. Most people want crap, plus there's a massive marketing machine out there promoting crap. Most people will never get what someone like Steve Wilson is on about.
morningrise was an awesome record! IMO still life was the most average compared to everything else they did. I know many other opeth fans would disagree with me.
He mentionned Camel quite a few times also he did mention the underground band Comus from which he took lyrics for some some song titles and the album My Arms Your Hearse is a quote from a Comus song.
Steve Wilson said that Mikael was having a rough time when they were recording that, and getting all the backing and stuff wasnt working for Mikael, so maye thats what he meant
I love that Mikael is so honest. He's willing to say that one of the albums he did with Steven was their worst, but that doesn't change his appreciation for Porcupine Tree. I found Porcupine Tree through Opeth and it has opened a world of music I never though I'd find. Amazing.
he said in another video that he hated the recording process because of the location and interior of the studio and that that along with some other things has always tainted his opinion of it.
I don't know, Deliverance is one of their heaviest albums. The ones I listen to the least are Orchid, Morningrise, and Damnation. But to be fair I listened to them non-stop when I first got them.
whao I am shock that Mikael was such a big fan of PT and the other way around with Steve Wilson cool interview. Mikeal is such a humble guy Opeth/Porcupine Tree.
I can't really decide what are the worst albums IMO, but I know for a fact Orchid and Morningrise are the two farthest from it. They're my faves (this was the kinda Opeth I preferred, though I still <3), especially because I love awesome basslines and no one with ears can deny Johan Defarfalla is a damn godly bassist (and IMO it was a bad move for Opeth to part ways with him).
