I had the same with my integra and i ended up shooting a piston through the block but my car had too much power for the old engine block

Rod bearings went. Replaced them, but the crank was too far gone and ate the new bearings. Ended up throwing a rod.

Probably you have a connecting rod bearing too loose or crankshaft metals and bearings stucked.

when you hear something like that, STOP the engine, get a mechanic, DON'T open it up on startup to see if it goes away.

The problem was a bad rod bearing. Resulted in the crank being chewed up which in turn chewed up the new rod bearings and sent a rod through the block.. :(
shouldn't have run it with the engine sounding like that. had a dsm that did that, but shut it down and rebuilt before requiring an entire new block.
