They made a version of this show without the blackface makeup called Music Music Music....it was huge flop. The only thing that can be concluded is that the blackface somehow made this corny rubbish hugely appealing to viewers. God, even TV stations in the American Deep South in the 60s wouldn't have shown this. Just...just terrible, however good the singing and dancing is on a artistic level.

Man, it amazes how much white people really hate black people. It appalls me how much they dehumanized, demeaned, and degraded black people for no apparent reason (except for a source of entertainment). When I look at some of the rap videos that I see today it reminds me of similar minstrel shows.
On a more humorous note - I can remember just before colour television was introduced to the UK many shops displayed a list of programmes due to be broadcast in colour - one of them being the 'Black and White Minstrel Show'. All the cast were white; I often wonder what would have happened if a black male singer had joined? At the time it was just harmless fun with no intention to offend, obviously the passing of the years may cause it to be viewed somewhat differently.
I've just popped in after a lengthy absence, and find a strange alien language being uttered by 'freeweights101'. Sorry, but I won't waste my time trying to decipher this.

Those of you who find this offensive are not living in the world I come from unfortunately. This was no more than good enjoyable entertainment back then and my grandparents went to see these shows live in London on many occasions. They were not racist and happen to be very caring, people who would do anything for anyone, no matter what their colour or race they were.

I had to do a project on Minstrel Shows. Originally they were to raciest. The people that wrote them were writing about problems they had in their life, but hiding it by blackening their faces and making it into a comedy show. They did not start being aimed at being actually raciest until the start of the Civil War, after Stowe's book, Uncle Tom's Cabin, was published.
This was dated and anachronistic then. To think this was contemporary with the Rolling Stones or the emerging hippy movement is frankly shocking. The only people who would have liked this back then would have been the older generations or imbeciles.

I used to see my parents watching this occasionally back in the 60's (yes even little ol New Zealand got it) but I couldn't stand it.. I was into the Beatles and R&R. Now I'm 56 and I still think its terrible, and seeing these clips reinforces my views. Why would any sane tv producer insist upon blacking the mens faces? My Mother (who is black Jamaican) used to love this show. She would probably enjoy watching these clips on YOUTUBE. I remember watching it as a very young kid and not liking it. Those of you who find this offensive are not living in the world I come from unfortunately. This was no more than good enjoyable entertainment back then and my grandparents went to see these shows live in London on many occasions. They were not racist and happen to be very caring, people who would do anything for anyone, no matter what their colour or race they were.

I was young when the Minstrels were on tv. No one was racist back then. They were a delight to watch, and who gives a damn what colour they were under the paint. I wish it was still like that. Black or white, we are all God's people, and should love each other.

Actually I think people need to respect this for what it is, a piece of history. It doesn't mean it was ethically correct, but it DID happen, and it isn't wrong for us to reflect upon it, since we aren't racist (hopefully) and only want to view it as a piece of our American history.

I had to do a project on Minstrel Shows. Originally they were to raciest. The people that wrote them were writing about problems they had in their life, but hiding it by blackening their faces and making it into a comedy show. They did not start being aimed at being actually raciest until the start of the Civil War, after Stowe's book, Uncle Tom's Cabin, was published.

Ministrels are supposed to be "happy" slaves.. Which never existed.

Also, a minstrel was more akin to a bard than a slave. minstrels were never slaves really they were just street performers traveling from one place to the other singing and playing an instrument for money like modern day street performers. As a small child aged 5 or 6 in the 60s, I believed sincerely that the black & white minstrels made me vomit. I believed the same about The Adams singers (sing something simple)
For decades I have thought this was a childish misunderstanding. I now see that I was right.
The music is bland, passionless, formulaeic drivel.
It's great that this is now "dead" music.
After all, it's abusive.

I used to see my parents watching this occasionally back in the 60's (yes even little ol New Zealand got it) but I couldn't stand it.. I was into the Beatles and R&R. Now I'm 56 and I still think its terrible, and seeing these clips reinforces my views. Why would any sane tv producer insist upon blacking the mens faces? It smacks of deep south bible belt phobias... Sooo weird.

My Mother (who is black Jamaican) used to love this show. She would probably enjoy watching these clips on YOUTUBE. I remember watching it as a very young kid and not liking it. Not because of the racism but simply because it was dated and boring. As I got older it began to give me a creepy uncomfortable feeling as I began to realise how wrong it was. Different generations have different tastes I suppose.
