I think you're missing the point o the story. She's a shopaholoic, and then her excessive spending gets her ass in trouble. I know a girl who made the same mistake. Putting herself in debt buying things she wanted but never could afford. Tragedies are also comedic. That's why the book was written. It's not glorifying spending, it's showing the consequences of a highly consumerist culture. Albeit in a more sugar coated way then say.. "Fight Club"?
