Such a beautiful song... So calm and somehow bittersweet / melancholic. I watched White Squall a few days ago for the 3rd time and loved it again! This song goes perfectly with it!
In White Squall, does anyone know if the dolphin that got killed by Frank actually survived during film production? I've been wondering about that ever since I saw the movie yesterday.
Parts of White squall was filmed in St.Vincent & the Grenadines . Lots of stories like the Albatross, sailors whose vessels got caught in White squalls and never returned...A white squall is no joke, it comes between the rain storms and when it decends on you, you just have to let the boat run with it, sometimes you are lucky,,sometimes you're not...but the ocean is vast and beautiful and many lives
will be lost...RIP to all the sailors lost at sea.....Gone but not forgotten,

.. this heart touching song really takes me around the cape of Horn and feel rolling of the sea. Will I survive this voyage to Valparaiso!Ghost are flying over me and squalls are blowing and make me chill . Through the moonlight see tips of icebergs.True love is waiting without knowing I passing through historical grave yard of committed men.Only hope is stars are bright and the moon is not masked by clouds so fear goes down until sun comes at dawn..
@santaabeywickrama - your comment is beautiful - you must be a poet. I've always loved this song - but then again I pretty much love anything Sting does. Did you ever see "White Squall"? I think the association with this brilliant film makes this track even more poignant than it already is. I wish you peace and only calm seas from now on.
@candipill - yet you are the angel at the cape of good-hope! I fear not as I can see you standing among scattered ghostly ice mounds wishing me peace and calm sea! I can survive violent sea understanding her nature when disturbed but I know not how to survive with calm and quite buccaneers who turn murderous abruptly behind me... ( Sting has opened a path to see the vivid nature of the life and composer must be praised too.)
@santaabeywickrama - the Cape of Good Hope is a beautiful city, my favourite out of all the cities I have ever lived in or visited. I live on the opposite coast, which is not too bad either. Whatever it is that you are going through - those mutinous pirates that you refer to, be of good courage. Sometimes the only way we can overcome our demons is by standing up and turning around to face them head on and when we do that we see that they arent as tall, and big as we thought.
This song has a spiritual nature about it. It embraces the beauty, danger, hardship, wonder and majesty of the worlds oceans, and ports of call which draw ships in to them. Like a beautiful woman draws the heart of a man. Valparaiso is one of those mystical places very possible a part of our collective unconscious yearning for a hero's journey. Wonderful job Sting!!
@chakrachaser I spent a few weeks in Valpariaso in 1988 and whenever I hear this song I see myself walking in the streets of the city. Riding in a very decorative bus to Vina Del Mar and drinking bottles of 'Cato Negro'. Thanks Mr Sumner for another great piece of music
@Bouah01 Love to hear about your experiences after all that is part of the magic of the internet. People from all over the world can now share thoughts, ideas, experiences, and relate, debate this great adventure of life:) a true hero's journey! Thank you for your thoughts, and real life experience!
@sementalporteno Sting always had a special connection to Chile... He dedicated several songs to Chile. by the way, he'll be giving a concert in Viña del Mar (neighbour city of Valparaiso to the ones who don't know it) next week! 25th of Feb 2011... don't miss it!
My great grandfather left his young wife and 1 year old son at home in Sheffield, England in july 1914. He sailed around the Cape Horn to Valparaiso where they docked before engaging the enemy. On 1 november 1914, he was lost along with 1500 British sailors at the Battle of Coronel off the Chilean coast. This is a very moving and true story x
no, it's based on a ship that crashed that took the lives of the captain's wife, it's crew in a freak storm known as a White Squall...according to the sailors the white squall was a myth
@LightDragon74 Thank you very much. Then there is a potential for a giant art work like Titanic! Environmental diversity may add more superiority for such work. Why this was not noticed to Chritchtan! We hope somebody will do it! If it is mixed with Argentine/Chilean culture there would be tremendous success! Cap Horn named after the city Hoorn in Netherlands so the writer has enormous course show vivid creativity!
@LightDragon74 -Thank you so much. I really enjoy the song with a feeling that I cant express! A great work! Let the crew of ill fated Albatross be known to the world in propound manner for contributing the history!

this reminds me of myself, crying on my bed. the day after i heard my best friend couldn't hang out with me anymore, i broke down. i went to my room, and turned this song on. can't remember i've ever cried harder, but even when she's gone, i still love her. i always will.
@im8teennow Not at all. It's a very romantic song in the tradition of Rime of the Ancient Mariner / wife waiting for her husband to return from the sea. So move out to the east/west coast and find yourself a fisherman/woman. : )
@im8teennow no, i find it romantic too. i associate it with a girl which i loved.. when i first heard this song. now tbh i forgot the girl but the feeling remained.
Wild Wild Sea is the track you're probably thinking of from Soul Cages. Have you noticed how Sting tends to work in cycles i.e., every few years he goes into a "moody ocean" phase, followed by a "danceable shiny pop" period, and then back to what he's currently doing with the "Winter" record. I love it. He'll never get bored, and neither will we...DB
'Wild Wild Sea' is a great example but this song just reminds me of the general "feel" of the whole album (a moody ocean kind of feel as you said before) In a way it also reminds me of 'Island of Souls' (the Northumbrian Pipes)
P.S. So true what you said, he does work in cycles!
I hope he stays in the 'moody ocean' phase for just a bit longer though. Even though I'm sure it won't happen, I would love it if he made another album like 'The Soul Cages'
Wasn't the "Soul Cages" written shortly after his father's death? I think "Nothing Like the Sun" was a response to the death of his mother, and that is another of his most satisfying, incredible records. Oh, and going back to Synchronicity: remember what that was a response to? (hint: grief over ______?) I hate to say it, but it seems that the deepest Sting music seems to arise from the ashes of grief, loss, pain...like a lot of the best art. Wish it could be otherwise, but...DB
I too have alot of respect for others' opinion. But if this song is so so for certain, I'm just wondering what it takes to impress those people. This is a GREAT song.
Well, it's your opinion and you have a right to have one... but I'd keep it quiet 'cause people may laugh at you - this song is AMAZING piece of art!!!
I'm not knocking your opinion of this song; to each their own. It's just that I've personally been "round the Cape Horn to Valparaiso", and am of the opinion that this song does not do the city justice. Take it for what it's worth. I listened to it again, and I still didn't enjoy the jarring tempo during some portions, or the lack of a focus on either vocals or music. Nor did I find the lyrics particularly enlightening, or poignant. So, my initial impression still stands.
well, at least there's one other soul with a heart drawn to the sea. me 2. how will she know the devils i've seen ? she'll know, because she's not a regular kind of girl. she's my sailboat where i live... in the ocean.....moving... swimming.... never comming home....see you in the world...by the water......
anyone know if there's a live version or a cover of this? I LOVE this but I'd love to hear another version.

Very moving song. Maybe because I'm from a seafaring nation - the Maldives :)
I liked the movie White Squall in which the song appeared.
