People...this is a SPEEDRUN. The point is to finish the game as fast as possible. It's not supposed to be fun. And he is playing on a super nintendo emulator which is tool-assisted. Great video man. Brings back memories.

What item you get depends on what time on the game clock you hit the item square.

I wrote a Python script to play the game over and over to work out all the times and items.

Woah. I can just do that in the first race?! This track is probably the most difficult in any MK game, and I always get my ass handed to me in 150cc. Even if I can do that in the first lap, I could still win. Or at least proceed to the nest race.

I was using a "mini-boost" trick and the American version of SMK (due to a bug, the characters are slower in the European version) and had lots of coins (coins make you faster).

It was very nearly impossible even then - if I had jumped one frame earlier I wouldn't have made it.

I like TAS videos (though "natural" ones are just as fun). It's quite interesting to see how broken these games are.

In this case, it's just absurd to the point of hilarity. Oh, but think of the frustration I'd have saved myself if I knew about 15 or so years ago that I could just pull that stunt on the first part of Special Cup. :P

On another note... I really wish Nintendo had ported more of these original tracks into Mario Kart DS. o_o
