Brad is not only an excellent country music singer, artist, he is also an amazing guitar player. His name should always be included when great guitarists are mentioned.
dwcounts82: Honestly, I would love to hear Paisley do an SRV cover, but I still don't think Paisley's voice fits in with blues as well as it fits in with country (for country-blues it'd work though). Of course, Paisley's playing can easily take the form of ANY genre--country, blues, rock, jazz and just about any of those four genres' sub genres!
@dwcounts82 Oh yeah! I know Brad and Eric Johnson have become friends. Occasionally Eric throws out some SRV. I'd love to see both of them together on stage! My wife just saw Chris Layton playing @ the Saxon Pub in Austin last night w/ a whole list of notables that just "showed up".
Slash was an amazing guitarist at age 21 and has later been a bit 'lazy' of expanding repertoire (but who would after received rock-god status that early?). Brads breakthrough came a bit later (age 29).
I'll get flamed for saying it, but Brad was probably just as good as Slash or better at age 21 - he was just relatively unknown at the time. To this day, he's only really regarded as a Guitar-God among his fans. It's because he's a country musician that a lot of other guitarists (Rock/Metal fans) refuse to acknowledge he's any good.
When you make the cover of Guitar Player magazine - which caters to the true guitarist/musician and not the flavor-of-the-month-in-Rock club......You've pretty much got the respect of your peers. (Dec 2007)
Then add Country player of the year (2008) in Readers' Choice @ Guitar Player.....not much else to do.
joelostrom86: I have to agree with what you said about Paisley probably being just as good as Slash or better and, honestly, I'd certainly put some money on it and bet that Paisley was already better because, even though Slash is good, he's certainly not great (no offense to him--he's just made out to be much better than he is). Anyway, it is a shame that a lot of non-country guitarists don't acknowledge Paisley's excellent guitar work...thanks for Guitar Player Magazine who has though!
The way I see it is that there are guys all over who are great at rock and blues and have figured out how to play all the covers, but seriously those guys can't pull off these kinda licks plus throw in all the steel pedal licks brad, brent mason, albert lee, forrest lee jr and tons of others. For guitar the country players got IT!!!! We play teles, a stick with a cutting board
hereicome11: You know, you are 100% right about what you said about Paisley, Mason, Lee and Forrest Lee! However, there is one guitarist you forgot to mention--Danny Gatton. Paisley is kind of like a more modern version of Gatton, but still very original.
Also, you might want to check out metal guitarist John 5...he looks like a freak, but he can play a number of genres including country!
"Let the Good Times Roll" was written by "Lovin'" Sam Theard in 1946 and first recorded by Louis Jordan that same year. BB King first recorded his cover of the song in 1976 and 32 years later he and Brad Paisley recorded their version.
So if anyone ripped it off it would have been Stevie Ray Vaughan when he wrote "Pride and Joy".
Okay. I guess I should have done a little research beforehand. I considered looking it up first, but I did it on a whim and assumed I was right. Thus, my comment was the result of my laziness and short-sightedness. Sorry about that.
No, don't worry about it. You were right. That's the difference. You took the time to actually look it up before commenting. I should have done that. Oh well, a simple mistake. Thanks for being civil about the whole thing though.
Spider123Man: I definitely do hear an SRV influence in Brad Paisley's playing on "Let the Good Times Roll." I do love the studio version that Paisley recorded with B.B. King for PLAY. In fact, I'd love to see them perform it together live, instead of Paisley performing a solo version.
I've been listening to Play nonstop since the forth. This is one of my favorites on there, the other close seconds are Kentucky Jelly and the Steve Wariner duet
Oh yeah. It's nice to see him stretching out some. If you go to his live shows you will hear a lot of that, but the general public doesn't really realize how great he is!
BluesmanCV: I must agree with you when you say, "The general public doesn't really realize how great he is!"
I mean, not many guitarists--especially modern guitarists--can play country, surf rock, bluegrass, blues, rock and jazz the way that Brad Paisley can! With country guitarists, Brad Paisley is definitely well-known but, with rock guitarists, he seems to be underrated!
Also, I'd take Paisley over Slash any day, yet so many people make a huge deal about Slash!
I don't get that either. Versatility is not overrated! It's hard to come by and takes YEARS of mastering the instrument. All Slash does is writes pretty run of the mill parts that he plays and wears a goofy hat! lol. But on a serious note, Brad Paisley will go down as one of the best
BluesmanCV: I sure hope Paisley will, one day, get more respect by guitarists that don't play country--mainly the rock guitarists that hate country simply because it's country.
And I must agree that Slash does wear a goofy hat...actually, Tom Keifer--of Cinderella--may have been wearing a top hat like that before Slash was well-known...I'm not sure on that one though.
I can't get enough of Paisley's guitar work and I'm glad that, in December 2007, Guitar Player Magazine actually did a...
"All Slash does is writes pretty run of the mill parts that he plays and wears a goofy hat!"
obviously you haven't listened to alot of slash. check out the differences between slash's snakepit, gnr, and velvet revolver. oh and the hats always better than buckethead haha i do agree that brad is vastly underrated and good as well but its hard to compare the two
But he isnt really a band guitarist, I mean he can't just blend in with the drums and bass. He's always out doing solos, which doesnt always make a guitarist good.
If you wanna do solo after solo go out on your own like Beck or Clapton.
ummmm sorry but i sing"pride and joy" when i hear this song....it's normal no?

I just saw this on Dancing With the Stars on TV, and I couldn't help but notice that it sounds like a rip off of Pride and Joy.
Not dissing Brad Paisley or anything, he's a great artist and musician, but the two songs just seem too similar to me.
