  • This is the type of song where there should be no dislike button located on the screen and the only three dislikes on this page coincidentally come from Karl, Kevin and Kathy-otherwise known as KKK.Long live the power of soul music!!

  • beautiful song... fantastic voice ..... turn up the volume

  • Not one of their more well known songs but one of their best. Thanks for putting this on.

  • I dedicate this song to all who have suffered due to the death of someone they truly loved. My Barbra Rose - we had only two years together in this life. You left this world at age forty-three. On this Valentine's Day 2012, you are still my Eternal Love -- My Forever Valentine. Barbra -- you and you alone possess the ONLY key to my heart-of-hearts. Each day, I pray and hope that Heaven will allow you to come back for me and take me back to Heaven with you. Barbra -I love you beyond Space/Time!

  • @mickeymousebiker1 .........What a nice post ! If there truly is a Heaven then I know you'll get this wish. God bless !

  • @coolsouthernrain75 God, or something we mortals call "God" does exist. So, if God exists, then, He (It?) must have a dwelling place. I STILL need My Barbra Rose in the here and the now -- not in the hereafter. I'm losing out down here. Hope is slipping away and I ain't a young dude anymore. Nuff said. Enjoy the music and forget the rest.

  • @mickeymousebiker1 .........Whatever you do don't give up. Barbara Rose wouldn't have wanted you to quit.

  • @coolsouthernrain75 Many thanks. Take care, man.

  • @mickeymousebiker1 - I am so sorry for your loss. I know exactly how you feel because I lost my high school sweetheart after finding each other again later in life. Some days I ask myself "what else is there without him?" Your post was such a beautiful expression of your love for your lady. I wish you peace and a prayer for God's blessings for your broken heart!

  • @sunnygirl3250 I guess some people are like short-term pieces of a puzzle (life). Remove those people from life and the rest of the puzzle is incomplete and without definite purpose. I guess that only The Almighty can fill in those missing places in our lives. I also think that He becomes "jealous" if we put others (or things) before Him. What was I to learn from losing the only gal I ever truly loved and wanted to marry? Many thanks for your sentiments and prayers. I need them.

  • Imagine, these guys formed this group in high and stayed together for 50 plus years!!!! They recorded beautiful hearfelt romantic music. Todays R&B music doesn't even come close!!

  • Damn, these guys could sing. Really sing. They reached down deep inside of you and made you feel the emotion. There will never be another like them.

  • There's no mistaking the classic sound of The Four Tops with the late great Levi Stubbs.

  • listen to 4tops all day everyday and i guess i missed this version, silly me because by far this is the best version i've ever heard and i really still like the other versions to. Long live 4tops

  • 4 Tops and Temptations......... Pure raw musical talent made when groups sang a song that had a beginning, middle and end with some fantastic orchestration.

  • Oh, my God, I was so in love with a neighbor friend of mine when this song came out. I use to sit in my room and play it over and over again. Flourine Jordan, I dedicate this song to you! • the background singing in this is tremendous

  • Not one of their biggest chart hits but one of their best songs....in fact one of the best pop/soul songs ever. So Damn good it will bring tears to your eyes.

  • i think this was on the flip side of "baby i need your lovin",whatever--i always really liked it because the lyrics seemed written with true inspiration comming from despair. absolute beautiful harmony and lyrics that cry out to be heard. wonderful piece. thanks for sharing.

  • Come on!! Is this not the most beautiful song ever? Ask the lonely? Only they know. What a song? When you lose your one and only, it can put you in a place where you can never recover. I know. I'm there right now. And this is my song!

  • One of my Four Tops favorites...growing up in Metro Detroit this Motown foursome were like family...only 1 original member left...soul classic

  • what's not to love?

  • Great song!!! And yes, I agree with you MrBally.......

  • When you lose love, through no fault of your own, the world is a really lonely place.

  • one of the best soul singer of the 60s,,, rip levi

  • No song I have heard in the 21st century has made me cry because of it's lyrics, it's voice or voices, the music that accompanies it, or the sheer emotion put into to the song, like this one. Motown had that rare, emotionally deep soulful sound because of the talent it signed on, the songwriters, and the desire to show how beautifully put together music can have tremendous power. I miss that all so much. Hopefully, when and/or if I go to heaven that music will be in concert all of the time.

  • the 60's in motown was the greatest place to be

  • I love this song ................... just ask the lonely a story to hard to believe, no one would believe it I am the lonely it me! I love this song so much and wow he is such a wonderful singer thank you for placing it here ;0)

  • His God-given talent was remarkable. Great Great song! Thanks for the post.

  • The female background vocalists sound angelic!

  • Hope I make to heaven cause I would sure like to hear Levi sing in person again.

  • As the baby boomer generation ages, many of us are alone (no kids, no siblings, no significant other, etc. This song means even more to us in that boat than to most. Thank you, Levi, for touching our hearts.

  • ellynelle11..............You could not said it any better!!

  • NEVER get tired of this song after all these years.....Still sucks my heart out, man he could sing.........

  • Back in this day instruments were played, and you need some kind of talent to play them, nowadays, you need no talent to make a record, it's the push a button generation.

  • @MrJames07111 Exactly! Everything is just electronically generated nowadays. You need no rhythm or musical prowess to keep the beat - the drum machine will keep it for you! As for singers, you can shout whatever you want into the microphone and the autotune machine will make you sound great (or stupid, in most situations)! BUT STILL, NOBODY CARES!!! I so want to bring real music back . . .

  • @MrJames07111 I disagree. Listen to Pretty Lights.

  • in it's own quiet way this could perhaps be their best one.

  • @jasonwheel man, do you got that right

  • great song.

  • DickAllen4HOF, U are on to something! Maybe not the very best, but the best of the Tops' many great hits. Rating: A+... Also check out Righteous Bro's. version of "Unchained Melody" (1965), it's another one that stands out far higher than the rest!

  • levi was an absolute legend just like his cousin the late great jackie wilson, god bless,

  • I was listening to the Beatles, Moody Blues, Cream and the Four Tops all in my favorite top 40 sounds of the late 60's God this song is such a great song :)

  • Words not enough to describe this,in my dj box, played it at an all dayer last year and everybody in the house was on the floor singing along to it. Got to be special to do that. I agree with all the positive comments. R.I.P lads and see you all again one day ktf

  • I beleive this song barely cracked the top 20. I consider it possibly the very best populat music song ever recoded.

  • I think I KNOW that Levi had one of the MOST beautifulest voices on the grace of this earth! I really miss him....such a shame..... Rest In Peace my friend your singing for the angels up in the sky now.

  • Classic from the '60s! What a great song! What a great group!

  • the kings of heartbreak Damn! levi could and still can squeeze tears out of a friggin' rock!!!!

  • Levi & Co. were my fav. Motown group. This song is as good as it gets!

Rating: A++. Are there any modern groups who could hold a candle to these fellows?

  • these guys were the best , we will all miss that great voice of levi. rest in peace .

  • Such emotion in that beautiful voice! It makes me cry every time I hear it.

  • Great song, fantastic performances by Levi & the Tops. Rating: A++ !

  • Nobody vamps like Levi Stubbs! He owns this song.

  • dam it lives forever

  • Everyone who has felt the pain of love & loss, can identify with this song.

As i occasionally have stated: "It doesn't get better than this!"

  • so help me , ever since this song was a hit , i have always been touched by this song ..... plus , in my life , as it was , back then , and still is , now , truly fits .... so help me god

  • This is a great version of this song because the sound is near-perfect. Fantastic song.

  • Released by Motown on January 5, 1965, it peaked at Number 24 on the Billboard Hot 100 in March of that year-

  • @christheone8773 Only 24. I consider this as among the greatest pop songs ever recorded.

  • My brother had this 1965 album and i just love it.

  • Love this song! Levi r.i.p.

  • This just might be the most hauntingly beautiful ballad ever recorded. Everytime I listen, it has the same affect it had on me the very first time I heard it.

  • @skypilot722 I couldn't put it better....that's exactly how I feel about this song.

  • @SherryAnn68 Thank you. Lead vocalsit, Levi Stubbs (RIP), was often described as having a "leonine" voice, which I think made him unique among other male vocalists. The other quality I admired about him was that, when you watch him perform, he scans the entire crowd while he is singing. Most singers pretty much confine their gaze to more limited of an area, not that that's a bad thing; it's just that Levi was practicing what "soul" music should sound AND BE like.

  • @skypilot722 Interesting information. I agree with you that he seemed to really connect with his audiences. That song just goes right to your heart. You can feel the emotional pain he's feeling,

  • @SherryAnn68 When you say the song goes right to the heart, I'm sure most would agree. I sure do. What's just so fascinating to me is that if you just lost a love and then heard this song, it would hurt really bad but that wouldn't stop one from still thinking what a beautiful song it is because it so evokes such raw emotion. I heard someone say once, I forget where or when, that there is something incredibly romantic about a broken heart. It got me to thinking about that and I still do.

  • @skypilot722 I agree with you. When you're really feeling sad or broken-hearted, it's almost cathartic to hear a song expressing the same emotions you're feeling... But I love listening to this song any time...

  • @SherryAnn68 Oh yeah, absolutely. It's too powerful not to. Sometimes I think that, and this is just me personally, when I'm really down or in pain or whatever, I almost have to "bottom out" instead of fighting it, so then the only direction to go is up. Forgot to mention that I actually have the LP featuring "Ask the Lonely" on vinyl. Do I know exactly where it is? That's a tough one.

  • THiS S0NG iS THe b0Mb!! THuMbS UP iF u AGrEE!! <33

  • my favorite 4 tops song!

  • Not many speak of Brook Benton these days, SPEAKERBOXXX7!! So many greats are now retired or long gone, sad to say...

  • It doesn't get better than this! Levi really had great style & substance was there, also. Four Tops were always on top of the Motown charts for me! RIP...

  • really good music !

  • Classic vocals, in the top 5 vocalist in the world, Curtis Mayfield, David Ruffin, Sam Cooke, Brook Benton, Levi stubbs

  • Great vocals from Levi, R.I.P.

  • The best music was made during the 60's and seventies, they bring back a lot of fond and fun memories. Today's rap (which to me is not music) is not for me. Also, this song has meaning behind it and it runs deep !!!!!!

  • The best music was made during the 60's and seventies, they bring back a lot of fond and fun memories. Today's rap (which to me is not music) is not for me.

  • Another favorite from the mid 1960's... Love his voice!

  • I was only 10 years old in 1965 and would play this constantly. Still, today, it gives me the same chills. Just so beautiful...a voice of an angel.

  • @FrankiexNYC I was 13 and get the same chills....what a great time in oue history...the 60's were the SHIT!

  • @stephen1622 sure was and still is today....it touches me every time....great memories and great meaning !!!

  • What a voice, God love you Levi!

  • I LIVED IN CHICAGO IN THE 60'S THRU THE 80'S AND THAT WAS A JAM THEN AND NOW FOR ALL WHO KNEW ABOUT GOOD MUSIC.

  • Digging this big time.

  • always makes me cry for days gone that never can come back

  • 1964, After 'Baby,I Need Your Lovin' THIS was their second Hit. GREAT Sound, BUT, They Were a GREAT Group.

  • @wolfmantip totally agree wolfman..................phenominal group....can't get enuff...........long live the 60's and Motown....ty Barry Gordie

  • @wolfmantip totally agree wolfman.......totally agree............

  • Levi sang this like he had been there. Made you feel like you weren't the only one who knew the pain.

Reast in Peace my man, and God bless.

  • No one sings this song like Levi!! He will always live with this song.My favorite Tops song of all time.

  • there are times when this song makes me ball like a baby!!!!! but that's ok. it make me think about my mother!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i love you mom, and will forever miss UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @nineballersta ohhhhh.. that's so sweeeettttttttttttttt! Kisses from Brasil!

  • I had NO IDEA the four tops sang this!! I only knew the jackson 5 version. This one is AMAZINGGG

  • @xLycrax Jackson 5 were good but don't compare them to 4 Tops when discussing " Just ask the lonely'" this is a classic like the Mona Lisa, NOBODY could ever equal this version. That's a fact!

  • If this song doesn't rate an "A+", then surely no other one does! Great Job, Levi & Co...

  • Like the comment by a former D J who said (here on You Tube) that 25 years ago they didn't call this an "oldie". It was just a great tune, as were so many thousands of other top pop songs. Amen, brother!

  • Levi Stubbs had one of the greatest voices in the history of pop music. What a wonderful gift God gave this blessed man.

  • @speakwhnspkn2 ..I cannot take a thing away from this great voice but you have to remember that before him was another great voice named..Tony Williams..the lead singer of the Platters and I myself never thought anyone was tops to him. There might be a dozen more voices to compare to, who knows, but I could listen to Levi and Tony Williams all day long. Thanks. Cya

  • @chucksterberg Tony Williams was a little before my time Chuck. However, from what I have heard from The Platters, I have to agree with you. His was a very unique voice with lots of range and very smooth. But there was also Roy Hamilton, Jackie Wilson, Johny Mathis, Clyde McPhatter (overrated to me) and others we may not have heard of, but for my money Levi is still probably my favorite.

  • Man, heartfelt soul if there ever was. What a voice. Nobody like Levi......

And Jamerson playing that simple tasty bass part We all know what he can do, but he chose "less is more" and nailed it......

  • Man, I use to step to this song before they called it stepping. LOL

A beautiful song. Rest in Peace,Levi!!!! You were the consumate gentleman through out your career!!!!

  • firme tune !!!!

    thanx for the share......5*****
