Too bad Elgin could never get a presidential candidate to come here now. Wouldn't be safe. Heck, it's not safe for regular people let alone a candidate.
The Spiess building was right across the street from where the Parks Dept Offices are now (formerly Woolworths). I remember being upset that all the crowds interrupted my kickball game at Lincoln School. I also recall Elgin voting overwhelmingly for Nixon.
You're welcome, TLJ. Actually you might have known my aunt. She went to Elgin High about the same time you must have. Did you know Tom Shales when he was there?
JFK would be 90 years old in May, which puts the time of 1960 in perspective. We always see JFK as a young man, yet he was in his mid 40s in the early 1960s.. I guess we see him young for a President, but for a man he was middle aged. So he being 90 now would not be too much of a shock, but to me it is still surprising.
I agree, minson20. I grew up there and each time I return to visit my family, something else is gone. Not only the historical landmarks, but the countryside as well.
Thanks for the comments. I guess I don't check here that often. I also have some footage of Nixon that my uncle took in Rockford. Not uploaded yet though.
what a shame. 6 months ago the store was still there? Well that is a great historical record you have. If you made a copy of that film, the Kennedy library would probably put the copy in its records. Take care.
This is very interesting. Looks like an old 8mm home movie taken at a campaign stop. Is that store still there where Kennedy is talking in front of. Says Company.

I was, like, two years old, if that at the time this film was shot.
My family lived on Hinsdell Pl. then, near downtown.

@bluewank That's cause elgin is full of idiots with no vision which is why this town is a social and cultural wasteland.

I don't know the street address, but if you recall where the Spiess Department store on Grove Ave. was, it was right there in front of it.

Elgin? Who knew? Fantastic. (I used to live in Batavia). Amazing that we still can't get him out of our collective minds. Thanks for the clip.

That store, Joseph Spiess Co. was torn down about 6 months ago to make way for some condos. This downtown area is nothing like it was back in 1960.
