I used to have a Bing Crosby collection of songs called "Bing - A Musical Autobiography" He mentions on the record that when he recorded this, Les Paul only used a Gibson four string acoustical guitar. It was probably the most popular song of 1945, coinciding with the GI's from WWII. It has the same feeling for that generation as "Tie A Yellow Ribbon Round the Oak Tree" did for returning Vietnam veterans.
1945. World War II is winding down-I imagine all the war weary men and women, far from home and missing their significant others, listening to this song. What emoticons it must have welled up in them!
Being from that generation, I especially like Bing's rendition of this song with Les Paul. It's yummy. Thanx, der Rosen Kavalier - and excellent operetta, btw.
this is the first time i've heard this song, i am twenty years old. music is not made with the same sensibilities today as when this song was written and recorded. its beautiful, exotic, and familiar all at the same time. thank you
never considered les paul to be an amazing player, but it's undeniable that modern music would be totally different if he hadn't been around, not half as advanced as it is now
I heard this song from Ken Burns' WWII documentary, "The War". I immediately felt in love with this song. What a great song sung by a great performer! Thank you for posting.
Les Paul was much better than Chuck Berry and Jimi Hendrix (and thats not knocking Jimi by the way). Les learned all sorts of different styles of music and playing and recording techniques way before everybody else. By playing alongside the best musicians at the time, Les learned and then became the benchmark that all guitarists afterwards wanted to be.
I disagree with Mr Mercury. Les Paul wasn't a particularly strong guitarist - certainly not as impressive as Django Reinhardt (who Paul and Hendrix claimed as a main influence) or Frank Zappa (who was easily a better and more diverse guitarist than any of them). Paul was inventive, though, in the same way that Hendrix had feeling, and shouldn't be remembered for his guitar playing when recording studios owe so much to him.
Les Paul why dont people know about him. He had more hits than Michael Jackson he invented multi track recording and he invented the solid body guitar. Yet more prople will cry for M.Jackson than ever will for Les Paul. With out hime there would not be beatles and M.Jackson would not have bin any good.
They don't make songs like this anymore. Love it.

Really too slow, but Les Paul's guitar and Bing's voice make the leisurely pace worth it.

One of the best recordings of that or anytime. I love that Bing gives Les the space to solo so beautifully too. Thanks for the video!

Was Les Paul a better guitar player than Chuck Berry, or Jimi Hendrix, or just a better innovator?
