  • i know sayoc was derived from studying several fillipino arts and selecting what was determined as best; i also know that pekiti tersia was a major influence. was this drill pekiti derived? i ask because there are so few good pekiti free-form knife videos on youtube

  • BTW, when you are controlling the knife that's when your tapping and hubud comes in but you do not tap it as in the drill at all

  • I am sick of people saying you can't fight a knife. In a long career I've done it many times. Zone off, control the knife's gate are and punch the throat as hard as you can all at the same time then take the eyes (I've literally done this in one case) then do whatever you are happiest with. DO NOT GIVE THEM THE SLIGHTEST CHANCE OR YOU ARE DEAD. Once you hit them DO NOT STOP. Remember, they pulled a knife on you. The law will get it. Peace

  • alright is there anywhere, where I could watch a slower version lol. Any ideas anyone?

  • hi ST, honestly the best advice i can give you is to go learn them in a proper academy.. it will be counter productive to try to pick them up from a video :) gl

  • @SpirituallyTuned ..in a class

  • @SpirituallyTuned I sent you a link.

  • I wonder if anyone has the complete drills?..I know every Sayoc style has a slightly different version but the ending moves seem to be missing in all the demo vids..

  • this drill is Hubad issn't it?

and just a comment to all you ppl who write stupid things about this..

NEVER COMMENT THINGS YOU DON'T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT! OK?! study the martial arts befor you criticise it! ok?

  • i see my instructor in this vid :)

  • sorry - I know..training is better than nothing!! But in the end there is NO defense against a serious knife attack - except a 9mm!! And even this only if you`re a couple of metres away from the opponent...otherwise you won`t get the time to draw the gun.

  • sure, blades are the most dangerous close range weapons. but fact still reamains that:

a trained person has a MUCH bigger chance of survival than a non trained person..

  • No doubt about that!!

  • This stuff comes from the phillippines, remember, where knife attacks on the street are still a daily occurrance. Read the Manila police blotter sometime.

Even if you have a 2% chance of survival with one of these taps or strips, you're better off trying it than just sitting there and getting disemboweled.

Also, given knife law in the US and the preponderance of single-edged folders, your chances of performing certain strips are roughly 25% better.

    Also, there's the attribute training...

  • @carcosa you have alot better chance if you create distance and shoot. Disarms are a dangerous venture and mostly not functional outside of flow drills. It is a gamble obviously regardless of what you try. I have been doing FMA for around 20 years and still wouldn't trust an intentional disarm against a non secured mobile, hostile threat. Best disarm is a neutralizing offense.

  • Options are good.

  • If any body thinks thay can do better than Sayoc Kali or any other system...then do it! Otherwise shut the piehole and open your mind to learn from others! Bunch of useless armchair warriors!

  • Sayoc Kali has been misunderstood for years. It is as an intelligent system as any you will find. I think most are missing the boat when they criticize the structure of training all the while never understanding the premise behind the training. I can do the same with BJJ if I wanted to..crap all systems can be misconstrued. All I have to say to "nay-sayers" is if you can do better then why isn't your crap on the market? Do you really believe that you can do better?

  • This clip is amazing but i doubt if it can be applied in really life situations from the defenders seat,me myslef ive done thai boxing for 11 years and the only way to defend is to attack ,now sayoc i find it like aikido but with a knives.

but i can say its impresive

  • I find that this is very realistic... the drills teach you how to react and defend a knife attack from many different angles and points of attack... you have to realize these are templates not actual fight sequences. Templates are made to get you instinctively reacting to a situation or attack.

  • You guys are missing the point. If you take a minute to deconstruct, the genius of Sayoc kali as an insightful system, is the attackers ability to quarter fight or infight within the triangle concept. You can't look at this video literally, as I was amazed. If you hit the pause button from time to time, you can see what appears as failing is actually the defender getting tagged and controlled through the use of footwork.

  • these drills develope bad habits nobody fights like that, you get better reflexes by doing progressive sparring drills, because you always fight the way you train so doesnt make sense to train the way you fight?

  • unrealistic. You get killed getting this close to the knife.

  • I guess you don't study filipino martial arts. To kill one must close. To prolong one will run.

  • Works both ways, to get killed one must be close too.

  • they are drills to condition reflex, speed and autonomic muscle response. they are not "fighting techniques". they help the body-mind respond and react in a real chaotic situation. nothing more, nothing less. Of course they wouldnt fight like that. do your research an study before you post and bash.

  • true. you should never get this close to a knife. especially when ur unarmed but but if the knife holder gets this close to you? what about when you are forced to deal with an armed person in this range?

if running from a knife attack is so easy people would never get stabbed.

  • How else, would you fight in this range? This change in dynamics is changing, the attackers line of attack. Seldom, do you see anything close to this type of movement in flow. Yeah, I agree never get, this close with a knife, but with these skill at least your arteries are not expose.

  • @kevjo66 if experience is similar the knife person always wins. You'd be surprised, though, if you spar with a teacher who's way more advanced than you, say with a sharpie or a dulled knife, they get it away from you quicker than shit and it's all over your veins and tendons. If you keep playing with them you can start to get the hang of it in twenty minutes and start to get a few cuts in before they get you, but on the street you wouldn't have that privilege.

  • Nice Vid! there is a sayoc martial arts school in the philippines?

  • i've just bought the dvd coz this trailer is awesome....i wonder if they sellin the transition 2 dvd

  • Nice movements, but isn't it a bit suicidal to let an attacker with a knive get so close? Would they play that with sharp blades, and somebody they don't know?

  • this is cool

  • Hey that dood looks familiar? Do you teach class at Tulane?
