I like this song alot too. It's a post modernism response to society. I agree with Vengeful27's analysis of the lyrics, but I also like to think of the song as Harpa109 states. I have never connected fully with this song until I realized what the dancer referrs to - the puppet... I love the killers!

To hell with the conventional analysis, "Dancer" being a metaphor for 'Puppets'. That's a terrible hypothesis, for the mood of the song. Listen to the lyrics and the feel. Let the music flow, close your eyes and breathe slow.

The question is whether we're human, or something more... the people who really feel something to the beat, dancers lost in the music of life.

Sure, the political commentary might be the real meaning... but why not take a a heartwarming feeling from this instead.

The song is asking the question: Are we free, or are we subjects of society? Human means we can do what we want when we want. Dancer is refering to a puppet dancing on string. Having someone move you were they want you to go, thinking for you, and living our life like a routine that is all planned out. If you listen to the other lyrics you can see that dancer is actually refering to a puppet. "Cut the cord" or let us free is esentially what he is saying.
