I went to a concert during 1983 Japan tour, it seems like yesterday. Thank you so much for posting. Vienna Boys choir has been part of my life since I was a little girl!
I have listened to this video many times. The alto and treble solos are beautiful and their smiles at the end are special. Thank you for this posting.
It's such a treat to have more samples of this choir. Rene not only has a wonderful voice, but I can imagine all the hard work that went to being able to use it so well.
The alto solo is very sweet. I can almost hear the cow-bells in it, as the cows come down from pasture in the Alps!
What wonderful music is that? As lyricism! Sublime! The voice of this boy is quite different from the voices of the other boys and it is very beautiful. It is the first time that I hear this music and I am really delighted!Thank you kawaiimiffy, you provide for the happiness of seeing something so wonderful, this presentation complete. Thank you.
I agree with you matthewgriffith. The Vienna Boys is always wonderful, but it seems well above average. It is really impressive to see them and listen to them.
I third that. He was really good as Mitzi's father (Herr Kipfel) in "G'schichten aus alt Wien." The Austrian folk song he's soloing in is a lovely one, "Pfiat Gott, liabe Alm."
Austria is such a beautiful country , no wander they make such beautiful music to go with it

Yes, it's a lovely song. I'm getting to really like these old Austrian Volkslieder. Thanks for giving the title; I managed to find the words for it:
Pfiat Gott, liabe Alm!
1. Pfiat Gott, liabe Alm, pfiat Gott tausendmal!
Da Summa is uma, muaß wiedar ins Tal.
2. Is da Winta vorbei und du wiedar grean,
da will i mit Freidn za dir aufageahn.
3. Daweil pfiat di Gott, und leg di zar Ruah,
bald döckt di dar Herrgott blüahweiß und warm zua.
Think I'll learn it for myself!

Thanks matthewgriffith for the lyrics. When I get around to it I'll try to translate them for myself, though my German is not great.

Here's a translation, musikview.
God bless, dear pasture,
God bless a thousand times over,
summer is gone,
I must return to the valley.
When winter is past
and you are green again
up to you.

Well, not a very complete translation, I'm afraid - but it gives some idea. I think they've missed out the last verse.

No problem, it's enough for me. Thanks so much matthewgriffith and all the best to you.

It'll be a good song to sing when you bring your cows down from pasture!
What lovely words. Who bothers thanking God for things nowadays?

It's so nice to hear committed and beautiful singing, unfortunately only available from the past. Does anyone recognize the conductor?
maestrovoci 3 years ago
The conductor is Josef Doeller. I got to meet him and some of the kids just after their concert in 1982 at Carnegie Hall.

Nice to have an alto solo every now and then! Rich and mellifluous!

I agree with you (having been an alto myself). This soloist is excellent. But then this choir is wonderful altogether!
