Some of you guys are acting like all samurai were these noble and honorable warriors fighting with virtue for the good of the people. Not true. Bushido was an IDEAL and not everyone followed it. Some samurai, believe it or not, were straight out jerks and cretins. Concerning ninja, it was far more dishonorable to disobey your lord than stab someone in the back. Some ninja were farmers, yes. However there were quite a few ninja who where also indeed samurai.

@Deathwingie Maybe towards later periods that was more common, but there were still come good samurai. All out war was much less frequent at the later periods, so yes, the role of the samurai as a soldier was less prevalent. But like I said, there were still some good samurai and ronin.
you seem to be approaching it under the pretense that honor means the same thing here as in japan...
and im not sure where you got the 1v1 thing... almost ALL kenjutsu ryu teach reflexive response to attackers behind you, following your kill of the target in front.... if samurai only did 1v1 these ryu wouldnt train for other fighting...
now we move on to ninja were not assassins, they were about information, not kills.
@bangooisgood its like he said samurai=shinobi=ninja and bushido was the ideal like european knights also have their kodex but to win you kill someone from behind as well and samurai who got knowen for their great skills at scouting were used to do thinks like sapotage scouting and so on so the shinobi form started...
ninjas were not samurai. it was seen as to be cowardly to be a ninja. i respect only the samurai since they didn't fight dirty(EX. the black egg, meant to blind you, the hand claw meant to give you a petty cut to annoy you.) you cant respect a dirty player.Bushido would make a samurai-ninja (god forbid) commit seppeku after his first mission. thus they didn't exist. plus ninjas were farmers who were mistreated by the samurai.

My grandma in World War 2 was a great samurai and still wield her katana strongly in the kitchen today.

True the samurai weren't honourable at all because there was no use for them, they were mostly drunks and gamblers and didnt need to fight.

Samurai's based their beliefs on bushido (the way of the samurai), and bushido required honor and a noble soul.
samurais usually fought their opponents one to one, rather than secrecy because they thought this was the honorable way to fight another samurai.
Now unless you think stabbing someone in the back or while they were asleep is an honorable, then yeah i guess samurais were ninjas.
