  • For all of who bash her talent, I'm a 16 year old concert pianist and it took me 6 months of countless of practice to play this. It's insane, and if you want to bash her, put your own vid of you playing it perfectly. Otherwise let's support people with a passion for an instrument like this. It takes dedication!

  • this small letters in a screen is a translation for her language?

  • Za dobra jest :-) za szybka za zdecydowana, brak tajemniczości, tyle.

  • I was listening to this song on my piano and played it the same time as this video and noticed that she went too fast but other than that she was right on!!!!

  • omg!!! amazing!! my friend plays this piece on the piano and the first time i've heard it he left me completely speechless..

  • I think I just choked on pedal. Haha. Her talent is a-m-aFREAKINGzing though.

  • too flat....lack of emotion, and too much pedal

  • people and their critical bullchit and they can't even play themselves. you have no idea how many countless hours, and hard work she put into this etude. if you don't like this video, don't watch it. i bet all the critics have been here several times because this profound talent on her part.

  • l horreur ds toute son idiotie !!!!

  • 1:16 - MISTAAAKE!

  • @Rohinho13 so what! she's human, moron. let me hear your perfect version.

  • @PianoCriticsKiller I said "Mistaaake!" - that means - mistake. She could be a robot, but mistake will stay mistake. I'm not saying that She's bad - cause She's really good. You think that She was working at this etude for her entire life? She red this just after seeing the notes. It's not that hard as You think. Maybe You'll write - "So play it buy Yourself if it's so easy" - for Your knowledge, i've already done this. Critisise everybody -Don't You have a life? Don't care Hate and be hated.
  • I started practising it TODAY... I sure must be TOTALLY nuts! *lol*

  • dayum.

  • oh, no. this is not music.. gymnastics. change her teacher.

  • <3 This makes my heart sink.

  • Not much fun when you can't see her hands.

  • This and F. Kempf the most amazing videos of this...

My fav etude. Then Black Keys second. Both amazing!

  • ,,Cannons in the Flowers!'' -Seyed this in 19 century.

  • @JRTelevision1 well spoken!

  • !!!

  • OK, maybe not the best, but it's up there. I heard this played live last night. Almost inevitably, this piece is used as a means to show the world: "Look how fast I can play." This rendition is slightly slower and in consequence, more pleasant to listen to. Many pianists insist on being Formula One players. It's not a race. They sometimes forget why they are playing. To hear what I mean, listen to Idel Biret playing this piece - it's fast and it's awful.

  • amazing

  • wow!!!

  • Man. I will never cease to be amazed by how some people can push the limits of what is humanly possible. Beautiful!

  • I LOVE THAT ETUDE

  • Some of the ridiculous comments I've read on here so far are the reason I disable the 'comments' facility on my You Tube site. I mean, in this context, what does "God she got balls," mean? What does "It sounds the same," mean? My view, and I CAN play this piece: It's the best performance of this piece I've heard on You Tube. The acoustics of the venue and the fact it's not a professional video recording can give the impression of too much pedal, but I don't think so.

  • @JRTelevision1 It is a wonderfull performance, but god, not the best one on youtube!

  • I think that she over used the damper pedal. I'm not that good on piano, but I'm just saying ;)

  • This is the most accurate and powerfully played rendition of this so far that I have found on youtube and it is meant to be accurate and powerful after all it is "Revolutionary" fantastic!

  • Comment removed

  • wow. I never had so much strengh with my left hand. Always great to see such kind of perfomances!

  • God she got balls.

  • too much pedal...too much reverb.. just can't hear the bass properly...

  • @lugio1981

I'm not sure it's all pedal. It looks like it was recorded in a concert hall. I think most of the reverb is from the room. Studio recordings aren't the same as what we hear in a concert hall. The hall reverb makes the piece even more grandiose. Chopin wrote his music for smaller venues though. He personally didn't like to perform in concert halls. And this piece is an etude meant to straighten the left hand that became a performance piece because it's so incredibly challenging.

  • @lugio1981 Yup, too much pedal.

  • @lugio1981 You're a prick. She's Asian and will always be better at piano and everything else than you.

  • @3in1GODjesusHolygost but this doesn't means that is not too much pedal :))

  • @lugio1981 thumbs down until i hear your crispy clear version. if you can't hear the bass properly, get some ear drums, tard! she is amazing and you are jealous.

  • @lugio1981 Probably just the stage.... Ever think about that?

  • it sounds the same... same melody, same emotion and same notes.. why couldn't anyone compose their own emotion even the slightest melody...

  • i like her techunique, but her interpritation doesn't close to me, she plays it too correct)) but she plays good))

  • @TheRuslanlsmayil does this give you some kind of euphoric satisfaction to say that with your bitchy little ":)" after both sentences?

  • i n 1-03 minutes there are many lack of notes :) she is not playing all notes how it was written :)

  • @TheRuslanIsmayil why does it matter. it sounds good!

  • El sentido de una revolución: levantar ese corazón hacia un futuro mejor con decisión, seguridad, fuerza y con mucha FURIA!!!!!! Frédéric Chopin entendió eso y lo dejó en este hermosísimo estudio.

  • Fucking Japanese pianist!!!

  • Херня... С советскими пианистами даже среднего пошива этой китайской давалке делать нечего!!!

  • I think, Chopin would be happy! Really.

  • that was incredible. really like the way she plays the end as well. most people wait for the "forte" until both hands play; she climaxes to it. others keep it to soft. Amazing dynamics and emotion. Will definitely continue to use this video as I study and learn this piece.

  • I love how she plays it. Japanese people are so lucky to learn the piano when so young and get this good. Such an amazing piece. So emotion and dramatic. Just beautiful.

  • Easily my favorite piece ever written... ugh

  • this is truely awesome!!! as a pianist myself, I am speechless!!!

  • Her playing is wonderful. Trust me when I tell you that a "recording" and "live" are two different things altogether. I have dug this piece out of mothballs recently, and I remember why it was in mothballs in the first place. One must have endurance. The left hand when not properly trained to relax where necessary will begin to burn at the top nearer the elbow. This one is tough to play well. Best to start at 60, and build slowly to speed. I don't play this one as fast as Richter, but well. :)

  • Finally, a female pianist that plays this piece with some gusto! Kudos to this woman!

  • this is amazing. very very very good. excellent. wow idk what word to use for this!

  • wow! this is so good, but i think this is second from cecile licad.

  • would be an awsome theme for a boss battle!

  • she kinda seems like she is trying to get through the piece as fast as she possibly can. not very many "mistakes" but this piece has potential to be great, but not when you just rush through it. im sure she is a great pianist, but im not a fan of this interpretation

  • too much pedal? i'm not sure. i'm playing this piece now and i'm not sure how to go about it. pedal? or not so much?

  • @Thunderflower367 with this piece, you dont want much pedal at all. keep it light. make sure every note (especially the left hand) comes out clearly. having too much pedal makes the left hand become muddy and ruins the sound.

  • nice

  • DANCE PUPPETS!!! DANCE!!! : )

  • By far the most passionate, engergetic version I have heard so far.

  • @SpiffilyPeachy - Then you haven't heard/seen this one:

    watch?v=Tt8AQKFkYBk

She's wonderful; one of my absolute favorites, but check out Freddy & the emotions. 'Will blow you away! lol

    Enjoy!

  • HAHAHA! Thanks so much! About to look! =D

  • @SpiffilyPeachy i think Richter's version is the most passionate energetic one.

this is one is very good, though!

  • she is the jury for the 2010 chopin competition

  • A Musical Tornado

  • Ah! :D You're good! =))

  • 1:16

  • I couldn't play that if I lived to be 1 million years old- so I am in awe of anyone who can!

  • Aw! =/ Yea you can. =)

  • Comment removed

  • wonderfully virtuosic, but i just didnt feel it. the same with the third movement of beethovens appassionata, its been said that the work is often played "full of sound and fury, signifying nothing". not that its not entertaining

  • Fantastico!!! Stunning!!! Thank you so much for posting & sharing *^o^*

  • This is why i love the piano.

  • Superb!

  • Amazingly played. Alot of pedal though (or hall reverb). But definetly one of the better performed versions of this magnificent etude.

  • Either too much pedal, or way too much reverb in the hall.

I have original master tape copies of her 1985 performance at the Chopin Competition, she's really outstanding. I often listen to her performance and wish she came to Paris for a recital.

  • wow the speed is incredible and I only heard one small mistake! Great emotion, diversity and timing, thumbs up all around ^^

  • wow, great dexterity of fingers! i hope i can play like that someday. :)

  • I will shove your violin up your ass you stupid, racist scum bag ... Cockroach like u need to be exterminated....

  • very nice

  • Muchas felicidades. Toca impresionante. Lucio Uribe Ortíz.

  • @BassicStorm i hate you, you piece of shit

  • @BassicStorm ur insane she was amazing id give anything to play like that

  • @BassicStorm Fuck you

  • @BassicStorm

    asshole

  • @Animaturax wtf is wrong with u ! i have my opinion why insults?? ffs

  • It is not as good as the other ones

  • Beautiful...

  • Wow! She's GREAT!! I could NEVER do this. That's why I'm always in last place; hence, my name: LastPlacePianoPlayer. She's FIRST place!

  • zzz so many criticisms let me show u wats this etude is about:

FIRSTLY, the tempo says "ALLEGRO CON FUOCO" (lively WITH FIRE) and i can tel this vid potray this feeling correctly(i like it...)

Secondly, THE FIRE IS IN THE LEFT HAND, the right hand is only the melody

So, piano noobs hu criticize others when they s***, try playing like how she did then.

  • Hey, listen up, HATERS!!! This is an ETUDE, dude! This does NOT require "feelings", you wimpy faggots. This is not a Chopin ramantic piece, it's raw THUNDER for the left hand. Any emotions would look STUPID with this Fast and fury piece. Stop showing your ignorance with your STUPID COMMENTS!

  • @llllllllllllllllI rOmantic. correction.

So many jealous morons on YouTube. This videos ROX!

  • @llllllllllllllllI AHAHAHA. You honestly think F. Chopin would compose ANY piece of music (even an étude) without an emotional drive behind it? Keep up the emotions, wimpy faggots, and leave the musically inept to roll in their own bullshit. :D

  • @christoperfect - Hey! Chris! The only "emotion" that is appropriate for this video is this:

    watch?v=Tt8AQKFkYBk

And since she's feminine and poised, I don't think she's going there, dude.

    L8r !

  • @christoperfect I agree with you on the point that pianists don't need a body-gasm while they play to evoke emotions, but to play anything without emotional reason or feeling would just be a tragedy and defeats the point of musicianship itself. I rather enjoy the interpretation you suggested and the emotions come through in her playing, which is what I think all pianists should strive for. When you can show an audience why something is beautiful to you w/out the use of facials then u've got it.

  • The best female playing this on the Tube.

  • wow

  • OW! NOISE POLLUTION!

  • estamos sonando como bestia..

  • Wonderful !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • 音楽音痴の私ですが小山さんの弾く曲は凄く力強くてとても惹きつけられます。 深くて魅力的。

  • great power the rh fills the hall but lh is too heavy on the pedal theres no end to the phrases but i still like it for its power 4 1/2 of 5

  • @anonymousQ45 definitely too much pedal, right hand is a little too loud

  • @Obacoomb - Did you hear YOUR sorryass videos? Put your video where your MOUTH is, dude, because you SUCK.

  • @llllllllllllllllI i'm not a concert pianist, i also never claimed to be good

  • @Obacoomb agreed.

  • even masters play 98% sometimes...its hard to play perfect hehe

  • i need the 6th star!!! Awesome

  • Superbe, technique remarquable. Quelle énergie. BRAVO

  • If you search using 小山, you can find other postings of Michie's performances, including another Revolutionary Etude

  • Fantastic ! Superb demon left-hand and crytalline clarity throughout. Wonderful performance. Thank you.

  • This piano piece is one ahh can not put into words incomprehensible

  • pfft i think she's awesome but it sounds to mottled at some points

  • I am so fucking tired of people criticizing pianist's techniques, colors, rubatos, and so forth when they can come up with one simple solution: upload a fucking video showing your skills on the piano, man. This pianist was greeeat, not perfect, but yeah, good enough to five a her a 5-star-rating. It's much better than 90% of the pianists here on Youtube, and of course I am not talking about Horowitz, Zimerman, Argerich, these among others make up the 10% left.

  • @ThoughtGazeCarlos actually, this is better than Horowitz and Argerich too (but not Zimerman)

  • You don't need to be a cook to tell when food is bad.

I'm not necessarily defending them, but you don't need to be a virtuoso pianist to recognize a song may not be perfect.

  • @ThoughtGazeCarlos - A fucking MEN!!!

  • @ThoughtGazeCarlos

I personally quite like this performance and am not criticizing it. However, I'm commenting because I find your notion utterly ridiculous - that unless one has the skill to surpass the performance in question, one's opinion is instantly rendered invalid.

It's like commenting on a professional sports team - basketball, baseball, soccer, etc. when those players clearly possess WAY more skill than you do (correct me if I'm wrong). Have you ever done that?

  • @gojewla I gratefully accept your rebuke ha...ha! And I love your sports analogy by the way, but I posited that Koyama's lyricism was indeed melodious despite everyone's opinion. I am not an expert on these matters, although I must say I have been involved in music for 6 years now and read many books about Chopin (4 to be precise) and I have to say this performance was not bad at all. I thought many YoutTubers were unfairly criticizing her.

  • @ThoughtGazeCarlos Well I can understand your frustration in that. Some of the comments I have seen on here are obviously made by some very insecure individuals. I also love the trend of stating one's uninformed opinion as fact.

I think this is definitely one of the better performances of this piece I have seen on youtube, both technically and musically but I would expect nothing less in a major international competition.

  • Yeah! It's shame that many times I click on a Youtube link for some superb performances and read hatred underneath the video window whilst listening to the music. I suppose great music will always attract debate but maybe I'm expecting too much in wishing that people would think before launching into childish criticism of genius-level talents like Koyama. She could have played a Chopin work backwards and still made it sound musical :-) Music is more than the dots on the page like you said. :)

  • @ThoughtGazeCarlos we don't have to have skill in order to judge other's skill.

Take a look at the food critics on the show Iron Chef.

They don't know how to cook nearly as well as the Iron Chefs, but they DO know how to judge food because they have had proper training.

I myself am a pianist and so I can judge any piece I want.

    Good Day.

  • @ThoughtGazeCarlos : If criticism does not come from hatred is ok and is even useful...remember, good listeners are not necessarily good players and there is nothing wrong with it ;)

  • @ThoughtGazeCarlos I think Koyama would disagree with you here: as a virtuoso pianist, she (unlike you) can actually value constructive criticism. One who criticises constructively (and not out of jealousy) does not have to be able to play the piece that well themselves.

  • @ThoughtGazeCarlos Sir..Why don't you just listen and learn.I have been around the world and have developed an appreciation for culture , wonderful music as well as good Godley people..Please do not waist such foul breath in the mist of such beauty..There is no reason to use terrible language..Please Go somewhere else if you need that low class fowl attitude..Find God and learn about Love for the first time my friend. You are missing so much..

  • @airplanman Don't preach about God to anyone sir. Your religious views are of no importance to anyone here.

  • @TMusic5 God Bless You sir.Not Religion so much as God.The personal relationship with God (Jesus). Many people on youtube love God.It is sad that most do not know our Lord or have not had a personal relationship with him.Sad to say,I did not believe untill just about 18 months ago.Yes this is most important dicision you will make in this Worldly life.I pray that you open your heart to God and believe. The whole meaning of life will change and you will have a purpose other than being self serving.

  • @airplanman This is exactly what I was talking about. I'm very happy that you found satisfaction with your superstitions, but they are not for everyone.

  • @TMusic5 If you experienced what I did..after making such idiotic comments about God being a myth,as I most certainly remarked many times, you would never go there..I ,like most was a slave to sin...Now you have sins, imoral acts..whether it is dope..porn..sins of the flesh..addictions than chain you up and bind you that only God can set free..You are a slave to sin immoral acts without God.Sin will also Blind you to reality..God is reality my friend..I was an atheist..I was wrong..I experienced

  • @airplanman This is what I love about religious people such as yourself: you make huge judgements about other peoples' lives and simply assume that their life is wrong and without meaning or guidance unless they follow the same invisible man as you do. Do yourself a favor, and keep your superstitions and paranoid fairy tale beliefs to yourself. I say again, no one is interested.

  • i cant believe that im still typing. 1: "perfect rhythm": No. who cares. Rubato. Chopin was very strict with it. "perfect" rhythm. yuck. rhythm with no voice does not sing. Also, the melody here is a bit flat. overall, dynamic, but flat.

2: props to PianoReview. he's right, although I still say this is an OK performance (considering youtube doesnt have much other good performances that come up right away). Liszt was a beast. he was broken. so were the pianos he was done with.

    Done venting~

  • indeed, just a BIT too much pedal for my taste. but its fine. btw, to whoever said this has no emotion, its perfectly fine. true, a crapload of asian musicians bastardize classic pieces such as this with disgusting performances that are 100% technique, 0% emotion. this, on the other hand, is an exception. not great, but definitely not like most of her 'counterparts'.

  • The piece is clear in places (but unclear in other places) and has good left-hand work in many places.

The violinvirtuoso111 (his comments above) would be reminded that music is a universal language, and that he is rather uninformed in his comments - he is regurgitating an unoriginal cliche without any style whatsoever.

  • @ViolinVirtuoso111

She's Japanese, first of all, and there's no need for such ferocity in your comment, is there? How can you possibly say that she has no feeling in her playing? Besides tackling a VERY difficult piece, she played nearly without flaw, and with good emotion throughout, especially at the end. Every pianist interprets a given piece differently, so you shouldn't be so quick to cuss off an unarguably excellent performance.

  • o.0 crazy kid...

  • @ViolinVirtuoso111 are you really a virtuoso or are you just a retard?

  • For the record, Koyama is a Japanese name. Regardless, this is very well done and I would say there's plenty of feeling.

  • she's fabulous!

  • nothing wrong with the left hand, you can see it in perfect rhythm with the right at the beginning. Sound recording quality is the one at fault. Michie has close to perfect interpretation of piano works that requires a lot of emotional effort.

  • Good sound!!

  • to me, she is very uneven in the left hand, especially on the opening. also she used to much pedal. that is why the left hand sounds blurry

  • maybe its the echo problem?

  • Comment removed

  • best version of the revolutionary etude on youtube

  • Ignorance is bold, that dumb y1g1tcn,,, is a frustrated person, sorry, is the truth, or perhaps he or she can plays this master piece better than M.Koyama. Hahaha

This version is totally wonderful. Go make a life, y1gngaye!!!

  • this is fabulous and very clear left hand what gets an intell listener is her authoritative style.REAL FIRE .Not one of you CHILDREN? could ever play it with this kinda brio. u people dont even know rudiments of listening and piano schools and approaches .JUST SHUT UP sophomores!

  • too much pedal because of this hidden notes on left hand

  • There could be so much more dynamic contrast, especially in the right hand. The line needs to move more within the phrase.

  • where's the piece that should be in front of her? is it okay to memorize the piece to play piano? btw i'm confused

  • Not sure of your question...yes, it is okay to memorize your pieces to play for piano.

  • @darkbluemars: M. Koyama has the piece memorized already so she doesn't need the sheet music in front of her. In fact, especially during performances, auditions, etc., it looks more professional not to have the sheet music in front of the musician. Also, another benefit of memorizing a piece is that you can focus more on the emotional depth of the piece instead of the sheet music. In conclusion, it is definitely okay to memorize the piano piece.

  • i thought i'm not learning anything if i would just memorize the piece i play. thanks for answering

  • No problem :) Well, of course you have to know the piece very well before playing it memorized...and sometimes you may even discover more with the piece memorized, like thinking about how you can play it to bring more emotion out or clearly listen to all the notes you are playing and whether they are carried out, because with the sheet music, you may not be fully aware of how the audience is perceiving your playing ;]

  • very nice left hand finger techniques.

  • too much pedal.......

  • I like her use of pedal! That's what it's there for.

  • Golly, great finger technique in the beginning! Nice tempo, dynamic, and speed variations!

I'm also learning this piece! Isn't it a nice song?! :)

  • She's so enjoyable to watch. Very calm and concentrated. Not like these other flamboyant and obnoxious modern pianists.

  • Hmmm.... I just flowed too much. Errr, maybe "flowed" isn't such a good word, in this case. What I meant to say was that there was too much pedal, and it kind of clumped together in my ears.

  • I think it's the sad combination of the piano and especially the accustic of the concerthall.

  • Too much pedal, too muddled, not clear, somewhat perfunctory, .....also, the piano is too bright toned. Unexciting performance.

  • Too much pedal, bangy tone and very little phrasing. Technique was fine.

  • Grigor99, that's the way it's supposed to sound. The pedal makes it ROAR. Grrrough! lol

This is a fast, POWERFUL Chopin etude, not a Chopin romantic piece so no phrasing is necessary. It's supposed to be played very aggitated, which she does PERFECTLY! She's simply amazing!

  • I can't disagree about the power, she has that, but I was always taught that EVERYTHING must have shape and phrasing-fast playing, slow playing, loud playing, soft playing-everything. A bit more attention to this would not ruin the performance, but only add to it.

  • wow no mistakes from what i heard
