Years ago, There was an exhibition of Bouguereau's paintings in San Francisco. You can read about this great artist and look at all these wonderful pictures of his work but, seeing them up close is a treat that few people will experience. What a wonderful artist . What great skill. You just had to be there to appreciate the mans skill. Incidentally, his wife and formerstudent was also a magnificent painter.
I think the subject matter- cherubs and so many peasant girls- puts many off, or he's seen as either too sentimental or irrelevant today. Of course he should get more respect for his magnificent technique, the exceptional light and there have been few greater portrait painters. My own favourite is of Gabrielle Cot at 6:38, but i also approve of romanies being given dignity, e.g 3:22. And to think so many critics who ignore him are interested in Tracey Emin!
Well, i hadn't realised you also did the Pissarro video. This is another excellent presentation anyway. I prefer this type to the ones on youtube that zoom in and out without letting you see the whole picture properly. There's also surprising variety with the facial expressions here- each is still very much an individual even though many look similar. And what incredible rapturous expressions in the Psyche painting, 2:07; it's almost miraculous.
One of my all time favorites as well John, thanks for sharing. I've never seen the piece at :28. Wow! I think many females favor this artist due to his angelic touches. and wow, didn't know about his "comeback", comeback for sure I'll say. :) It just amazes me though why it takes a person to die to become so famous in the Arts.
Bouguereau was extremely successful in his lifetime; it was only toward the end of his life and after his death that the modernists tried to expunge his name from the record. Beautiful video, by the way.
Yes, I agree that he was quite successful, but the big (and I mean BIG) bucks that his paintings currently command would have been nice for him had the prices occurred back when he could enjoy them.
Once upon a time, Bouguereau created the best paintings in the world. The end.

Yes, Bouguereau is fun. If you enjoy him, you might want to check the Bouguereau spoofs, also fun.

love the peasants paintings, but despise the angel ones.
One of my favorite palettes as well & top technique.

What, no angels? Hmmm, I like the peasants, too.

Yes, bless his heart. He worked so hard. One wishes he had managed to enjoy some of the big bucks.
