this is like watching wrestling you know it is a fix but it is compelling anyway. Federer could have destroyed Sampras but gave it a close game for the crowd.
I highly doubt they would fix a match between 2 champions (even more unlikely they would do it multiple times) and I highly doubt Federer would go easy on Sampras, it's highly disrespectful (oh, I'm too good for Sampras, I'll go easy so he thinks we're having a close match) and out of character. Sampras is still a great player and still the best serve and volley'er and has shown he can still push Federer somewhat
Stupid fans are booing when the shot was clearly out so much that Fed actually gave Pete the point. Tennis fans want to know why there isn't more personality on the court, look in the mirror.
Sampras is an amazing player. But Roger is just perfect. Or at least, the most perfect tennis player anyone has yet to reach. If only I can hit like that D:
Prime Federer could hit those backhand passes in his sleep. There was nowhere to go for Pete as far as an approach shot, and that included their 2001 Wimbledon match. Pete's serve alone would have been his only hope in the matchup if we're talking S&V Pete. The Sampras that played a lot more from the baseline...well, he ain't going to beat Federer from back there, so you can forget that.
Perhaps, but when they met up Sampras was past his prime.
It also depends what surface and equipment we are talking about. I wouldnt put 2 cents on Federer with both in their prime playing on fast grass with 90s equipment... in fact I would only give it to Fed on clay.
And as for approach shots... well if we are talking S&V, Sampras is backed by one of the best serves in the history of the game. Thats a pretty good approach shot.
Ok, first off lol, its a contradiction in terms to say they were using 90s tech in 2001.
Plus things really began to change round about that time. Courts got slower for one thing.
Second, that year Sampras dropped from 3rd to 10th and the following year he was beaten in Wimbledon in the 2nd round by a total unknown, so I think its safe to say he was far from his prime. Not to mention that it is always limited what one can conclude from one single match.
@alin1975 technically 99 is only 2 years away from 2001 and equipment doesn't change that radically in such short time maybe I'm wrong, I don't want to prove who was better, I'm just saiying, Federer had never passed the second round of wimbly until that year where he got to the wuarters after beaiting sampras who played and AWESOME game, leading to a match of 5 sets. You can't say Sampras wasn't playing well, but Federer wasn't at his max aswell.
Its very hard to say who was better. Certainly, the only case I was making in regards to the concrete info we have was that we do not have enough concrete info. Sampras was going down, Fed was moving up, courts/equipment was changing, and somewhere in between there they met once.
I know who I would put my money on with the conditions I outlined in my first post, and it would be Sampras, but in the end its nothing more than my opinion.
you cant fucking Judge pete sampras's career on this game LMAO.
He's NOWHERE NEAR his prime, in his prime he didnt mindlessly chip and charge all the time, he had a good baseline game, he is just charging because he hasnt got the ground game for roger.
Dont forget he regularly got the better of Agassi who is one of the greatest baseliners EVER.
Sampras prime beats Fed on grass more often than not for me, thats a PRIME samp on PROPER wimbledon grass, clay is fed, hard is 50/50 imo
@nepetro at the end of the video it says 2008 at the Madison Square Garden (aka MSG as the video contains in the title) "NetJets Showdown" dunno what that means other than it's sponsored by whatever the heck net Jets is lol.
So much respect in this video, and I love how old school they played too. I think Pete could at least be in the top 10 in the world the way he played lol
Both guys in their prime wouldve been classic matches,Id still have to give Federer the edge because he has more weapons and versatility, even Fed is an excellent serve and volleyer(Pete's forte)the only adv that Sampras has over Fed is in the serve because of his combination of power and placement,Fed can hit his spots too and with power on ocassion but Pete is clearly better on that department(although not by much in my opinion)nonetheless both are great players and ambassadors.
@julius5551 Sampras had better serve and volleys then Federer much better, but Federer has a better baseline game, although both of them have same weakness, single handed backhand. It would definitely be great rivalry, and also surfaces were a lot faster when Pete played. Wimbledon grass was much faster then today,Rafa wouldnt stand a chance against Roger on grass from the 90s. They are the greatest players ever, but Rafa is also one of the best
@vanny3331 I agree that Sampras's serve was better than Federer's mainly because of his consistency, but when Federer is serving well he is just as efficient,he can place the ball as good as Pete did he just didnt have the power he had,I think where Sampras serve really stands out by comparison is on the second serve which was almost as good as his first offering probably his most dangerous weapon,in a battle of the baseline I think Federer gets the best of Sampras most of the time.
great to watch, best player of the 90's vs best of 00's. still clearly a rigged event...federer gave sampras the second set to give the crowd a match then sampras got hotter than he thought he still could when he pulled ahead during the third set and had to let the younger roger lose for pr reasons. little ironic. all in all still entertaining and you can see sampras could have competed with younger generation for a few more year.
federer was greatest,is greatest and will always be d greatest sportsperson of all time and far better in his game than pele, messi, maradona, sir don bradman.

@mappingtheshit It's called serve and volley. That's his playing style, thats won him 14 grand slams. Players with a big serve all play like that. Especially in his time, like rafter, philipousses, ruzedski, krakicek, ivanicevic, they were all players with a big serve. This was an exhibition match. At the time of this match Sampras had already retired which is probably why he got passed a lot. His serve wasnt as accurate and hard anymore, not to mention his reflexes at the net.

@shmoodlepoofe Sampras beat Federer when he was Sampras was 36 years old. I doubt Federer will be doing the same when he is 36 to whoever is dominating at the time. He'll be at home drinking his cocoa.
@dtz1000 Um dude...the h2h record between sampras and federer is 1-0 to federer at wimby. Sampras retired from tennis when he was 31. If you are referring to sampras beating federer in their charity exhibition matches, those don't count. Sampras was also getting destroyed in his later years with a weak generation. Federer is still top 3 and making SFs and Fs in a stronger generation.
@dtz1000 Does it even matter? What does Henman have to do with anything. Federer was 2 years shy of breaking out and Sampras was in his twilight years, they brushed each other with a "thin film", you can't get any thinner than that: one legend walking into the sunset and another one now beginning to rise on the horizon.
@kinsmon123 Henman went on to beat the same Federer that beat Sampras at Wimbledon. Does that mean Henman is better than Sampras? Or does it mean Sampras was past his peak?
Ok. Federe was at his best at that time and Sampras was not playing Tour at all, he retired. Well ..if you ask me, Sampras is a little better then Federe.
@r500tube impossible. sampras game doesn't even come close to having the dimensions that Fed has. The only reason and I mean ONLY reason Fed is being called greatest of all time is because he has more versatility in his game which allowed him to reach those 4 french open finals and even win one of them. He was the first true all court player than won consistently on multiple surfaces (slams AND tms titles). Sampras was a traditional serve and volleyer, a style that won't work today.
@kinsmon123 One reason Sampras is called greatest player of all time is because it was almost impossible to return his serve. Doesn't matter how good a player you are or how versatile your game is, if you can't return the serve you're going to lose. At his peak Sampras would have destroyed Federer. There would be no way to return his serve, especially on grass.
In Sampras' era the big serve was an add-on something that can get you to championships. In today's game you HAVE to have a big serve to get you as far as the 4th round in a tournament. If Sampras was playing in this era his big serve would have just been one among many. Also many of today's players are capable of neutralizing big serves, just look at Roddick, Isner, Karlovic for instance. And because so many players have big serves, it is movement and versatility that is more important today.
@kinsmon123 Sampras had the best serve of all time because it was unreturnable most of the time and he had this ability to bring out his best serve when he was break point down.
Andy Roddick has a faster serve, but many of his serves are returnable. This is why many players can neutralize that serve. It's not because players of today have suddenly developed superhuman reaction speeds that the previous generation did not possess. I don't think you appreciate how special the Sampras serve was.
holy crap, I didn't know this game was as late as 2008. That's like 10 years after Sampras peaked and he still has game?! Sampras has to be the best tennis player ever!
Sampras peaked before meeting Federer. Would have loved to see them play each other when they both were at their best. I think Sampras would have been better
if sampras was in his prime right here he.... ah i mean his bald head had more hair..and the surface was a... and ...um to much taco bell last night weighed him down and all... he'd win!
you never lose the touch, just the legs. Sampras is the last great to actually play a serve and volley game. Its all a power game now. Federer is the last great technican in tennis and its a shame he's starting to slip. I hate all this big hitting in tennis, its losing its skill factor.
I can listen to arguments saying Federer is greater than Nadal, because their is some truth to that, but the notion that Djoker is greater than Nadal is simply ludicrous
Haha stupid people, Djokovic is the best player ever!! Federer don't have backhend. Nadal always play stupid, fucking top spin forehand, which nowadays everyone know, especially Djokovic how to beat! Sampras had only good serve, and Aggasi had only good return!! Tennis in that period was funny!! Novak has perfect backhand(probably best in world),very good forehand and solid serve! But his main power is brain!! He is more intelligent than every other player!
@djedjor9 Djoker isn't bad, but saying hes the best player ever is just stupid and disrespectful to the actual greats. He might become an all time great, but until then he'll have to prove he is more than a one trick pony and win a major not on hardcourt. Plus if everyone knows how to beat a top spin forehand, How does Nadal manage to win 6 of the last 7 FO and 2 of the last 3 Wimbledons?
@DoctorDoomsday1 If beating Philippoussis, Safin, Roddick, Hewitt, Agassi, Baghdatis, Nadal, Gonzalez, Djokovic, Murray, Soderling, and del Potro to accumulate 16 Grand Slam titles is such an "easy" task, why hasn't anyone else done it!?!?
Might I add...Djokovic, Murray, Soderling, del Potro, and Nadal were in their PRIME when he beat them.
3:44 look like me sometimes, probably i'm gonna be like that everytime when i play roger, i hope i can play a match with him. that would be a valuable lesson
@RichCwm It was an exhibition match to my knowledge, and Federer didn't look like he was giving his all, throughout the match, just wanted to have fun as well... and also please the crowd, and make it a close match, though Sampras was playing good as well for his age...
@stealthpakfa Sampras is a nobody? he has more wimbledon titles than federer. Dont get me wrong im not saying he is better than federer but dont talk shit and say sampras is a nobody.
@TRIGMASTER06 agreed. Also, while Djokovic is "healthy" he has won, despite the several years of "asthma" issues and what not. He has a good return of service and fights for every point (when he is healthy).... That does not mean he has the prowess of Sampras, Federer, or Nadal does. An all around game beats a single advantage, you intuitive know-it-alls...
a great sampras vs a great federer would be equal

Or does it mean Sampras was past his peak?

federer has no weaknesses at all
SharkyssMachine 6 months ago
Why is anybody even fighting right now? Even Sampras said the he believed Federer was the greatest of all time. They're friends.

Sampras was a traditional serve and volleyer, a style that won't work today.
kinsmon123 6 months ago

I don't think you appreciate how special the Sampras serve was.
dtz1000 6 months ago
@kinsmon123 To be fair, Sampras had the greatest serve of all-time. The only one close might be Ivanisevic.

holy crap, I didn't know this game was as late as 2008. That's like 10 years after Sampras peaked and he still has game?! Sampras has to be the best tennis player ever!

you never lose the touch, just the legs.

I'm only a casual fan but Federer is meant to be better than Sampras
RichCwm 8 months ago
@RichCwm It was an exhibition match to my knowledge, and Federer didn't look like he was giving his all, throughout the match, just wanted to have fun as well... and also please the crowd, and make it a close match, though Sampras was playing good as well for his age...

@TRIGMASTER06 LMFAO.
sampras at his peak couldnt beat a teenage federer on wimbledon center court.
sampras is a nobody.
federer ended the sampras legacy.
stealthpakfa 7 months ago
@stealthpakfa Sampras is a nobody? he has more wimbledon titles than federer. Dont get me wrong im not saying he is better than federer but dont talk shit and say sampras is a nobody.
TRIGMASTER06 7 months ago
@TRIGMASTER06 agreed. Also, while Djokovic is "healthy" he has won, despite the several years of "asthma" issues and what not. He has a good return of service and fights for every point (when he is healthy).... That does not mean he has the prowess of Sampras, Federer, or Nadal does. An all around game beats a single advantage, you intuitive know-it-alls...
TheVyress 7 months ago
@stealthpakfa That's a bit of an exaggeration. Even Tim Henman could beat Fed when he was young.
