  • Can't believe I didn't have this in my favs.

    Such a great album.

    Thanks 'johnisallin.'

    Thanks Pete and Ronnie.

And,, thanks Gabriele. Surely youcan relate to some of the lyrics more deeply given your home town, and country.

    Peace.

    Rock

  • Such a great track !!

  • yeah its a real treasure i found it at a garage sale about 13 years ago. i couldn't believe what i had. it was still in the wrapper.

  • The greatest non-Beatles song in the history of mankind

  • @dhloup1 no just the greatest

  • I had This Album...Yeah Pressed Plastic ! lol

  • Rough mix beat all "Who" albums.

  • This might be my favorite LP with Pete Townshend on it. And that is saying a lot!

  • is there anyway to get this song? I can't find this on iTunes. I would really like to have it.

  • Pete Townshend's (then) father-in-law, Ted Astley, wrote, arranged and conducted all the string parts. Pete's brother-in-law, Jon Astley, has been the one who has overseen the re-mixing/re-issuing of all the Who's catalog (and has done a horrible job of it, IMO).

  • @bgumbel71 Edwin Astley also wrote the theme to - brace yourself - "Danger Man." Same man. No relation to Rick Astley (in case THAT question comes up!).

  • The Violin sound is AWESOME!!

  • Pete is the greatest!! I wonder how he got his music writing talent.

  • wow never caught this one in 77' too cool! Thanks!!!

  • Gershwin's got nothing on Pete. Awesome!

  • Ah Pete, Ronnie. We'll never see your like again. There are no more rock stars as heroes. It's all gone to shit.

  • Another '77 Rough Mix special ... I have got to get another copy of this album ...

  • Kicked Floyds ass....

  • Ronnie Lane was an inspiration to many in the music world.

His collaboration with Pete at this time is truly magical.

The last album he recorded before his death was with Eric Clapton.

That album is called "See Me"

    Another gem.

Anything he did with his band Slim Chance fantastic!!!

Check out the DVD "The Passing Show"

    We miss you Ronnie.

  • a rich tapestry of a song...has always been one of my favorite LP..."My baby gives it away"... is another masterpiece on this LP

  • give me a heart to hang on to do you heathens not know ?

  • Howdy!Bubble&squid&BBQ from Alabama! Y'all come whenever!

  • A buddy of mine John McMullen turned me on to this cassette back in 1980 and man I were it out . Thanks Johny from Zorro !

  • This is an unknown masterpiece, in my book. The best thing Pete Townshend ever did. Who cares about The Who?

  • utterly superb

  • awesome album

  • has anyone got anything from Chineze Eyes?

i can no longer find the song where he sings "people, stop hurting people...people, stop hurting people" etc. ??

if so can you throw it up on the tube?

    would be appreciated.

  • @LarsYenin

Deep End Live has this song.

    Great concert

  • Just a superb example of gifted musicality, a truly under-rated aspect of P Townshend

  • The greatest non-Beatles song in history!!!

  • I just read, Eddy Vedder was inspired by this song when he wrote "the End" from Backspacer.

  • This is really a great album, yet so little people know about it. I got it on vinyl, but played it so much that the sound is almost gone!

  • Thanks Pete

  • At 5:09 I hear a distinct similarity to the guitar run in Who Are You. Only a couple seconds long. This ('76/'77) was probably written within a year or less of Who Are You('77/78)

  • You are right. It's the same riff. Pete has been known to use bits and pieces of different songs and piece them together. In other words, he steals from himself, lol. But he is the first to admit it.

There are many examples of this over the years. Check out the Who's Glow Girl. The ending of that song is the same as Tommy's Overture. Except this time... "It's a girl Mrs.Walker, it's a girl"

  • Wow, good ear. That's fantastic!

  • It is funny listening to this after several years and new musical perspective. I hear a lot of 1940's-1950's film soundtrack in the string section. I could also almost picture it being the score for some Sinatra Noir type film. Back when I used to listened to it, I thought of it as just a cool Pete tune. It makes you realize how "musical" Pete was. He really did love a lot of jazz "pre-rock" music.

  • I have always been unable to stop listening to this tune, as well as most of Pete's work. I just was wondering who actually wrote it. I would assume Pete.

  • Yeah Pete wrote it, but the strings were written by his father in law (at the time)John Astley. I read that somewhere ages ago. I am 90% sure it is accurate.

  • one of my faves, thought there was just a little bit of the genius in this song, I think it was a chap called Gilbert who did the orchestration, any muso's may notice a snippet of "the rite of spring" Stravinsky 4.53-5.00. or am i hearing things. Great song, great artist. I presume its Pete's song, i also love a heart to hang onto which i recon is probably Ronnie's.

  • i love pete ,but that whole thing with the pc...not trying to defame anyone or unlock the scorn of phyco fans, but it was something that knocked my who shaped specticals askew.

  • love hearing Pete on acoustic guitar!

  • One of The Great Albums, ever! Magical.

  • that breath, 4:59

    says it all

  • thanks for posting

    superb

  • Listen, do you want to know a secret ? This album is a true hidden gem !

  • Listen, what you said is a huge understatement! :) This album is, perhaps, the most under rated rock classic of all time. An utterly unbelievable collaberation between two guys who were polar opposites in the rock music community. I remember buying this after hearing "My Baby" on (the now defunct) KWST in L.A. After listening to the album I was mesmorized by how dull "My Baby" was compared to the rest of the cuts. If you do not yet own this gem, find it, download it, whatever..just get it!

  • Definitely a classic. Found it by accident trying to download some of Ronnie's early stuff. Listened to it just to see what it was like. After a couple of listens, couldn't get enough. Nice to see no-one insulting each other on this vid. You all suck! :)

  • gorgeous tune !!!

  • Not bad...Pete just has that voice that is crying meaning...don't you think?

  • Anyone notice the "Who Are You" bass riffs between 5:07 to 5:23?

  • I think that was Pete's accoustic guitar. It does sound like the "Who are You" riffs, though.

  • so much going on in this. you can just get lost in this song

  • this track is so interesting and biographical

  • That gasp!

  • altough the whole rough mix album is great this is what i think is the keypiece.

  • i LOVE it! Amazing!

  • A magnificent classic !

  • great tune !!Love it !!
