@3577Yankee People don't give flying craps, as craps cannot fly. Perhaps you mean, "who gives a FALLING crap?". In addition, congratulations on being American. \sarcasm
Maybe it was because Americans pronounce Toronto as "Toe-ron-toe" while in Toronto I've heard many different pronunciations: Tuh ron no - Tron toe - Trawno etc. lol and nobody outside of Canada pronounces the name of the city like that, for them it probably sounds like a completely different place... Maybe that particular controller hasn't heard that way of pronouncing it lol. sorry for typos falling asleep on keyboard as I type lol -.- ZZzZz
I love reading all the comments here. They fucken make me laugh. If you listen he doesnt say that Toronto is in a state he asks what state is Toronto north of. I am from Toronto, and im agreeing with my American friends on this one, But Toronto is a Major city and the ATC should have a clue on where it is. Some of the Air Canada tape must of been cut off from 0:18 because the ATC couldn't come in and say its north west of Niagara falls out of the blue with out Air Canada saying anything. #Learn
Another fine example of the fact that most Americans haven't got a clue about any other geography than their own sorry country. Their education system is just pitiful. How ironic that they know nothing about other countries, yet their economic situation affects everyone.
@ProudtobeCanadiannow actually, since you obviously have no fucking clue about the airline profession, and you are one of those experts that put in their two cents on every video... ATC identifiers are America based only, when a person learns the identifier for different regional/international airport outside of the country during training, they are not aware of locations... try memorizing 782 Airport identifiers and their location just for the US, ya. thats what i thought.
@ProudtobeCanadiannow i would very much appreciate it if you would not stereotype Americans. I am american and i am not unintelligent. Thank You for your understanding.
The funniest Toronto geographical mistake I've seen is in the recent movie Contagion. They've got a smart board up of North America and label Montreal as "Toronto". It's the only Canadian city up there!
Why are you defending the air traffic controller? The fact that he didn't know where Toronto is, is just plain ignorant, not to mention the fact that he asked what state it was in. I don't care if he worked 5 miles or 3000 miles from it, as an air traffic controller especially basic geographical knowledge is a must. It just shows the fundamental flaws in the American education system and there plain ignorance for everything outside of there own country. This video disgusts me.
@tylerpilot Controllers assign routes, not based on US state boundaries or the accuracy of their memory of geography, but by navigation waypoints. American education? Of course it's a mess! We established that many decades ago - glad you're caught up. That isn't the story here. The Air Canada pilots, with their superior Canadian education, didn't know the answer either without consulting a chart.
@dcs002 Controllers don't assign routes flight planning of the airline does. You have to be retarded he says it was NNE of Niagra falls. Other then give an actual heading its pretty was close to a direction from the falls you can get, you would have to be stupid think they didnt know where Toronto was you think its there first flight there? No its one of AC largest hubs and training center hes been there, plenty of times before. And BTW no one uses charts anymore so I doubt he consulted it,
Someone commented on my post, not sure how to comment back but its just entertaining. in Canadian school we learn the geographical information of Canada and the US. are schools are much different. our way of teaching is different
For the record, I've seen (and made) distance estimates over a wide range. According to mapcrow dot info, the air distance from Las Vegas to Toronto is 1,944.41 miles, or 3,129.14 km. It's a long, long way from the airspace this guy controls. (If anyone cares, Nizhny Novgorod to Paris is 1,790.88 miles, or 2,882.07 km. Moscow to Paris is 1,544.10 miles, 2,484.92 km.)
@Bean6Bagger9 Yes, and we all know where it is, right? It's just north/northeast of a region where three US states have their boundaries within ~40 miles of each other. Without looking at a map, can you name the three states? Can you say for sure which of these three it is north of? (That's what the controller asked.) Can you say which Great Lake it sits on? Why should a departure controller, who only works with traffic some 2,000 miles away, know those details?
This honestly scares me. How can people be so ignorant! The atc and the pilot didn't even know were Toronto really is... Its in CANADA, not AMERICA, its not a fuckin state. Toronto is in Ontario, CANADA.... Ontario is a province! I live in Toronto... I still cant believe it.... Anyway, Happy New Year everyone...!
@Bugstomper2 The pilot isn't the point at issue. The ATC unfamiliar with the geography of a destination airport 1700 miles away that only gets 2-3 flights a day is the issue.
@phobal Yes but Toronto is still a very big city! Even though apparently it gets 2-3 flights from LAS everyday, the air traffic controller still needs to know were it is.... He called it a state, it isn't a state, its a city in Ontario. Ontario is a province in Canada...Toronto Pearson is a big airport, its the 20th busiest airport by international traffic (in the world). So you should expect air traffic controllers to know that Toronto is not in America but rather Canada....
@AlexBkatzmann And the top 7 are all American airports, with #2 through #6 surrounding Las Vegas (itself #9 on that list), or between Las Vegas and Toronto. To fly that trip, a plane leaves from the 9th busiest airport (traffic movements per day) and, depending on routing, could fly past (or near) numbers 2, 5, 14, & 16 (& possibly 4, 12, or 15) before arriving at #18 on that list, Toronto Pearson. That's a tall crowd to see over.
@dcs002 a city of an agglomeration of 5 milions inhabitants and the tallest building in the world. anyone who is an air controler in north america and europe should at least know the existence of the city. air controlling espacially demands geographic knowledge of cities around the world.... its like if i didnt know the existence of miami, boston or frankfurt, berlin, liverpool... the guy is just dumb.
@AlexBkatzmann Are you really that dedicated to missing my point? He knows where Toronto is! It's just that there are 3 US states to the south, and he simply asked which one Toronto (never a major concern to a departure controller in Miami - get real) was north of. Do you really not get that?
@dingdongditch1000 I do in general agree that he ought to know it better but please listen to what people say before bullsh****** about them:
"Air Canada594 what state is, what US state is that eh north of?" - pretty clear.
Implies that he know it´s not in the US but in Canada and for his routing he just wanted to know what state he was going to fly through before being given over to Canadian ATC I´d say.
He's probably trying to figure out the best route for them.. He never said "Where is Toronto?" Or "I don't know where Toronto is." He asked which US state it is north of, so what if he doesn't know Toronto's exact location. He's from the west coast of the US I don't know exactly where Las Vegas is either.
OH NO. . . don't say Toronto ain't the center of the universe. You will disappoint a couple million people who have no clue where this airtraffic controller lives. ..
He clearly know where it is. He asks which "state it is north of". I know Toronto is in Canada but I couldn't have told you it was NNE of Niagara falls.
I am canadian from outside of winnipeg. I work in the US and work along side of American co-workers. I get this. It is much easier for me to say I live north of north dakota then saying that I live somewhere in the middle of canada. For most Americans they do not know international geography and where foreign cities and countries are on the map. No big deal. Also for those of you that live in Toronto you are not the centre of the Canadian universe.
@sweiland75 I'm terribly sorry you had to use the last of your braincells in order to come up with that one since you are so terribly inbred. You came crying to me blubbering that I claimed that Winnipeg was the centre of the universe, well I'm right its not. Its a horrible crime infested city with nothing going for it, I've had the unfortunate opportunity to visit that boring little berg. I was not impressed at all.
To answer the question if you listen the reply should of been New york. North by North east of Niagara falls Or YYZ in your IATA airport identification code look it up! lol
yeah clearly he asked a legitimate question, If he was truly an ass he would have pretended to know where it was and possibly give out improper instructions. Kudos for asking questions in life instead thinking you know everything! Thumbs up!
Ok, the departure controller who lives ~2,500 miles from Toronto wasn't an "A" student in geography, but at least he asked. What's missing from this recording is the reason he asked that question. Probably trying to do Air Canada a favor and get them some better routing or a more favorable cruise altitude. We're so quick to find a reason to mock people and so slow to think well of them. Why?
@dcs002 ok as a controller you should know the major cities around you! for heavens sake i control on VATSIM and honestly if i had no clue where i was controlling and what the country beside me busiest airport is then i have a problem!!! and pilots NEVER file the wrong flight altitude as it is set by dispatch! and if atc needs to amend it then they look at there previous filed altitude and whether its odd or even. and departure cannot change routing other than departure !
@Airplan3z101 Toronto is not a major city around Las Vegas. Those would be San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Salt Lake City, Denver, Phoenix, Tijuana... do you see a theme? (Hint: Look at a map.)
@dcs002 Usually an air traffic controller knows where the 5th largest city on the continent is, thats like a German air traffic controller not knowing where Paris is.
@RealPilotFSX lol now you speak, yea sure the guy who doesn`t know where the 5th largest city on the continent is and largest city in Canada. Yup he sounds like a genius alright, whats with the hostility bad day at the office?"
@BostonCreamDonut I was never hostile.. if anyone was, it was you, calling me an "idiot".
just calling you out on your lie. And it's not uncommon for an american to not know exactly where Toronto is. It's weird to ask about it over VHF though.
@RealPilotFSX If its uncommon for an American not to know where Toronto is, especially an air traffic controller, doesn`t that outline a massive flaw in us education? not that im offended its just inexcusable for someone in that profession not to know where a large city like that is.
@dcs002 Actually no it isnt if you were smart you would know that Paris is the 5th largest city in Europe, just like how Toronto is the 5th largest in North America. Its the same thing. Just another example of the poor US education system. The scary thing is you seem to be proud of it.
@BostonCreamDonut Ok, I'll spell it out. Toronto is more than 2,000 miles from Las Vegas, where this controller lives and works. Paris is less than 200 miles from Germany. Nizhny Novgorod is the 5th largest city in Russia, and it's less than 2,000 miles from Germany. And it's not like this controller didn't know where Toronto was. He just didn't know where it was in relation to specific US states on the other side of the continent. Nizhny Novgorod is quite fair in comparison.
BostonCreamDonut, I'll give you the reverse. Perhaps this would compare with a controller in Nizhny Novgorod not knowing where Paris is in relation to Switzerland or Belgium. He knows it's in France, but is it across the border from Belgium, or is it closer to the Swiss border? And why should he know that detail?
@dcs002 Again you must be really slow to think comparing a city that is hardly know in Europe and not even in the top 20 biggest cities on the continent to a city that is the 5th largest on its continent, is ``fair`` Distance between cities doesn`t matter, its common knowledge for an airtraffic controler to know where the top 5 cities on the continent are, this controller failed, and quite frankly so did you.
@BostonCreamDonut "Common knowledge?" What do you base that on? If it makes sense to you, who have no experience as a controller, probably never been in a tower or on the flight deck of an airliner, if it makes sense to you, with your limited experience & understanding, you assume it's common knowledge.
@dcs002 lmao you`re the one trying to attempt to compare a city that`s for 1 not a major city or hub on its continent to a city that is a major city and hub on its continent, looks like you`re the one with limited experience and common knowledge.
@dcs002 Nevermind If you want to go by distance i`ll give you a good comparison thats like a Moscow air traffic controller not knowing where Paris is distance from Paris to Moscow - 2484 km. Distance from Toronto to Vegas - 2371 km.
@BostonCreamDonut Common knowledge assumptions aside, the controller knew where Toronto was. What he didn't know was it's relation to the nearest US states. Would you assume a Moscow controller would know the location of Paris relative to Belgium or Luxembourg, or the German border, without consulting a map? He just asked. This is not newsworthy, unusual, funny, or worthy of insult, but it does draw out the know-it-alls & wannabes to show themselves.
@dcs002 I find it hilarious now how you`re running away from your comparison of Novgorad to Toronto. Thinking its a fair comparison, that`s pretty much enough for me to come to the conclusion that you are a complete moron. You fail. Nice try though champ.
@BostonCreamDonut You're running away from the fact that the controller knew full well where Toronto was, but not in relation to the several US state boundaries. You're also mischaracterizing my words to you. I said, "Perhaps this would compare with a controller in Nizhny Novgorod not knowing where Paris is in relation to Switzerland or Belgium." The point is not whether Nizhny Novgorod is a major city, but whether a guy from there would know the borders near Paris.
@dcs002 BostonCreamDonut, in my comments to you, Nizhny Novgorod, a major city indeed (and how do you know it's not a major hub?), in my analogy takes the place of Vegas, not Toronto, though in my comments earlier I did say it the other way around. But in geography, distance matters. And remember, the guy's only a departure controller. He only works with traffic near the Las Vegas airport, not on the other side of the continent.
@dcs002 Look kid, i`ve got better things to do, if there`s one thing i`ve learned on youtube its never argue with an idiot, they`ll drag you down to their level and beat you with experience. So on that note i`ll be the bigger man here and walk away from this sad situation you`ve created here. Go ahead an click reply, but don`t expect a response back, you`re boring me bye bye.
@BostonCreamDonut Bye bye then. BTW, "kid," I'm 45 years old, a licensed pilot and part 121 dispatcher (also a PhD neuroscientist), I've racked up many jumpseat hours in real planes, and I've shadowed controllers. I was roommates with a controller too. You can't answer my criticisms because you are ignorant, though you pretend (poorly) that you're not. If you're so fascinated in aviation, go to school and get into it! You don't have to pretend!
@dcs002 Again you don`t understand, it seems as if you have a room temperature IQ, Is Novgorod a major hub city in Europe? NO it is not, its not even anywhere near the biggest cities in Europe. Now back to Toronto is it a major hub city in North America?
YES. Novgorod is not in anyway a fair comparison. Toronto is one of the largest cities in its Continent, Novgorod is not. Get it now?
@BostonCreamDonut Toronto may be the 5th largest city, but from an air traffic perspective it is a much smaller airport than those that surround Las Vegas, and much smaller than Las Vegas itself. And how the hell would a person like YOU know what a smart person would know? And what makes you think I don't know that? I know where Toronto is, but I wouldn't try to drive there without a highway map, nor would I try to re-route a plane there without adequate reference points.
@dcs002 Lmao you are an idiot. Just like the so called traffic controller in this video. I was never even arguing with you and I don`t intend on starting another one up with an obvious know it all im never wrong yankee like yourself. There`s a saying - Arguing on youtube is like the special olympics, if you win you`re still a retard. So on that note bye bye.
@insane28301 Nizhny Novgorod population = 1.25 million - 5th largest city in Russia. Not exactly a "very minor city." Just a long way from Germany and the rest of the Western geographical bias. (But it's still far closer to Germany than Toronto is to Las Vegas.)
Regardless of if he asked what us state is Toronto north of, thats basic geography, and I would expect someone in the business of air travel to know basic georgraphy.
@16piller16lol ....wrong.. and we know and where the Big Apple and L.A and Seattle are and so on..
Some info for our friends to the south.... Toronto is Canadas New York but on the great lakes, Vancouver is Canadas LA , Fort Mcmurray is Canadas Tulsa except Fort Mac STILL is though of as the oil capital of the world here lol .....
Ps....London England is East of Newfoundland ..check out my channel if you dont know where Newfoundland is

He clearly know where it is. He asks which "state it is north of". I know Toronto is in Canada but I couldn't have told you it was NNE of Niagara falls.

My guess is that the ATC knew exactly where Toronto was, just having a bit of fun with the pilots :)

@juantrippe82 No one would ever claim Winnipeg as the centre of the universe. Dumbass.

Here's a simple answer for the controller, 'Its in Canada!''

To answer the question if you listen the reply should of been New york. North by North east of Niagara falls Or YYZ in your IATA airport identification code look it up! lol

Why?
dcs002 8 months ago 31
@dcs002 ok as a controller you should know the major cities around you! for heavens sake i control on VATSIM and honestly if i had no clue where i was controlling and what the country beside me busiest airport is then i have a problem!!! and pilots NEVER file the wrong flight altitude as it is set by dispatch! and if atc needs to amend it then they look at there previous filed altitude and whether its odd or even. and departure cannot change routing other than departure !
Airplan3z101 2 months ago
@Airplan3z101 Toronto is not a major city around Las Vegas. Those would be San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Salt Lake City, Denver, Phoenix, Tijuana... do you see a theme? (Hint: Look at a map.)
dcs002 1 month ago
@dcs002 Usually an air traffic controller knows where the 5th largest city on the continent is, thats like a German air traffic controller not knowing where Paris is.

BostonCreamDonut 1 month ago
@BostonCreamDonut I was never hostile.. if anyone was, it was you, calling me an "idiot".
just calling you out on your lie. And it's not uncommon for an american to not know exactly where Toronto is. It's weird to ask about it over VHF though.
No hard feelings
RealPilotFSX 1 month ago
@RealPilotFSX If its uncommon for an American not to know where Toronto is, especially an air traffic controller, doesn`t that outline a massive flaw in us education? not that im offended its just inexcusable for someone in that profession not to know where a large city like that is.
BostonCreamDonut 1 month ago
@BostonCreamDonut god you are a clueless troll
RealPilotFSX 1 month ago
@RealPilotFSX Ya im the troll alright, and you seem to have a room temperature IQ.
BostonCreamDonut 1 month ago
@BostonCreamDonut No, it's more like a German controller not knowing where Novgorod is.
dcs002 1 month ago
@dcs002 Actually no it isnt if you were smart you would know that Paris is the 5th largest city in Europe, just like how Toronto is the 5th largest in North America. Its the same thing. Just another example of the poor US education system. The scary thing is you seem to be proud of it.
BostonCreamDonut 1 month ago 24
@BostonCreamDonut Ok, I'll spell it out. Toronto is more than 2,000 miles from Las Vegas, where this controller lives and works. Paris is less than 200 miles from Germany. Nizhny Novgorod is the 5th largest city in Russia, and it's less than 2,000 miles from Germany. And it's not like this controller didn't know where Toronto was. He just didn't know where it was in relation to specific US states on the other side of the continent. Nizhny Novgorod is quite fair in comparison.
dcs002 1 month ago
BostonCreamDonut, I'll give you the reverse. Perhaps this would compare with a controller in Nizhny Novgorod not knowing where Paris is in relation to Switzerland or Belgium. He knows it's in France, but is it across the border from Belgium, or is it closer to the Swiss border? And why should he know that detail?
dcs002 1 month ago
@dcs002 Again you must be really slow to think comparing a city that is hardly know in Europe and not even in the top 20 biggest cities on the continent to a city that is the 5th largest on its continent, is ``fair`` Distance between cities doesn`t matter, its common knowledge for an airtraffic controler to know where the top 5 cities on the continent are, this controller failed, and quite frankly so did you.
BostonCreamDonut 1 month ago
@BostonCreamDonut "Common knowledge?" What do you base that on? If it makes sense to you, who have no experience as a controller, probably never been in a tower or on the flight deck of an airliner, if it makes sense to you, with your limited experience & understanding, you assume it's common knowledge.
dcs002 1 month ago
@dcs002 lmao you`re the one trying to attempt to compare a city that`s for 1 not a major city or hub on its continent to a city that is a major city and hub on its continent, looks like you`re the one with limited experience and common knowledge.
BostonCreamDonut 1 month ago
@dcs002 Nevermind If you want to go by distance i`ll give you a good comparison thats like a Moscow air traffic controller not knowing where Paris is distance from Paris to Moscow - 2484 km. Distance from Toronto to Vegas - 2371 km.
BostonCreamDonut 1 month ago
@BostonCreamDonut Common knowledge assumptions aside, the controller knew where Toronto was. What he didn't know was it's relation to the nearest US states. Would you assume a Moscow controller would know the location of Paris relative to Belgium or Luxembourg, or the German border, without consulting a map? He just asked. This is not newsworthy, unusual, funny, or worthy of insult, but it does draw out the know-it-alls & wannabes to show themselves.
dcs002 1 month ago
@dcs002 I find it hilarious now how you`re running away from your comparison of Novgorad to Toronto. Thinking its a fair comparison, that`s pretty much enough for me to come to the conclusion that you are a complete moron. You fail. Nice try though champ.
BostonCreamDonut 1 month ago
@BostonCreamDonut You're running away from the fact that the controller knew full well where Toronto was, but not in relation to the several US state boundaries. You're also mischaracterizing my words to you. I said, "Perhaps this would compare with a controller in Nizhny Novgorod not knowing where Paris is in relation to Switzerland or Belgium." The point is not whether Nizhny Novgorod is a major city, but whether a guy from there would know the borders near Paris.
dcs002 1 month ago
@dcs002 BostonCreamDonut, in my comments to you, Nizhny Novgorod, a major city indeed (and how do you know it's not a major hub?), in my analogy takes the place of Vegas, not Toronto, though in my comments earlier I did say it the other way around. But in geography, distance matters. And remember, the guy's only a departure controller. He only works with traffic near the Las Vegas airport, not on the other side of the continent.
dcs002 1 month ago
@dcs002 Look kid, i`ve got better things to do, if there`s one thing i`ve learned on youtube its never argue with an idiot, they`ll drag you down to their level and beat you with experience. So on that note i`ll be the bigger man here and walk away from this sad situation you`ve created here. Go ahead an click reply, but don`t expect a response back, you`re boring me bye bye.
BostonCreamDonut 1 month ago
@BostonCreamDonut Bye bye then. BTW, "kid," I'm 45 years old, a licensed pilot and part 121 dispatcher (also a PhD neuroscientist), I've racked up many jumpseat hours in real planes, and I've shadowed controllers. I was roommates with a controller too. You can't answer my criticisms because you are ignorant, though you pretend (poorly) that you're not. If you're so fascinated in aviation, go to school and get into it! You don't have to pretend!
dcs002 1 month ago
@dcs002 Again you don`t understand, it seems as if you have a room temperature IQ, Is Novgorod a major hub city in Europe? NO it is not, its not even anywhere near the biggest cities in Europe. Now back to Toronto is it a major hub city in North America?
YES. Novgorod is not in anyway a fair comparison. Toronto is one of the largest cities in its Continent, Novgorod is not. Get it now?
BostonCreamDonut 1 month ago
@BostonCreamDonut Toronto may be the 5th largest city, but from an air traffic perspective it is a much smaller airport than those that surround Las Vegas, and much smaller than Las Vegas itself. And how the hell would a person like YOU know what a smart person would know? And what makes you think I don't know that? I know where Toronto is, but I wouldn't try to drive there without a highway map, nor would I try to re-route a plane there without adequate reference points.
dcs002 1 month ago
@dcs002 Lmao you are an idiot. Just like the so called traffic controller in this video. I was never even arguing with you and I don`t intend on starting another one up with an obvious know it all im never wrong yankee like yourself. There`s a saying - Arguing on youtube is like the special olympics, if you win you`re still a retard. So on that note bye bye.
BostonCreamDonut 1 month ago 2
@dcs002 Novogorod is a very minor city, Toronto is not.
insane28301 1 month ago
@insane28301 Nizhny Novgorod population = 1.25 million - 5th largest city in Russia. Not exactly a "very minor city." Just a long way from Germany and the rest of the Western geographical bias. (But it's still far closer to Germany than Toronto is to Las Vegas.)
