Benimaru gets points for at least being visibly ripped- even if slim- and most especially for being a shootboxer, which was basically mixed martial arts decades before the UFC came around. Ash is a freckle-faced rail-thin teenager, has a ludicrous fighting stance, and seems to win all his fights in-story by having better flamey powers than anyone else rather than actually outfighting them.

What I'd REALLY like to see is Gai Tendo putting on some asbestos jammies and breaking him in half :-)

I can't speak for others, but I hate how his rabid fanbase loves him just for being an stylish anti-hero. Sure, his design is stylish and weird, but as a visual kei design, that's how it's supposed to be; that doesn't mean that I'm a bigot for not falling in love with him, as his fans are so eager to claim.

Never claimed you to be a bigot. I think he's deliciously evil, and fun to use(great poke character with combo potential when used right). As for the Remy thing, it just bugs me when people say he's a clone of Remy, while disregarding that Remy was a walking Iori. The visual stylings of the two is an obvious rip from Capcom. Then again, 3S needed a "Guile", I guess.

I hear you on the rabid fanbase though. Drives me nuts to keep hearing "ZOMG ASH CRIMSON 4EVA!1!".

Haha, what's funny is, I never used Guile, and I've been playing SF since SSF2ST, I just recently started using Guile in Netplay thanks to my hours of using Ash on 2003/XI.

You know, after playing both of them completely, I'll have to retract my previous statement of Ash not being a copy...his b+A or b+D are direct mimics of Guile's from ST. Also, they have the same poke combos, like Guile's standing LP to back + MK. Only difference is Ash isn't in range to throw afterwards. Pretty neat.

Of course he didn't technically defeat Iori. He took his powers in the same way he took Chizuru's. Came on the scene when they were too weak to put up a fight and put them down. In Iori's case he is left defenseless after the Riot of the Blood wears off. When it did, Ash moved in and stole his treasure. Kyo better be on his in KOF XIII because I hear XII will have no storyline whatsoever.

Remember, when Iori goes crazy in a cutscene, a minimum of 2 people tend to get curbstomped, if not outright killed. So in that respect, it's sort of important.

Also, Yashiro has the power of earth. So his power is using the planet itself - mainly by slamming you into it again and again and again and again.....and again and again... then using a DM to slam you again and again and...

Those are... really good points. All of them would be true if not for the Rival Team ending in KOF XI. Elizabeth Blanctorche identifies "Ash" as The Orochi, after 'he' says "I'm not the person I used to be". His eyes (glowing, evil) also kinda gave it away. Ash Crimson, the original, WASN'T The Orochi. But he was (to quote an ending comment by "ash")- "Don't reveal your trump card till the end- the very end!". His body became like Chris'.

As for the Orochi; yeah he/it is pretty admirable in some respects. About Ash, he could very well be a hero and doing all this for a higher purpose, faking his intentions... But I find surprising that he got more popular than the previous hero K', who is much better looking and more interesting gameplay-wise.

See, by now Ash has beaten both Chizuru and Iori, and they're considered two of the toughest characters in the series. (Although it wasn't like they were at full power at the time).

That, combined with the waxy green flames, means that Ash is the strongest and most... unique-looking fighter at the moment. And THAT'S what makes him so popular. If you have friends who were into DBZ, you know how they acted when they first say Broly. Same thing.
