@phototristan If I remember rightly, the bearskins are a "trophy" after the Guards Regiments defeated the French Guards and Grenadiers in the Napoleonic wars. The French wore these bearskins, so as a sign of victory the Guards adopted them.
nope they dont have to amrch at all, marching is so they can stretch their legs... and they only do 2 hours of guard duty and they get a 4 hour break. inbetween. 2 hours on 4 hours off.
@pcjoel999 yea for the foot gaurds its every 15 minutes, in the cav its supposed to be every 15 minutes but its left down to soldiers descretion, no one really enforces it. they can either patrol or just stand their for the full two hours.
ofcourse walking meant more polishing lol so alot of of the trooeprs used to walk as little as possible in the boots.
wow some people have no clue!!! how many people do you know who are trusted to carry a weapon out side the most powerfull women in the worlds home.???? that is by far one of the best jobs in the world,, the very best job is household cavelry, those boys are the sovreigns personal escort. they life all year round in the centre of london in the richest part, their back yard is the most famous park. and they ride their horses on the worlds most exclusive bridal path. lmao worse job int he world
They ARE paid according to their rank. His job is as a soldier in the British Army, serving in the Grenadier Guards. Members of this regiment have been killed fighting in the current conflicts. When not on tour they are posted on Public Duties and have the honour of guarding the Royal Residences and the Tower Of London. They are not mere ceremonial eye candy, they are soldiers who are guarding something. Why do you think he carries a modern weapon?
the word grenadier is french the actual grendier regiment is brittish, same goes for the word seargant how ever thats spealt. we coppied the french by making our regiment of grendiers. they just looked cool on the battlefield :) so we thought we would have some
plus if ou look at the button spacing on the tunic, ther're in sets of ones signifying that the greadiers are the youngest gaurds in the household division (I think)
it signifies them as the first regiment of foot guards not the youngest. they are the senior regiment of infantry. the Welsh Guards are the youngest regiment in the Household Division
its scots guards as the oldest at 1642 , then king's dragoon guards(lifeguards) at 1644, the life guards (royal dragoonguards) accompanied king chares from exile for the restoration, official age is from 1661. the life guards are reffered to as the most senior regiment not the oldest., then its the coldstream at 1650 then grenadier guards at 1656, then irish guards in 1900, and whelsh in 1915. im not sure if the irish and welsh guards is exacly correct, last two might be older check it out :)
if im not mistaken order of age in terms of the houshold division guards its - coldstream, lifeguards, blues and royals, grenadiers scots irish, whelsh, its been a while since i was in so i could have on or two back to front.. the lifgaurds are over 350 years old i know the coldstream are 350-400 years grendiers are something like 300+ or so, and the rest are less than 300. i dont the know exact ages of the top of my hat but you can google the history of the regiments which is very interesting.
Lol coldstream and grenediars, you guys r never gunna back down to each other lol! its good though, healthy competition! both Very well disciplined Units! weather stood on guard in london or fightin on the frontline in afghan!
Just liek to say good luck to Coldstream i understand u guys r due to deploy on herrick?
This is a Grenadier Guard, although the white plume looks dark. The 5 Foot Regiments of the Household Division, the Grenadier, Coldstream, Scots, Irish & Welsh Guards do this duty at the British Royal Palaces as well as the Tower of London. However, over the years other regiments have been honoured to mount guard on occaision. Including the Gurkahs, the RAF and others.
I was there in April and there was a different kind of guard in that booth you can see in this video. A tourist must have crossed that little barrier because all of a sudden he yelled "En Guard!", and got in a stance. It was funny becuase those tourists were so emarassed.
Why do they wear this hats? What's the story behind them?

hes not a grenadier guard hes a scots guard
grenadiers have a white plume on their bearskin to remind them of cowardice in face of the enemy.when all the officers ran away during a battle
FlyingScotsmanNo1 3 years ago
I can see a white plume in his bearskin though, on his left side?
01MarchHare 3 years ago
hes a grenadier!
the plume is on the left because back in the 1800's they used to parade on the left!
scots have no plume beacause they parade in the middle!
coldstreamers have a plume on the right hence why they have a plume on the right!
im a coldstreamer myself
part of 7 coy!
