The score provides a melancholy ambience underlying the fact that the movie meant the end of an era for James Bond and Roger Moore - arguably the most dedicated and genuinely enthisiastic incumbent of the 007 role.
Growing up as a child, we lived in a block of flats opposite a drive-inn and I'd hear this music every nite playing in the movie - love it. Movie was also one of the better Bond movies - dont like Craig or Pierce but Sean Connery was the best. roger was a bit of a whimp but anyway Octopussy was also brilliant - that scene in India being chased in a tuk tuk was the fuinniest
sometimes I think that the only reason why bond fans like me give this film any respect (cuz it's pretty bad) is because we can watch it simply for the music. I argue that AVTAK has the best score of any other bond film. You can enjoy it just for the music.
what you have said about the music is so true. however i love bond becuase the films a great. the recent films are awful - golden eye was the best most recent one. craig is awful no witty remarks or anything and no gadgets!
There's a particular scene in the film where Bond is climbing down the fire truck ladder and a variation of this tune comes on; it's stayed with me for years.
@davecom3 & @modelearth - search for "James Bond: Back In Action Vol. 2", it's available as a re-recording, called "Fanfare", part of track 11 (A View to a Kill-Suite: Wine With Stacey/Fanfare/Snow Job) :)
Thanks Mortzau, I actually found it by accident on itunes by typing in wine with stacey. The track has wine with stacey/fanfare/snow job on it. Fanfare is as good as I remember it!
I'm surprised nobody has mentioned that this is the same as "A View to A Kill" - the Duran Duran song - same chords, same melody. I read that the band came up with the chords and melody and John Barry helped to structure it so I guess this should probably be credited to them.
I had read a comment of a women on a online store that bought the cd. She said she used this song for her mothers funeral. I think the song is very suitable for such occasions.
i meant oboe. that IS an oboe, right? or is it an english horn? it's not a flute, although the beginning melody is a french horn. what is the main solo? oboe? someone tell me please.
I bought the soundtrack album to this film the day before I went on holiday to Argeles sur mer in south west France. It always reminds me of a very special French girl I met there, who I miss terribly!
thank you for posting this...2o years ago i bought duran duran single view to a kill and on the b side was this piece of music......always relaxed me and made me sleep better thx.
There are no words, they simply do not exist, to describe the feelings that are expressed through this beautiful melody.

I really love Duran Duran's song but this was an awesome version! The strings in the background make a perfect arrangement and support the flute!

Roger Moore is the most authentic 007. Dangerous, witty, and charming.

My favorite part of any Bond film is when they slow the main theme when played during the movie.

one of the best pieces of music in a bond film, too bad it had to be in one of the worse films of the series.

It's a flute, possibly an alto flute (a larger flute, lower in pitch and deeper in tone than the regular C flute), but definitely not an oboe.
