He played Idi Amin better than Amin could play himself. Also he worked really hard to develop himself in the role. It is probably one of my favourite pieces of acting of all time as Forest showed that all us humble men have monsterous sides within us, whilst those we percieve as monsters, such as Amin, are really just as human as you or me.

no disrespect to Mr. Whitaker, who put forward a wonderful performance, but this Academy Award should have been given to Ryan Gosling. If you have not yet seen 'Half Nelson', please do. Immediately. Gosling is a genius in this film. I watched it by chance the other day, and ended up re-watching it four times over the next few days just so I could again appreciate his remarkable prowess as an actor. Cheers.

Peter O'Toole probably has some of the greatest misfortune in his Oscar nominations -- it seems as though somebody else was just a little bit better when he got nominated (Gregory Peck, Robert De Niro, Ben Kingsley, Forrest Whitaker). The exception was possibly 1968, when he should have won for "Lion in Winter."
