Suppressors reduce the amount of noise that comes out of the gun and are useful in combat zones to make the enemy think that a smaller weapon is being used. However, you can still definitely hear the gunshot - at least in the case of supersonic sounds. The idea of hearing a little "pyoo!" sound when firing a "silenced" gun is largely a myth.
