Very melodic, yet not gay, but still very brutal, unlike those fucking melodeath bands from Gothenburg. The melodies even create eerie, melancholic, and dark atmosphere of death. Perfect example of how to create a deathly atmosphere in a death metal song. This is the reason why DEATH - SBG is considered by many as 1st true death metal album in contrast to Possessed's Seven Churches which lacks such quality.
so i guess dismember isnt my favorite band for a long time now, and this song i guess is not the most technicaly complex nor the best song ever made or anything like that, but its the only song that i can never get tired of and i must of listened to it thousands of times since i first heard it like 15 years ago.
Ah what memories. Last time I saw this I was about 15 (I'm 32 now). Back then I ignored the melodic intro and remember loving seeing the singer bound with his head bowed down shouting the first lines. Looking back that is a class intro.
@OuchMyGlands666 : Exactly mate. Now 38 going on 39,but still, when i listen to that early stuff i get the same emotions as i did back then. The newer "forms" of Death Metal won't have as much impact i think!! DEATH METAL FOR PASSION NOT FOR FASHION!!!!
This video and the creepy, low-fi vibe captures that early 90's death metal atmosphere so perfectly. To all the younger kids who are getting into this shit that us old geezers grew up on, that feeling this is giving you right now is exactly what got us into this.
This song is so moody! The video is charming but not cheesy...quite unusual these days :) From 1:50 and onward is so chilling! Great atmospthere through the whole song...thanks for uploading...Best, Sandemose
Dismember has alot of great metal songs this one being one of my favs....Arch Enemy is an incredible band but I wish Johan Liiva was bck at the helm. I dont care for Angelas voice-although the music is still the best.
Dismember are unbelievably good, I love Swedish Old School before Gothenburg took over the scene, this song is very beautiful and melodic but so brutal!! unlike those gay Gothenburg bands
I agree, scadinavian death metal in its purest, but i cant say that the Gothenberg scene is one not to be embraced. It gave us At the Gates, Dark Tranquillity, In Flames and influenced bands like Arch Enemy. That is not bad in my book.
Arch Enemy is an ok band, i cant say that they are amazing but they are one of the most prominent bands to come out of the gothemburg scene or to implement melodeath elements into their music. But The gothemburg scene (or the big 3: In flames, Dark Tranquillity, At the Gates) are still good bands to listen too. Granted the scene will always have second place, in first is my love for true Scandinavian death metal: Dismember, Unleashed, Hypocrisy, (Old) Darkthrone, etc.
You clearly never knew that their first album "Soulside Journey" was a death metal album, then they changed to black metal. Hense, why i said "(old) Darkthrone" as opposed to their black metal stuff.
The misunderstanding comes from misinterpretation. I consider old either anything earlier than the newest release, or anything earlier than when I discovered the band. So, for example, Transilvanian Hunger is 15 years old but definitely not death metal. It is Darkthrone's early work that is death metal, not their old work. Their Thulcandra demo from 1989 is really good too, great band anyway :-)
Well yeah, but old darkthrone could also be considered A Blaze in Northern Sky and Under funeral Moon, both of which were quoted by Ferinz as "death metal riffs played in a black metal style." I dont even consider anything past Ravishing Grimness to be pure darkthrone, due to the prevalence of punk elements, and they strayed too far from their black and death metal style. But hey, thats just me.
idk man. I would definately say that Plaguewielder is black. I know most people group it with the "impure" later albums, but i guess its just personal definition.
I really dont like Plaguewielder or Hate them, because its the beginning of their stylistic change. Its not that its impure, but so much that its not where Darkthrone (in my mind) should be.They are black metal legends, and i always figured that they would stay in that genre. But before that, Darkthrone switched their style once before from death->black metal, so i guess its no too far fetched to say that they could change again.
I would consider all their albums from A Blaze In The Northern Sky to Sardonic Wrath black metal. They still have some black metal elements in terms of Teds guitar style on The Cult Is Alive, or even on certain parts of Dark Thrones And Black Flags even if they are not actually black metal. I mean they are obviously influenced by punk and NWOBHM a lot, but that said ive never heard those kinds of bands play riffs in the way Darkthrone do, in terms of picking style or whatever.
O, i dont mean that they abandoned all of their black metal, but its covered up by their new sound a bit too much. I'm not the biggest fan of genre mixing (i despise deathcore) but, some bands o it well. I just think that Punk and Black metal and NWOBHM are a bit hard to mix and make everyone happy.
Well, I'm certainly not a fan of deathcore! Terrible contrived rubbish. I dunno, if you consider that earlier black metal artists had some punk influence, such as Cronos (Sex Pistol/Sham 69) and Quorthon (GBH) its possible, although it would fare less well if mixed with 90's black metal I suppose. I think they do it well, although I suppose its an aquired taste. I still prefer their earlier death and black metal periods of course, but I love all their stuff.
Yeah, i mean, i dont Hate their new stuff, i just think its not as good as their old stuff. After all, its impossible to recreate something better than A blaze in Northern Sky or Under a Funeral Moon. I dont mind punk in metal too much (grindcore does it fairly well), just if it takes away from the overall sound and appeal then i kind of have an issue with it (deathcore).
Dismember are the greatest DM band ever! Right after them I think it's Entombed. Nocturnus, Cannibal Corpse, Gorgoth, Grave and Carnage are a few others I love. Death Metal - an awesome genre.
saw them allready twice but sure as hell won't miss the next shows in my area! would love it if they would come again with the masters of death tour together with grave and unleashed. and yeah, entombed can also come, as roadies :)
This is probably the best song about dying and also the best song ever. Tell you what: after hearing this live I can die peacefully. Seriously, Dismember performs "Dreaming in Red" so fucking awesome that nothing can be compared to it.
Dismember means for me the rawest, brutalest guitarsound with great melodies. They lived in the shadow of Entombed in the '90s, but I think, they're better than Entombed. Unfortunately, Dismember is an underrated band.
