I love my rottweiler. She has a docked tail. I would compare docking a puppy's tail to circumcising a newborn male. Idk if that's a bad metaphor, but it makes sense to me.
@cathoppe But circumcising a newborn male is wrong on so many moral levels. And don't say health reasons. None stand up to any scrutiny, which is why medical associations don't support it. If docked tail is like circumcision than a docked tail is clearly wrong.
Though the right is yours, I feel tail docking detracts from the elegance of this gorgeous breed. They're so much more gorgeous 100% in tact! I fully intend to get a rott when I have a home that can accommodate one, and I'll only buy from a non-docking breeder. Either way, adorable pup, impressive swimming at such a young age
@mrftothek actually you can. and your dog will get put down. if someone is on ur property withwout your consent, especially looking to do illegal things like b&e, robbery, assaultm etc.. you can't, and you can't get your gun taken away.
@Rarinkaren00.... It may not hurt and they may not know it being done. BUT why doing something that is against their NATURE? That IS STUPID and UNFAIR! why not raising the breeds as they are, WITHOUT trying to make them look like what we think best??? Is it really that hard???
My father use to doc the tails off of rotties when they were little and they never yelped when it happened. So, uh, I don't know what some of you people are talking about if you've never done it or seen it.
It is so silly to say that puppies don't feel when their tails are being docked. From a time an animal is born, it can feel pain. I suppose you need to convince yourself of this nonsense to justify it.
@jbwjessica101 is not, the muscle that controls the tail is at the base of the tail, on their rump, the rest is bones and cartilage (i suck at spelling that one) and if done when they are first born theres nothing there to hurt them, besides, they can hurt them selves by slamming the tail into things its so strong
my pup is a female she is 10 weeks but looks so much smaller! :) Cute tho! How do you make him be so nice, she's good too, but she tries to bite and growls once n a while??
@PDiddyMacilicious In truth if it's not good for a person it usually is not good for Dog either, chlorine is good to clean the water, but it is not good for you, or even fish, it;s a chemical, not that harmful but gives dry skin if your a person that does not take care of your skin or a person with not much of oily skin. Dogs do not produce sweat, but have sweat glands, Im just mentioning this because most likely they don't produce oil in their skin either, groom your dog and use a good shampoo.
To all who might object to that "tail cutting stuff" - when our female yorkie had puppy, he halso had his tail cut. I held him sleeping in my hands and he did not even know about the vet doc cutting it. So all those people talking about "cruelty" - you do not know what you are talking about...
What an adorable puppy just like one of mine was, the others I had were literally on death row when we got them at about age 4 years, take a look at some of mine on stickypatch don't go changing on youtube.Did you notice that Rotties have webbed feet so are great swimmers if they do like the water..All the Best to All Dog lovers Vivienne.
i think its silly to have a rottweiler or dobbie or even boxer dog to have their tail long and there are a few othe rdogs too it just ruins the image of the dog I LOVE ALL dogs and im sure ppl are getting the impression that i only care about what they look like but i dont.the dog doesnt even know its happening its just like a baby getting an injection it hurts for a second and they get over it within a minute
@twittertweetxx 'dog doesnt even know its happening, just like a baby getting an injection; lol its more like circumcision so try telling a kid getting his foreskin chopped off! This will only hurt for a second..snip..snip..chop..chop..half your penis is gone buddy so now you have a little doodle but thats ok cause ive just fixed up your image....just saying!
These days i think its more about preference than anything else as we've commonly associated rotties with short tails over the years.
@Miami18210 I know a lot of people prefer the docked, Its not that I actually give a damn but, I only dock ones tail if its going to work on my grandparents farm otherwise no I dont do it.
I know vets that think its far better to dock a large pup breed becuase of the numbers of tail amputations they cary out due to accidents- which have high mortality rates due to infections and distress. Hi, docking was normally done 2-3 days after birth (when the dew claws are taken off), at the 2nd/3rd notch of the tail. Rarinkaren is right, this is now illegal in uk, You probably couldn't have a better dog with children.Dont choose highly strung dogs i.e. terriers, spaniels etc. I'm on my 3rd Rottie now and i have 9month old twins. I would recommend a male. My boy is 8 now & is my soulmate. His name is Sol. Training & socialization is essential. Enjoy.
@4x12 If you get a Rott from puppy and spend as much time training the humans in the family to speak ¨dog¨ as you spend time training your dog to speak ¨human¨and if you have a peaceful family (no aggressive fights between brothers or screaming at your kids or fights between husband and wife), AND if you have A LOT of time to spend with the dog for at least the first 7 to 12 months, then you will have the BEST companion EVER. Loyal, Calm, Happy, friendly towards strangers, smart and sweet
All these ppl saying they want a rott...well please be informed I have a male rott 15months old who weighs about 100lbs or so. Dog food isnt cheap and he can easily go threw 150lbs of dog food in a month. Im saying this cause im tired of seeing these beatiful dogs in dog pounds cause the owner's couldnt take care of them properly. So please read more on them before you seriously think about getting one.
Thank you for all your GREAT comments, It is NOT cruel to doc a Rotties tail, it is now illegal in the UK, because yes a long time ago they were used as working dogs and pulling carts and the tail got in the way. Today they still have agility with that particular cart pulling race. It in NO WAY hurts the puppy and they do not know it's being done. I would NEVER be CRUEL to any animal, I love him more than anyone could know!!!!!
@Rarinkaren00 so cutting off a part of its body doesn't hurt it, even though it has muscle, bone and nerves in it? Are you really that stupid? I mean c'mon....next you'll be telling us pitbulls with cropped ears is a pleasant experience.....
@Rarinkaren00 I dont beleive it is cruel to doc the tails at all, but i will say that it can affect their health in their later years. My rotty ened up getting a slipped disk and we had to put her down. The sliped disk was caused because of the lack of tail, when she went to wag, her whole ass wagged and messed with her hips. Although I still dont have a problem with it I do think it is something future rot owners should be aware of and think about first. Unbelievable looking dog as well.
@Rarinkaren00 you know tail docking a dogs tail is actually good. the tail is the most sensitive body part of a dog so its prone to many viruses... plus its better to cut it of at a really young age while the tail veins aren't full formed , greatly reduces the pain. btw you have a beautiful rottie, i never go to see mine when it was a puppy :'(
@Rarinkaren00 i agree and about the tail cutting thats still legal in my country and it more safe with it cuted cause a grown one has a heavy tail and its not soo fun getting hit with it and also this help them to be more agile and they dont risk getting a foot on theyre tail and i have one and its lovely u cant go anywhere without to play with him ^^
@Rarinkaren00 Tail docking 100% does hurt the puppy. Even a puppy has a fully developed nervous system. Unless the puppy is sedated or numbed, it feels all the pain of losing a limb. Im suprised to see you say otherwise lol. There is even medical evidence to prove the dog goes through pain. To put a dog through that purely for the owners vanity is selfish. Despite that, still looks like an awesome, happy little dog and im sure he's long forgot about losing his tail.
@Rarinkaren00 We also had 2 rottweilers with a doc-tail...it's not cruel at all. Don't you love it when that little thingy is waving so full of enthousiasm when you get home!!! I have a shephard-rottweiler mix now...with a normal tail. My parents still have a rottweiler :) great dogs! Very loyal.
@Rarinkaren00 You do know losing a tail to a dog is almost the same as a person losing his ability to speak? "It in no way hurts the puppy and they don't know its being done?" Are you seriously so naive you think the dog doesn't feel pain after its tail is cut off? seriously? Why do you think docking tails is banned in most countries in EU.. because it's cruel! And why in the hell would you cut off a dogs tail, because it makes it look better? What a fucked up world...
wow some of you probably only have had one rott, a lot of them are born with no tail or depending on the pair half will have a tail while half will have little to no tail... its amazing how even veterinarians don't know this about rotts( should of seen the guys face when my brother took his litter to the vet...when he saw no blood on the tail or exposed bone from docking wtfomgbbq!)
@cossi1709 Like many breeds, rottweilers usually have their tails docked, or cut off, for aesthetic reasons. Some people think it's cruel, but from what I understand it's usually done by restricting blood flow to the tail when they are just newborn and they don't feel a thing.
