  • this always sounds scary!!! I'm in a deathcore band....and on an song it's gonna play this then we do an epicass breakdown to the pattern of the beeping!!!!! Awsome!!!!!

  • ebn test would've never happened if Jay Leno was on

  • Duke the Late Night Rescue dog, to rescue you from the Emergency Alert System.

  • Whenever I heard a muffled voice saying it's a test as a child, it always creeped the shit out of me.

  • at 0:00 it sounds like the guy said "The fantastic sh**"

  • One of these activated the siren on my NOAA Weather Radio at about 2:30 in the morning one time. It was a freakin' Flood Warning. Maximum-volume siren scared the absolute crap out of me. I thought the house was going to be zapped. Worse? I had school the same day. Man, was I pissed.

  • @BillxMach there r optional and required codes and the test (I think) is optional

  • I would laugh if those people who listen to their music at max volume in the car and suddenly this pops up.

  • @ferrariguy1000 i would guess they would literally jump through the roof of the car if it did pop up

  • How come Britain doesn't have one of these, or if they do why don't they test it?

  • @watts4563 Canada doesn't have one either. I wish we did.

  • @watts4563 i used to have a emergency channel on my 90's tv's, not anymore, (BTW i am british as well)

  • I remember waching Big O once it said at the top:

"We are about to conduct a test of the EAS. This is only a test"

    Then,

    BBWWWAAAAAANNNNTT BWWAAAAAAANNNNTTT BWAAAAAAANNT

Now its this creepy grey box with the message in it, loud as f*** on test, silent on real alerts

  • @boobidee Well the SAME tones need to get your attention in a real emergency. it worked, didnt it?

  • @BillxMach But it was a test, they don't need to broadcast tests, I did some research.

  • @boobidee Well problem with your statement... is that they need to test it at least monthly just in case it BREAKS down and the sametones/message dont function properly; or if they fail to get the message to the people altogether. Now would you rather have a system that has never been tested, and it's for a real emergency it's gonna be used for and you DONT KNOW if it will work... or would you want a successfully tested/well maintained machine and you are confident it will work this time?

  • In the first test, why is there such a delay before the SAME tones actually sound?

  • When my parents were playing Yu-Gi-Oh! Duelist of the Roses durin a thunderstorm, Mm said when EAS apeeared on the cable box, "Look, EAS."

  • Yeah, I had Team UmiZoomi on VOD for my baby sister, and a test interrupted it.

  • The two tests in this video are actually two different ones that ran one after the other for some reason.

Encoded in the first one (blue screen) is "ZCZC-CIV-RMT-042000+0400-2280501-DURYEA-______"

Encoded in the second one (red screen) is "ZCZC-CIV-RMT-042000+0400-2280501- 0000000-______"

Google the SAME codes for what they mean. I used SeaTTY to decode 'em.

  • If this WERE an emergency. Who writes the fucking text for the video crawl, anyway?!

  • i have a friend that works with sound systems technology. he analyzed this sound at the university and found some really....i mean really creepy stuff!! there is a hidden sound wave in this msg that is "unknown" on the sound wave system we currently have!! no joke!! if you know anyone that has access to check it out see for your self! he is currently experimenting on mice with the particular sound he found, and when he plays it they just stare and dont move till its off !!! weird but true!!!!

  • @jkdomic lol. It's called SAME and the protocol is well-documented. Mice just stare at it because it's a very odd sounding modulation.

  • Comcast does that all the time, even during the daytime.

  • I guess the EAS -isn't- with Coco.

  • now to guess which ones real. lol

  • It scares me when it just happenes out of nowhere, lol conan o brien, too bad he's cancelled, lol duke the late night rescue dog

  • yes this scares the crap out of me too during the night -_-. espicially when your the only one awake to hear it. XD at 1:32 to 1:39 its duke the late night resuce dog >_0...

  • After I watched your video there were indeed two EAS tests: One from the NBC affiliate and the other from the cable company.

Here in Florida we get the same thing just around the end of the month when the Required Monthly Test is done from Tallahassee: First the cable company does the test and then the TV station I may be watching afterward.

If I fall asleep with the TV on at night by accident the EAS tones wake me up. But it's there for a reason.

  • Tornado sirens don't have and warning. Hey someone should make a tornado siren remix LOL.

  • Chewphoria! ERRRRR ERRRRRR ERRRRR That was epic

  • it would be nicer if he said the "test warning first" before the Errr noise. believe it or not, I like the noise, but not if there is a blackout or happens so suddenly.

  • @ferrariguy1000 You LIKE the noise!?

  • A video EAS??????????

  • What the FU**!!! Last night I couldn't sleep because of this bloody thing. >:-(

  • Reminds me of Sideshow Bob from The Simpsons: "By the way, I'm aware of the irony of appearing on TV in order to decry it, so don't bother pointing that out!"

But seriously. If this came on my TV while sitting next to a dark window, I'd have a massive heart attack!

  • As demonstrated here, EAS tests are fucked up...and FREQUENTLY too!

Some cable companies often do them 2, 3, even 4 times in a row every night when they're only supposed to do 1...a week.

This is an open letter to anyone in charge of an EAS system: these tests are to be done properly. This is an FCC rule. Improperly done, they pose a risk to public safety; effectively you cry wolf for every test done after the 1 you were supposed to do. Do it right or turn in your broadcasting license.

  • @mpn1990 Talk about paranoid when it comes to the frequency of the EAS tests. Ever since 9/11, we Americans aren't sure whether or not that we're 100% safe, and with our troops overseas and a couple of would-be world leaders trying to take over the world, it's like the Cold War era all over again, sans Russia being communist.

  • @mpn1990 yeah, and the first one had the EOM message twice. we dont need to hear *beep...beep...beep...*........*beep...beep...beep*

  • @mpn1990 I know right? 3 weeks ago, They did a EAS test every day of the week? There is no need for that, more importantly, they scare the shit out of people.

  • last night around 3 am while i was sleeping it went on the tv really loud, it scared the shit outta of me and about an hour later it did it again

  • My friend slept over one night and at about 2 in the morning these sounds came on and the screen warned us of a dangerous man on the loose in our location, IT WAS SO SCARY I WENT AND GOT MY BB GUN!!!

  • @22620rocks did u shoot the tv?

  • Man these alerts creep me out. I was home alone watching tv at night when suddenly those errt and beep sounds started, I tried to turn off the tv but for what gave my remote was screwin up and I was sittin right next to my window with this dark ass forest in view.

  • OMG the car crashed into the screen to reveal what's behind it: the EAS!

  • these are the main reason i sleep with "michael jacksons greatest hits on DVD" on every night!!

  • i fuckin hate these things... im sleepin and errrrrrrrrrrrrrrrttttttttttt errrrrrrrrrt errrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrt errrrrrrrrrrt beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep. they fuckin scare the shit out of me. why an't they jus like play rick roll or kiss me through the phone or sumthin

  • We had one of these just last week

A bunch of thunderstorms came rolling through, and there was a tornado warning in one of our neighboring towns

What was creepy was, I was in my room on the computer, with the TV on in the living room (my pups like to listen)

Well, it was storming outside, the lights flickered, and THOSE SOUNDS came on from the living room. My puppies ran in and hid under my covers and I ran like hell to turn the TV off

Did I mention I was alone in the house at the time?

  • Hey look everybody, it's Duke, the late night rescue dog!

  • I am not American, but this alarm system according to me good idea, similar one could be introduced onto the population's warning in Hungary, may be useful mainly on the time of the big summer storms.

  • ahh very interesting :)

  • the tones are morse codes?

  • the tones we hear are actually called 1050kz tones i think, they are suppose to jolt us when you doing something and not worried. the eas test actually is supposed to warn us of any type of threats, take 9/11 for example. we didn't know that was going to happen!

  • Tina Fey is pretty hot, even in 1/2 second increments.

  • these broadcasts always creep the hell out of me when they come on.

  • ebs broadcasts originate from your local cable franchise, I believe.

I miss the old ones, myself.

  • Does the first beep go rite thru u....like ow!

  • I'm from Harrisburg (what the test had said it originated from) as well, and on the first test at the end, there was six SAME header tones instead of four. I remember this test when I sleeping.

  • is it just me or does u-verse set off all the eas's at 3:00 AM? lol every week ill be sleepin the eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeert errrrrrrrrrrrrrt errrrrrrrrrrt beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep

  • HAHAHAHHAHAHAH MAN

  • just last week i was in Michigan and they conducted a child abduction alert on Conan

  • Ugh, I just know that those data bursts and that long tone are played on a continuous loop on the PA system in Hell

  • You have not heard of Conan O' Brein? Check your local NBC station

  • Whats NBC? What is television? Who are you? Where am I?

  • lol

  • DAMM I HAT THAT SOUND I WAZ ON DAMAND AND IT DOSE IT DERing THE SHOW

  • not for me

  • Behind the Emergency Alert system is Michael Jackson "Beat it"

  • im from pa too and in 2006/ 2007 their was a ton of those i was half awake and had been scared out of my bed. i hate the montley tests because im not sure if the test is real or fake at first. lately they have been having them where i live

  • How dare they inturpet conan~!

  • i think they interupt on demand too

  • I hate these things. I wonder if theyll really ever need it.

  • Anyone notice the capital L in channeL.?

  • i kno wat u mean nikkibabesz same here!

  • OOhhhh this is from Pennsylvania zombie country!!!!!!!!!!

  • wow im surprised lol

  • there is a emergency alert system test in 15 minutes between 7:00A.M. and 7:16A.M., on 05/17/08 . It kept repeating until 15 minutes after 7:01.

  • That first EAS test sequence originated from your city government (Duryea, Pennsylvania).

  • Yeah, that's where my cable headend is. How did you know that?

  • That was in the EAS header bursts. I recorded them and decoded them bit-by-bit, character-by-character and the word "DURYEA" was at the end of each burst.

The EAS protocol specifications are publicly accessible because they're actually written into federal law.

  • You could decode that? With what software?

  • I used Cool Edit Pro to generate a visual waveform of the header bursts and zoomed in on each individual character to decode it.

  • holy crap those things creep me out

  • i agree

  • Me too, when I was sleeping one time, and all of the sudden I hear the (EAS) test go off, and it woke me right up, and it scared the crap out of me, man I hate that when the (EAS) test goes off when I am sleeping.

  • @LitaFan03 so do i. I once got a monthly test then the next it was fine and the next i got a periodic national test (yearly test). It was sad i didnt have my camera but i was scared of the yearly i didnt even get up to pee. XD

  • Emergency Alert System. The Emergency Broadcast System lasted from 1963-1997 when it was changed.

  • 01:52

Goddamn it, Duke. You were too fucking slow.

  • i was only 4 i was watching blues clues and out of the blue came the the red screen of death with the sound of a banshee, and a man like president bush

  • What happened afterwards?

  • The eas message can force me to start searching eas messages online and now i'm in with them.

  • LOL the person talking sounds like bill clinton.

  • Once, I was watching Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air On Nick at Nite, and there were 2 Monthly Tests, 1 right after the other! As soon as the 1st one ended, the 2nd one came on! I thought I'd go into Cardiac Arrest!!!!

  • haha, the EAS interrupted the Fresh Prince on two occasions for me. I guess Jazzy Jeff's presence warrants an EAN due to excessive funk in the vicinity

  • ouch! 2 in one! thats y i dnt watch tv at night! if i do, i go 2 on demand!

  • "Duke the late night rescue dog" that was hella corny at the end!!!

  • if i ever sleep with the tv on i turn the volume off so i dont want to fucking shoot myself later i remember the first time i herd that errrr i fucking screamed its so anoying

  • It was 2004.

I was sleeping with the TV on mute while AAAAH! Real Monsters was playing on the Nicktoons Channel.

One of the tests popped up.

The screeching noises bypassed the mute.

I freaked the fuck out and shit my pants.

  • how the hell dose the noise bypass the mute theres no way in tv technolagie can sound bypass a mute

    corrct me if im whong

  • Sorry, that actually happened.

  • i need the radio to fall asleep, and the sounds came on last night, scared the sheeeeeet out of me, couldnt sleep at all last night.

  • They do that on XM too...I leave it on every night...pisses me off when I wake up to it.

  • sounds like something that would scae me with that beep and the guy talking

  • When ever I see the Chewphoria commericals I hope the EAS comes on. It never does though. :(

  • Basically the first one came through the Video Channel which was cable only. The other is through the actual TV Station. When an EAS is done, It goes through the originating station first, then it is rebroadcast to the next station as a relay. So that way in the event of an emergency the area is completely warned.

Look up the Conalrad Alerts and you'll see some of the first ones and see what stations had to go through during the cold war.

  • once i was watching TV at 3:00 AM, when the fucking thing came on. I was halfasleep, and it scared the living shit outta me! Fuck those things!

  • I removed all the comments from USA sucks ass.

  • Thanks. He got suspended. Smart ass motherfucker.

  • i was a little kid and im waching a cartoon and this thing pops out of nowhere and scared me like CRAZY

  • I hate when these come on in the middle of thre night when im dazing off. I always sit up and listen for that second tune to see if it is a real emergency. I live in a city with labs to so I think they'll do that for a chemical spill.

  • Those SAME tones scare me shitless.

  • The scariest ones are ones if you live near a military base and the voice sounds serious like its coming from a warzone radio.

  • oh my fucking christ..if i heard/saw TWO IN THE SAME MINUTE...i think i'd just have a heart attack..

everytime i watch these on youtube..i turn the volume off. XD

  • me 2!

  • this scares the living SHIT out of me!!!!!! I always wake up when it comes on! im scared by rthese so much hwenever i hear one my heart just starts pounding.

  • me too, and I'm 23. o_O

  • On my one local station, I get a green bar at the top of the screen that says "A Required Weekly Test has been issued..." and another variant is just after a commercial I get a screen with "EAS Required Weekly Test" and it says "This is a test of the EAS..." then all the buzzers and stuff.

  • Am I the only one scared shitless of seeing and hearing the test?

  • By far, no. Read the comments on my first test.

  • No, you're not the only one. I hate those things too.

  • long-lasting chewphoria!

  • The local TV Stations do a monthly test here, but never Comcast. It is always just the local TV Stations & Radio Stations.

  • I saw something similar on Darkwing Duck in 2003 that did the test.

  • This Is A Cool Video, And Cool Voice.

  • I Farking HATE that IDEA/ONICS CG-1000 EAS screen

  • This is pretty cool, I'm in New York (Cablevision) and I've actually seen 3 activations of the EAS, all "required weekly tests," over the course of 2 hours. Maybe they just didn't have their act together.

  • Just record an EAS emergency because I want to know what it looks like when it has an emergency.

  • capture what it looks like when there is a weather alert for your area

  • In my area, the EAS on TV never goes off for the weather. I don't know why, I guess it's optional for them or something. The local channels just do this non-EAS scroll across the top with the station logo or something else.

However, the radio channels use the EAS for weather bulletins.

  • That's very clever. That make a sound thats guaranteed to get peoples attention, no matter what the person is doing, even sleeping, in an event of an emergency. I wonder who come up with that sound.

  • I agree the sound is grating and annoying, but that's not the primary purpose. What you're hearing is the text of the alert, transmitted over audio like a slow (think 150-300 baud) modem. EAS is a tiered system, NOAA weather radio stations transmit the original messages usually, and EAS receivers in TV/Radio station monitor NOAA Weather Radio and usually two other large stations in the market.

  • Yep.. another PEMA monthly test.. I never caught one on TV, but I have on the radio. Pretty weird that you caught 2 in a few minutes. That happened once here. There was a weekly test, and then a National Monthly Test afterward.
