clauddytta Thank you (gracias?) 4 posting. The Shirt Mr. Knopfler wore at 1:45 (not the song) reminds me of a Black and White polka Skirt I had when I was much younger/Slimmer. I also had a leopard/wild-animal print jump/boiler suit like the shirt + HEADband Mark-puppet-lookalike wore in 'Calling Elvis'. My mum made them for me, she was not a musician though.

from what i can tell mark knopfler is far from religious which leads me to believe this is not a song reaching out to lost souls searching for faith but is a humourous look at the lengths some people go to in order to not endure an eternity of flames, horns and pitch forks. giving their last cents to a well performed man with a diamond ring (he has enough money, maybe he can pay the heating bill). Quite humourous with their lyrics at times, just another great example of their cleverness.

Yes, it's a superbly clever song. Note how the beautiful "heavenly" sound of the music doubly underlines the ironic lyrics. A poor guy in America giving all his money to a rich evangelist in order to "save the little children in a poor country". The fat cat evangelist with the diamond ring doesn't suffer in the slightest.

You realise this song is ironic, don't you? The song is about a poor misguided "believer" who gives all his money to an evangelical minister who wears "a diamond ring" in the belief he will get his ticket to heaven.
