  • To everyone bitching about this guy's tone, you're missing the real problem. He hasn't mic'd the amp up at all for this video, the audio is coming from the camera. So it's a shitty mic, placed in the middle of the room, probably with shit in between it and the amp. Get over it.

Oh, by the way, I bought the Ice 9 today to go with my AC30C2, and it's fucking killer.

  • i have the saturator and this video doesnt do it justice. there is a great sweet spot to that pedal and he's far from it. its such a versatile pedal with such a crystal clear overdrive. the more button is great when you wanna play a song like satch boogie, and take it off to play some zeppelin or clapton

  • Nice job!

  • thank you for this video it is very helpfull. i guess i will just have to buy both pedals.

  • that helpme a lot,thanks, now i want bhot

  • What cable is that between them???? I NEED those, they could save so much pedalbaord space!

  • i am totally envious of all that guitar gear

  • Thanks for sharing! Good demo. most critiques posted missed the point that the demo was a comparison of one relative to the other. Im getting the Ice 9 thanks to this.....

  • You could just back the satchurator down & get over drive tones. I don't like either. But dude, your tone. You've got a guitar & great amps, you got to work on your tone. The entire video sounded like your were playing under a blanket. It might have sounded great in the room, but you need to get a SM57 & mike up a cab.

  • @MrUltraworld He is recording inside his closet...so stop complaining

  • @MrUltraworld if you want a good guitar mike: Sennheiser E906 or AKG C414

  • Sorry man, but as a "Tone King" you should really live up to your nickname.

Why not using a Fender Twin Reverb which is probably the best "blank canvas" to demonstrate a pedal??? Specially an overdrive or distortion pedal!!

Having tons of amps you choose the worst of the worst to do pedal reviews.

Please, man. Use a GOOD clean sound! A Twin Reverb will be the best.

Just saying... I kinda like your stuff.

  • @surfco dude, vai uses a carvin

  • I'm gonna get both of them!!!! Cause I play both metal and rock. Combined with a Switch Blade from Electro Harmonix to switch between the two. Cool sounds in any rehearsal studio I'm gonna get into.

HEY TONE KING! REALLY HELPFUL SHOOT-OUT! THX A LOT!!!

  • why would you waist time with a SHOOTOUT using an OVERDRIVE against a HIGHGAIN pedal at all...apples and oranges...I came looking to hear the ICE 9 push the SATCHURATOR a little harder...

  • I really didn't mind the carvin sound. I know what it will do with mine. But I wanted to see both units RUNNING ON side by side. Im thinking of adding the Overdrive along side by side with my Satchurator. So I was hoping to hear them work together. But...I'll just use my imagination. ;p)

  • This guy's demo's are the worst. He cant' EQ an amp or play worth a damn.

Why would you have chorus on your clean sound in a drive pedal shoot out.

  • thanks for you service informing guitar players about pedals. The caustic comments are reflective of the state of peoples attitudes and upbringing today. The day care generation speaks.

  • i love it

  • clean tone really sucks

  • He "fig-yid"?!

  • whats goin on with your clean sound for a start?

and take it off the neck pickup when you are playing chords please!

  • i wonder how they would sound toghether... i own a fullbore metal that i play through a blackstar ht 5 and i would like to know if i can fatten the thin sounding distortion that come out of it... anyone tryied an overdrive over a distortion and can tell me if i can get a better sound?

  • you are an assholl !

  • @amine2400 Perfect troll.

  • @lmsjr The Ice9 is more for Sustain... and the Vox is obiously for distortion... cause Mr. Joe likes feedback and he uses ice9 for that purpose thats why it has no distortion like the vox

  • LONG LIVE THE TONE KING!

  • Did you used Chorus?

  • i just got a satchurator they are awsome pedals

if you wnat to rock out and get good solos with good distrotio you got to get the satchurator

  • I've got an Ice9 and I mainly use it for boosting. I also think it sounds really nice if you use it on the clean channel with a delay.

  • I had the Satchurator and got rid of it........it was a lot of zzzzzzzzzz and not a lot of body.

  • @GuillermoSmyser mee too! no body at all... ice 9 is what replaced mine... much happier with it... feels way more like tube amp overdrive... yippee!

  • Does anybody know how does it sound with Fender hot rod? I mean the satchurator

  • just wondering is the volume on the ice 9 broader than the satchurator? i have the satchurator, not much effect volume, so i am selling it... i would buy the ice 9 if its louder than the satchurator... please let me know if this is what im hearing...

  • @coldandhomeless you probably wont get the same sound. dont sell it though, chances are if your not getting the volume you want, you should also use an overdrive pedal to go with it, but dont use alot of gain on the over drive, just use volume and tone. it should bring out the effects more.

  • @zomgitzakitteh i traded the satchurator for an ice 9 and it is the best pedal ever! only needs to be at 9 oclock to match the clean volume... all i wanted was a sound that was the same volume with one stomp... ice 9 with a tube screamer in front of it is pure bliss for me... blast the gain and tone, no bass, and 9-10 oclock for volume in modern mode gives me basically 4 channels for clean to blistering... running it into a 1972 randall alpha-hybrid 100w head... any other pedal makes it floppy..

  • first i got the satchurator and i really liked the way it sounded, for me its like a new flavor compared to those other distortion pedals out there, plus the more button makes my life a lot easier by not always having to go lean down and turn the gain knob whenever more gain is needed.a few days later,i bought the Ice 9 for the same reason.

  • He explained it already: he sets up everything at half, all the time, instead of tweaking to get good sounds. He thinks this reflects the real character of the pedals and amps. At least he's generous.

  • Way better the Ice 9

  • i have both of these pedal... they actually do sound really good, but hear they sound shit!

  • haha 0:38, thought the flag banner said "the tode lounge"

  • The clean sound have to much... Mmm... bass, or I don't know but forever ¡Satchurator!

  • Way 2 much bass my friend. Whats with the low volume on your clean signal anyways? If anything your clean signal should be nice and loud with OD and Distortion set on unity with Amp volume. Also your clean sound had 2 much bass but you had to turn your tone down on your Satchurator to make it sound even worse. Nobody in their right minds needs that much Bass in their signal

  • Just a suggestion...Usually in your demos you tend to have the gain between half way and full. I think it would help viewers appreciate the capabilities of each pedal if you could explore the full range of gain/volume. Start from zero and work your way up. Not everybody is a "gainiac", and as you rightly said, many people want an overdrive to boost their amplifier's natural tone or provide a crunchy bite rather that use as a gain machine...

  • A fellow band member has the satchurator. Very different beast. While it sounds great, I still like my ice9 better.

  • I personally own the Ice9 and use it on ch 1 of a Vox ac50 (my clean channel) which is quite heavily overdriven to start. This pedal is killer.

  • well the satchurator sounded really muddy, but that's because you got a phaser behind it. The Ice 9 sounds really clean and doesn't have that phaser sound behind it

  • TOO MUCH BASS ON THE CLEAN!!!!!

  • TTK, putting the Ice 9 after the Satchurator will make for a sweet volume boost for solos when using the Satchurator for a high gain setting

  • Sorry man - your clean tone is nasty - sounds like someone has shoved your amp down the toilet and then flushed it - I am sure these pedals sound great - but not on this demo.

  • OMG GASP!!!!! the distortion pedal is a distortion pedal and the overdrive pedal is an overdrive!!!!!! i never would have guessed......

  • thanks ToneKing for the vid! I found a Satchurator used at my local store for $70. With the gain backed off I'm really enjoying the non-too-brutal dirty tones! Tweaking on this unit is vital!! :-) For more dirt I switch to my Fat Sandwich. Good stuff! :-)

  • make your own demos if this is not to your liking people instead of putting him

    down by making stupid comments..

    he is trying to help..

just bought the time machine and satchurator by the way ,and they both rock..!!

    keep on rockin dude....;););)salute..

  • @hansebeddari The problem with most people making their own demos is that most people just don't have the funds to do such a thing.

  • This is a really bad tone demo!

  • Bro, the clean sound in this vid sounds like absolute SHITE. I appreciate what you do for us all who can't afford to buy and demo all this stuff, but PLEASE try to EQ the clean/original tone to something that actually sounds decent. With everything you got, I can't believe you demo like this . . .

  • @astro2069 Mate, go Hi Def on the video to vastly improve sound...

  • @mainIevent Will do, hooking up the Bose phones and loaded to 720p, we'll see . . .

  • @astro2069 Sorry bro, clean tone still sounded like crap, despite 720p HD, high quality headphones ... clean tone was too dull and lifeless, which REALLY hurt the ICE 9 demonstration ... however a bad setup still doesn't mean that these pedals suck. They are good units. Unfortunately, the one Satchurator I've tried for myself was a bit screwed up. One of these days I'll probably buy both, but it'll be a while before that happens.

  • @astro2069

Oh well, the "saturated" sound doesn't sound much better either. Must be the horrible medium of the web for such purposes, but in general... this kind of modern "crunchy" is 20% guitar and 80% sewing machine. Most of the time we here hhhsssshhhhhhh and that's it, unfortunately.

  • @astro2069 The king makes great video's but I think he is not running a mic to the cabinet. You could eq all day and it is not going to help the situation. I love the king I think he has a great thing going. If you can make better videos my friend please do so so I can subscribe to your channel. It is all in love tho, lets help each other out and not be so critical.

    peace

  • @astro2069 I disagree and agree at the same time... IMHO the clean tone was too rich and complex to serve as a demo base sound. At 1:40-ish the clean tone sounds chorusy, and drips harmonics. With a base sound like

that, I could make any shitty soapbox homemade pedal sound like a super hot and thick tube overdrive. I mean,

there is a lot of body from which scoop. I think the "opposite" you said: The demo almost lost its purpose, not

because the clean tone is bad, but because it is "too good"!

  • @astro2069 You can offer constructive criticism without being an asshole.

  • for someone who calls them self the 'Tone King' ya tone if fucking terrible so flat and muffled

  • Was there some kind of flanger engaged during this vid?? It sure sounded like it.

  • I like your video's but I find myself fast forwarding them to hear the things you are sharing. If you limited the talk they would be much more pallatable.

  • LONG LIVE THE TONE KING!!!

  • Playing the OD pedal on the clean channel is useless... Shootout fail

  • @thedddemon That's how I get my tone. I'm using a SS though..

  • @thedddemon Why is using an OD on the clean channel of an amp useless?

  • @guitarrhythymfool is that a serious question?

  • @ibanezdude2000 Actually yes.

An overdrive pedal was not originally designed to do what most people use it for these days, i.e. boosting the dirt channel of an amp, but instead was originally used as an emulation of natural tube overdrive. That's why overdrive pedals have a lot of gain on tap.

One of the classic sounds was SRV playing the clean channel of a Fender amp with a TS to give him his distortion. One of my favorite sounds is a Fulldrive 2 on my friend's Marshall 18watt when its clean.

  • Comment removed

  • hes got either a phaser or flanger on so u cant tell

  • This would be 10 times better if you miced your amp, or if you did mic your amp get a better mic or learn how to record it better. but I liked the video a lot

  • so which one is nice....????

  • satch = distortion pedal

    ice 9 = Overdrive

  • Man, the JMD is dark sounding for a Marshall.

  • is satch using the ice 9 on his new album?

  • @GuitarAriaFreak1010

    He'll be using both.

He uses all of his pedals, just different ones per sections, or per songs.

  • toneking!! can u do a demo of the sahurator and using an overdrive pedal as a lead boost??? a ts9 perhaps?

  • Tone King...I'm an absolutely hopeless Satriani fan. I love his style & mostly his sound. Thanks for the great demos. I'm seeing both of these badass boxes in my future. \m/

  • only problem is that this guy only playing rythms, so you can't really hear the nice tone of the satchurator when you are playing a solo ;)

  • dude it sounds like your vocal mic and the amp mic are phasing each other out? and thats causing the flanging effect. it sounds bad. you should mute the mic track when the amp mic is going. hard to tell how the pedal sounds through all hte mush.

  • Such a lark here w the ubergain heads everywhere. I remember when this guy demo'd the Satchurator and had no idea what the pad switch was for.. TK makes everything really buzzy as the amps are just not right for these boxes. Pedals like more clean channel tube so they can push them, the vol levels are so down here which indicates the amps are clipping already. Dig the Carvin, been using their guitars for a long time, great build and quality. I take all youtube pedal demos w a grain of salt.

  • The DS works best w tone on 9-10:00 like Joe uses it and gain about 3;00 using the More to gain it up if needed. Nice pedal, articulate, troubling here is the vol which indicates the amps are very up as I find the output on this pedal to be about 1;30 unity, this is effecting the fuzz out tone. The OD I am sure is really good and can get dark w punch like I prefer the gain level seems very versitle. The Vox JS line are all really great pedals, although youtube never really does anything justice.

  • You were so close! Why didn't you tryem together!

  • ive always been an overdrive kinda guy,bc with the right dialing you can sometimes get a harsh od thats sounds like a mid-level dist. i also think od sounds alot cleaner

  • uhu! nice review. i like my satchurator with the tone in 9, but depend too the Eq of his own clean channel and the amp too. Very cool stuff here.

  • ice drive has more warmth to it, and good mids+low end. Satchurator more for modern leads, more modern type of music. Ice drive more for rhythm/crunch and vintage lead style of playing. Both are good at what they do. Complements each other, for different styles of music. Usually you need both distortion and overdrive pedals in your collection to handle different music. Get both!

  • @oysterlicker Agreed, by far.

Ice 9= for laid back Dist, meaning TRUE GRAIN. Looking to enjoy every clip of drive? there's your pedal.

The Satchurator takes no prisoners. Looking to re-enact the G3 live in Denver? There you go!

  • for f(*&)&*& sake, one is an OVERDRIVE the other a HIGH GAIN.

Get them both they are for DIFFERENT USES!!!

The VOX pedals are all great and will adapt to the best and cheapest of rigs, (except for a tiny little one speaker solid state, I mean come on.) An OD was meant to push and clip a tube circuit not act like a gain box.

Listen to what Joe does with them. His tone is killer, through clean tube amps. He does not sound tinny and fizzy.

  • @CarvinTone Unity gain on the Satchurator is like almost 1:00 these are NOT pushing the amp like they should to get a more ballsier heavy tone.

  • both seem to work as advertised. The satchurater saturates and the ice9 overdrives. I'm not much of a distortion or overdrive pedal user . Pretty good review though.

  • Ice 9 for me TK! Both pretty good and cool sounding... but there's a dark growl coming from the Ice 9 that I just can't get enough of. Cheers!

  • I got The Satchurator, and it doensn't work too well on the Bugera 6262. It needs a total clean channel just like Joe has it with the JSX. I set my satchurator just like the vid and it sounds pretty good. The Ice 9 on the other hand has a nice vintage "marshall " tone in my opinion. Think I'm gonna get the Ice 9 great review Tone King as always ROCK ON

  • So when exactly is the Ice 9 gonna be released in the U.S? I still can't find it.

  • Boths pedals are cool !!!!!! thnx a lot !!!!!

  • I really liked the Red Satcgurator better. I wonder what it would have sounded like if you used the ICE OD to Boost the Satchurator even more than the boost on it already does? Only the Tone King will know for sure. LOL I really want to like the Vox ICE OD but the Fulltone OCD blows it out of the water. IMO. I really like the tone of the MXR Zakk Wylde OD myself. Great shootout.

  • Gainiac... LOL i once played with a rocktron gainiac rack amp... those are awesome do you have any rocktron laying around there?

  • you have chorus on.

  • Wow Ive heard both these pedals many times and liked them...untill this vid. I started to like them better once the gain was rolled back at the end. TTK I love your vids, but I guess Im not into the metal stratosphere ultra hi gain sound as you are. And with YT and video compression it made both pedals sound extreamly cold and fizzy.

  • @wwit63 I tried a Satchurator a little while back, totally intending to buy it even before I did. I wasn't too impressed ... I loved it from many online demos, but this one at the store wasn't quite what I expected. I'm wondering if it was a bad unit. It was reacting more like a Fuzz, the Peavey Vypyr was coping a better Satch tone than the Satchurator was at any setting .. anyone experience this before?

  • first one sounded more err treble then the second

  • @kaleluk31 Did ou mean the first one sounded more terrible than the second?

If so i'de have to agree.

  • @STINKFINGER33 well no i meant treble as in a guitar setting.

ok dint sound as good but terrible is a bit harsh lol

if you think second was better, we are in agreement

  • I think you have chorus on your amp; at least that's what it sounds like. Good demo though! \m/

  • Another great one from TTK! Keep 'em coming! Got my TTK picks recently too. Very cool. Thanks TTK!
