@Tina13254 thanks for your response. I assume having priority would mean that maybe Tyler (for ex.) caught the past 3 waves and had more rides so Carissa is allowed to just grab the wave?

Priority is given to a surfer who makes it to the lineup or the peak first. In his case, Carissa made it to the peak first which gave her priority.

As a male surfer that's grown up watching female surfing since the early 80's, it hasn't really had my respect until now. Watching this contest has blown me away. The likes of Carissa, Tyler, Coco etc are amazing. I don't say this lightly. In these conditions, I'd rather watch them than half of the CT guys. No bullshit. Apart from the top 10-20 guys, these girls put on a great show. Mature surfing from such young girls. They may still be a long way back in heavy surf but in beachies, WOW
