  • incredible touch! Shawn was born with a guitar. God has wrought at this time!

  • Hearing Shawn Lane tap, is the same sound when SL goes mental ^^

  • fuk mee

  • wow great video quality on this one.....

  • AAWWEESSOOMMEE!!

  • @guitartttimman

paul gilbert and countless others beg to differ. as paul said, shawn has "blazing amazing phrasing." guthrie govan also said that shawn lane's phrasing and shredding is very tasteful. lets see you do better halcomb. good luck with that.

  • @guitartttimman I disagree 100%

  • Very similar to Alan Holdsworth.

  • SERIOUSLY I'VE SEEN ALL KIND OF GUITARIST IN MY LIFE SOME AWESOME ONES BUT NO ONE LEFT ME WITH MY MOUTH WIDE OPEN LIKE SHAWN LANE SERIOUSLY VERY AWESOME GUY

  • WHO?! are the 3 morons who voted this down?!

  • Whats funny is his normal playing sounds about the same as the tapping! what a Beast on the guitar

  • shawn had some awsome side-burns back then. got to love the guy. :p

  • This is very Holdsworthy and I like that. Shawn even looks a little bit like Holdsworth in this video!

  • @atomicV1sion

Sounds nothing like Holdsworth at ALL!

  • @widepass I think it does.

  • @widepass

It definately does. This isn't bad. This is good. i wish Shawn did more stuff like this.

  • @ExtremeBogom

It's very good but it does not sound like Holdsworth!

  • @ExtremeBogom

It sounds like he had been listening to a lot of Holdsworth at this time!

Still doesn't "SOUND like him" that is a BIG difference imho!

  • @widepass

Well, I didn't mean Shawn sounds like Holdsworth (as-in a copy) or anything. Shawn is totally unique.

Infact he sounds nothing like Holdsworth most of the time.

Just yeah, this video reminds me of Holdsworth, in a good way.

My favorite Lane video is the Sneaky Pete's video. It's just perfect, literally.

It's a shame these two giants never played together because that would have been incredible.

  • @ExtremeBogom lane and holdsworth did play together once, I think it was at namm, ask willjay to be sure though.

  • @ChiZ712

Yeah Namm 95. I'm pretty sure they only met, and didn't actually play together.

    Going by what willjay said...

  • @atomicV1sion

    Yes he does your right!

Y'know, this is one of my favorite clips of Shawn because he's playing more jazzy/fusion style.

Later on in the 90's he ended up using more bebop stylings. I wish he would have done more improv, more free jazz. Like Holdsworth yes.

  • He does tapping...then he does legato...It makes little difference. He's that good :P

  • Does anybody know what kind of guitar that is? It's awsome.

  • Never seen him tap before.

  • Shawn... sickest runs ever!!!

  • You've got to love his face at around 1:01. He probably thinking,

"This is weird, I should totally come with a way to play everything, no matter how immpossibly wide, with one hand." (flashfoward 5 years)

  • watching shawn lane videos are better than watching porn i guess.

  • @emmanuelrodulfo less messy anyway

  • @emmanuelrodulfo

Watching Shawn play piano or guitar IS porn!!!

His fingers GANG BANG his instuments!!!

  • @emmanuelrodulfo i got an idea.. why don't u watch porn and play shawn lane in the background?

  • its unfair that a guy like this was virtually unheard of. RIP shawn. one of the greatest ever!

  • The amazing thing is hes so good his tapping sounds as fast as his normal left hand playing.

  • awsome video thanks for uploading

  • You can't develop speed like this. lane said it himself, he's always been like this, he just cleaned up his playing. You have to be born with speed like this.

  • @Kingding6

no, that's very untrue. you can develop speed that's a fact. i get faster and faster every month or so. i will probably never be as fast as shawn though. i will DEFINITELY never be as technically talented.

  • @GoodMetalFTW well of course you can develop incredible speed through hours of practice. Thing is Shawn didn't practice very much. He said himself he was born with a freakish nervous system. I still believe he was the most naturally talented guitarist ever.

  • @Kingding6

actually, im quite similar, i hardly ever practice. i practice 30 minutes a day at the most and sometimes i skip days. i find that if practice real hard my skills actually decrease for some odd reason. im the type of person that advances very quickly and learns something new every time i pick the guitar. im nowhere near as naturally talented as shawn of course, but i don't really need to practice that much to get good.

  • @GoodMetalFTW different strokes fer different folks i spose

  • i can do this in my sleep...because in my sleep im dreaming that i can do this xD R.I.P. shawn lane.

  • IMHO, there is only three or four interesting bits between 0.12 and 0.50 - the rest is a display of his flawless and insane technique.

I'm glad that he became less technically oriented when he got older, because this is leave me quite cold.

  • That is the most flawless and fastest alternate picking I've heard in a long time.

  • all i have to say is hell yeh :D

  • It appears he didn't tap because he saw his point getting across the same way without tapping...

  • Good lord... how old was he? Any ideas?

  • @Steve128967

I think he is 23 years old in this video.

  • Trolling in a 3rd person again tim.

Tim Halcomb sucks, and the reason you dont like Jazz/fusion is you can't touch it with your horrible timing and you know it.Why dont you go tell people how great you are on a Vai,EVH video.Lane is so far beyond you commenting on any of his vids you should be friggin shot.Go work on your Kansas cover because it was about the worst ever and what you should stick to.You are such a cun..t its not even funny.

  • @petiethepitt SHAWNS the MAN!!! And It's funny how tim just

started making crap comments on our featured videos.

    Coincidence... No!

    TROLL YES!!!

  • @DrJackKavorkian You are stupid as dick.

  • @BatteryHat and fuck dr. kavorkian

  • hwe didn´t need tapping....

  • I think i just creamed my pants...

  • Best guitarrists of all time:

    1ºShawn Lane

    2ºBuckethead

    3ºPaul Gilbert

  • lollololol Buckethead is nothing special

No one is really 'the best' *except for Shawn Lane, but if you're going to create a numerical list, Guthrie Govan, Paul Gilbert, and Hendrix (for sheer innovation) need to be considered, among dozens of others who all leave a guy with a bucket of chicken on his head.

  • @wotjesus No offense but are you kidding me?

Buckethead is indeed better than Govan, and only a little more technical than Gilbert.

  • None taken man, but just check out Wonderful Slippery Thing by Govan. And even if Buckethead is faster or more accurate than either Guthrie or Paul Gilbert, I would say they're both more creative than him, or at least know more.

  • @wotjesus making creative songs is something that Buckethead is an expert at,Siege Engine,Padmasana,Soothsayer,Baptism of Solitude,Nottingham Lace and many more, are examples of his amazing solo work.

  • No, I know, those songs are all great. I just think Guthrie's work is even MORE great. When I heard a bunch of those songs (Siege Engine, Soothsayer, Padmasana), I was really wowed by his expertise, and even by -yes- how cool and clever a lot of parts were. But the first Govan song I heard (Waves), absolutely blew my mind. The only person I'd heard prior to Guthrie to have such an outside sound and really use abstract scales and wider intervals was Shawn Lane.

  • @wotjesus So that's a question of opinion,I think Buckethead's solo work is better.

  • @halo Fair enough. I'd like to thank you for being one of the few people on youtube who know to argue like a normal human, and though I'll stick to my opinions, I'd also like to thank you for giving me incentive to look through some Buckethead- haven't reaallly listening to his solo stuff in ages.

  • hehe, well I need to listen to Guthrie's stuff too,I have just listened to only 2 or 3 songs...

  • @wotjesus buckethead wrote over 1500 songs . he is pure creative. I dont say that numbers are all . No other guitarist exept can stick me so much to his music like buckethead. Shawn is 2 on my list

  • @wotjesus buckethead is less creative ?? thats a joke ! most creative songs that i heard in my life : mustang , datura ,aquabot xD and many many more , all come from bucket :P

  • buckethead uses lots of effects, but his playing is very repetitive. I can easily break down 20 licks that he plays all the time.

He's not anywhere near as creative musically as shawn lane...just looking at the single powers of ten album you can see how creative he was -- then his work with jonas hellborg was one of a kind...

  • Shawn Lane just had a natural gift for music it seems to me, just born to do that O.o

  • @BrianGuitarShred

buckethead is repetitive with his guitar solos, but nothing else. shawn lane and buckethead are equally creative, but buckethead has made A LOT of albums. despite all this i still prefer shawn lane over buckethead. he is just smoother to me, and is the only one who can shred like that while still being melodic. btw you should check out buckethead's new album shadows between the sky, it's beautiful. R.I.P. shawn lane, and long live BH.

  • @lordhalo1605 Guthrie Govan would steal 3rd place because he can imitates all the great player's styles perfectly! Search guthrie govan mimics the great on youtube you'll see!

  • Hahaha Nils3OWN I see you actually are 15. Good guess. Your featured video has 1 and a half stars, Oh dear.

  • Shawn appeared to be plugged into a JCM 800 1x12 combo. Can anyone confirm?

  • gee whiz

    what hands he had

    RIP Shawn Lane

  • Thank you for giving me strength shwan ... I love you.. Tommy

  • He's incredible... isn't he my brother?!

  • Lane,Holdsworth,Gambale,Henderson,Johnson......,the list is longer ,all different players, there is no best or worse, all supreme musicians, that respect each other very much,so,who are we to criticise them, like some do here.Wish i had a fraction of their skills!

  • I dont think he realy needed to tap that, I've seen him do some rediculously wide stretches

  • Wiljay has a video... Shawn Lane with the Willys, end of Purple Haze circa 1987... and in it he plays that part of Eruption that everyone taps out, but Shawn USES ONE HAND!!!

  • Soo cool... great post;)

I agree with Roadwarrior and Buckethead and...

  • The Greatest Guitarist of all time as a boy.

  • @Nils3OWN Obviously you're the dumb fuck for putting such a stupid immature comment. Van Halen isn't better than Shawn Lane. And because someone is famous doesn't make them better. Listen to Shawn Lane's music, He was technically the fastest but most importantly completely tasteful. He had incredibly musical songs and melodies. I love Van Halen too, what are you 15?

  • @RoadWarrior2006

hey i'm 15 that was rude (: just kidding that guy is an idiot don't reply to him he will not understand it anyway..

  • @RoadWarrior2006 AMEN!

  • @RoadWarrior2006

not just as a boy, i think he is the greatest EVER!!! still there are other great guitarists too like allan holdsworth, rusty cooley, and buckethead so it's pretty hard to choose.

  • @RoadWarrior2006 AGREED!

  • @RoadWarrior2006

Say what? He played like a man his entire life, better than any man...

  • I dont think the big deal is tapping in this video - it was just named that because he did a litlle of that in this.... I think the big deal is the legato/picking shredding were he kics ass in the first minute or so.... hs playing helped me to face an impossible situation... I love him

  • much better clean sound with tapping that "flamenco" tecknique...

  • shit i might as well sell my guitar on ebay he was truly one in a million he could play well in every aspect of the guitar

  • you mean one in 6.5 billion?

  • the opening phrase is just amazing and the little bit at 1:21 - 1:25 ... doesnt get much better than that.

  • try puttin a guitar neck and put it straight in YOUR CANDY ASS ! to k ill your boredom ! WOOT !!

  • boring? . . . so basically his playing went right over your head. Idiots . . .

  • So he was a master of tapping as well..

  • Shawn was the GOAT.

  • what kind of guitar is that? I knew at one time but forgot

  • Roland GR-303, my friend used to own it before he gave it Shawn

  • thanks !!!

  • fuckin godly

  • shawn was left handed but played right handed...

  • is that so

  • he must have been feeling lazy because he could easily have done that stretch.

  • yeah thats easy ground for him. he has stubby fingers for a guitarist but they can move faster than buckethead's spider hands

  • Go to the 1:00 minute mark. That's tapping, but Shaw normally doesn't do it.

  • @EduardoLirani It's quite shocking to see!

Also funny how he never uses tapping but when he does it's the best... God damn.

  • @thunderstick1968 that is taping you dumb ass??

  • @thunderstick1968

First of all, why did you say "first of all" if you only had one point to make in the first place.

Second of all your an idiot.

  • I love that little tonality at 0:56 to 0:59.

  • It's not just the speed that's mindblowing, but the fact that he can do it so accurate and cleanly. And he's doing it all seemingly effortlessly.

  • Shawn lane plays so fucking fast that he doesn't need to tap to match such a speed.

  • Shawn Lane had two guitar speeds. The speed of light and the much, much slower speed of sound..

  • lol...great line...and so true.

  • I've never seen Genius like this. Shawn Lane was simply the best. Peace n Love

  • wow shawn is the best ,check here's a young guitarist warming up another unique upcoming guitar player

    all the best

  • Is there some kind of a contest going on here? All I read is this is better than that, ever since when music became a competition sport? C'mon people, enjoy the music and let your heart rejoyce!

  • Couldn't have said it better myself.

  • No contest, just communication via embryo musicians.

Youtube has more positives than negatives, but the primary negative being it enables imbeciles to interact with people who understand the content.

Just ignore them, because in a real-life situation people would not give them the time of day if they started arguing about "the best".

  • one of the greatest comments i've ever read... thank you xD

  • the part from :22 - :27 helped motivate me to help a person very close to me recover successfully from what was initially a very severe brain injury

  • paul gilbert shawn lane and buckethead all have a good knowledge of music theory and they all are amazing guitarists.

  • When lane uses the min6 (g) here, its actually right because he plays it over an emin7 chord, not an e7 chord. If the fourth chord was a dominant then proffesorgreibowitz would be right, but its not so hes wrong.

  • there's always some new and refreshing in everything I hear from this guy... why do they have to leave us so early =(

  • Young God. He was the best there ever has been.

  • I think he was just tapping to mix it up, not to like go the extra mile and make up something nobody could ever play for a million years. I would go as far to say that he was getting ready to play it without tapping and was just curious and thought what the hell I'll tap the notes this time. Obviously, although this is fine you can tell he doesn't spend much time tapping.

  • Shawn was awesome.

  • You obviously haven't listened to his music enough.

  • enough said,or has no idea what he is seeing or hearing.

  • Shut the hell up. Shawn can play any lick around twice as fast as Yngwie Malmsteen or the so called guitar master, while PICKING every note. No pull offs or hammer ons. He has tons of soul. Have you listened to the song called Esperanto? Well you should, then you'll understand why Shawn is one of the best guitarists/musicians in the world.

  • Well i guess Gilbert has no idea what he's talking about when he says shawn is the most terrifying guitarist ever, and as he put it (his amazing blazing phrazing, wich is the edge Lane has over most shredders, like Malmsteen and M.A.B.,Vai had one word to describe Shawn,(wow)when Steve would normaly say amzing,or,Incredible,no soul,or no ear,im leaning towards the later,I think ya need to hear more of his music before commenting like that because its simply not the case.

  • phrasing sorry

  • a song called "death theme" by shawn should be on the scroll bar to your right. i suggest clicking it, listening to it, and then blowing your brains out.

  • Shawn is the man, this is a style of Jazz that I can definately listen to. Even though he is playing very fast and shredding, it still sounds very mellow.

  • How can someone play like that, that's what I wanna know. I've been playing all my life, and I sound like shit.

  • yeah me too .... This dude got lucky and was given a whole lotta 'music genes'. Since I found out about Shawn I've been looking hard and I can't find ANYONE that plays as fast and as clean, .... and there are a lot of REALLY amazing guitar players on the planet.

  • look up vinnie moore

  • WTF dude shawn lane didn't teach buckethead wtf??!??!!? paul gilbert and some other guy did where do u hear this shit from....

  • actually if im not mistaken the two have had music theory discussions and Lane talked to him about some diatonic and non diatonic stuff

you know modal and then some theory on Counter Point and revers Polarity

alot of people think Bucket just plays strange music and is a great guitarist but its deeper then that if you understand theory(not saying you have to understand theory to enjoy music)

seriously i feel like only Bucket and Guthrie Govan are capable of getting close to what did

  • Buckethead worshiped Shawn Lane most of his techniques along with Paul Gilbert come from Shawn Lane, for instance that 8 finger tapping buckethead does was an idea he got from Lane's Tri-tone fascination CD and demo tapes, and Paul's odd groupings of notes such as 6s and pentatonic stuff all are influence by Lane, and any guitarist that has ever heard Lane knows what good phrasing sounds like. you obviously don't know much about music or Buckethead.

  • i can guarentee Buckethead did not play better than shawn lane live, even he would admit to that.

  • yea buckethead is awesomeee...but he would admit that shawn lane is better

  • I agree. I don't think there is anyone who would claim to be technically more proficient than Shawn. He's not my favorite guitarist at all, but he's clearly more skilled in the execution of different notes at insane speeds than anyone I prefer to listen to over him.

  • I would agree with that...

  • there is no way buckethead could play any of shawns stuff. U obviously know fuck all.

  • Not to be insulting but he does look like meatloaf there. Incredible talent though

  • what a killer guitar he is. CTROCK THE HIP HOP ROCK GUITAR ARTIST

  • shut up everybody, playing fast is beautiful too, it's sounds very "out" but he is a jazzman, it's normal...faggets

  • How old is he here?

  • i love the blues(the good one) and i love shredding (the good one) because i love electric guitar in general, something that catches my ear, something new, that reach my soul, you can do it bending just one note or tapping 22 per second, but it must have that something from the player that express his soul, not sounding as a machine but with art and musicality

too bad most shredders sound like machines they lack feeling (they should play the blues from time to time) shawn was fast but good musician.

  • endrizo i agree completely... just becuz its slow doesnt mean it has feeling, just because its fast doesn't mean it has feeling... i hate people that think when it's fast it doesn't have feeling, you just have to use speed correctly

  • did i miss something? tapping?

  • i like yngwie better too ! shawn lane is a kick ass guitar player !

  • It takes an idiot to know an idiot...right!!!SHAWN is more talented than you and your whole family! You could'nt lift his jock, so take your worthless opinion and go far away greiboshitz!!!

  • Nice man!

  • If you actually have an understanding of music (which most of you don't) you'll easily hear the pure minor scale with the minor 6th (bad choice in this song) starting around :14. He should have used the major 6th instead (ie, key=Bm would be, B C# D E F# G# A B NOT G but G#). One note can make a huge difference.

  • Lol, the fact that you called Aeolian the "pure minor scale" shows how little you understand about music theory. Yes, he does play outside notes, it's from his jazz influences (i.e. Holdsworth), and playing notes like these are not uncommon in a blues situation.

Just because you don't like it doesn't make it wrong.

  • amart7: just because you like asserting doesn't mean you're correct. :) Bottom line: A G note over this progression is musically inferior to the G# (ie, the JAZZIER note to use is the G#). Go buy a Mel Bay guitar book and come back when you have something of substance to say.

  • Dude, a book cannot tell you what is musically inferior. That is for the ear to judge. Sorry.

It's too bad you aren't able to understand the "substance" to my words.

  • Well, The Aeolian mode is the natural minor scale.

  • aeolian scale and "a" minor scale -from a to a - is definetely the same thing.

Experts discuss other kind of items not this basic stuff.

  • seems like you're the one in need of theory lessons, Aeolian IS the pure minor/natural minor scale(mode).source:Harmony I-Barry Nettles.

    enjoy your lesson!

  • BigTurder, you know nothing. I was playing long before you were born.

  • professorgreiboShitsOnHimself, it seems that you're the one that needs lessons in language.its a shame that you're that much older than myself and still need 'em.my last message was in agreement with your calling the aeolian the pure minor.the message was meant for 'amart' not you.get it?and i find it surprising that after playing for more than 21 years you still have to come to youtube of all places to show off your theory ( and in the process look like idiot for not comprehending grammar)!!

  • professorgreibowitz just stfu. Why do u always bitch about the littlest things on every Shawn video. What did he do to you anyways? and who cares its one note in one of thousands of his jams. Whats the point of music if can just predict every note he will or shoulve played? that takes all the fun out of it.

  • go listen to Temporal Analogues of Paradise for slow playing then.

  • professorgreibowitz

lol ur such a jackass...this is youtube, when are you gonna realize NOONE in the world cares about your critique...we looked up his videos because we like his music, but why did you look up his videos? to make snotty little critiques to boost ur own self esteem. u have such an argumentative attitude, you must not have many friends...you might not realize it but you have a very snotty and condescending attitude buddy.work on it.

  • those aren't wrong notes. they're in there on purpose, thats why its fusion. its a mix of different styles and scales and stuff put into one song. so it sounds different. but they aren't wrong notes. and every slow song i've seen him play is beautifully played. and he doesn't struggle with it.

  • Hes saying fundamentally they are wrong

If you are phrasing whatever osunds good to you is a right note, not what other people think.

He was not being an ass just statinga ture point

  • He's not struggling with slow solo's at all! "Death Theme" (morricone) and "Epilogue for Lisa" ar simply brilliant songs! I do agree with you on his fast playing - I can't get into it. It's too "outside" and indeed, too fast for me to follow. BUt still, his ballads are outstanding!

  • No nothing from this mana was accidental, he plays a lot of jazzy scales, and "outside" notes in all his songs..check other videos with him :)

  • made a mistake..i wanted to say nothing from this man
