how was the viola only recognised as a solo instrument in the 20th century? composers were writing solo stuff for viola long before the 20th century weren't they
not really. there's telemann and hoffmeister, stamitz and a few others. but that's such a small volume of music compared to violin repertoire, which had hundreds written for it.
i get so mad bc the violin part ALWAYS has the melody. we always have the harmony. i'm not griping but we need the spotlight too, right? and when someone asks me what i play i say the viola and they say "what's is that." i get so mad. i'm sure you feel my pain
No it's ok I learned to enjoy that. It's like a well kept secret. I learned violin too but playing the melody all the time is boring, the harmony to music is really interesting and sounds good on the instrument. Knowing how loud to play in a string quartet and keeping the tempo flowing are things that make the viola similar to being a conductor in quartet : P
I feel your pain! But violins and cellos have so much written for them , that they are becoming boring. So in a way it is good that viola has not recieved so much recognition, because it has made the instrument more of a treasure rather than a tool . so the jokes on them! ;D
good violists don't give a shit about being in the spotlight
