I watched this movie with my best friend, she got it because her dad travels all the time. It was sooo entertaining. And an inside joke between us forever. :)

what if sita was some crazed stalker b#*!ch. and he tried to dig out nice like but finally just banished her... if the roles were reversed it might be easier to see the stalker
@infoseekrs if you know anything about ancient india, you know women did not have the luxury of being "some crazed stalker b#*!ch"..india back then is not too far from being like what afghanistan is under the taliban as far as controlling women
As great as Rama otherwise is, I consider his treatment of Sita to be his one mistake, and a hell of a mistake at that. Even though he was an avatar of Vishnu, he was still subject to the imperfections of mortality. I've seen more than a few versions of the Ramayana that actually left out the parts at the end where Rama banishes Sita, and I can't say I blame the people who decide to leave that out, even if I don't like the idea of changing the Ramayana.
I watched this with my 3 children (5, 8, and 11) yesterday and they all sat riveted. At the end of the movie I heard my 5 year old singing "Mama's good mama's great mama likes to bake a cake..." and I thought he got it all wrong but he told me that he knew it was actually Rama. Anyway, I love love love the opening sequence of this movie. I stand in awe of Nina Paley for creating this masterpiece.
The Rama song is pretty addictive. what instrument is it played on? It reminds me of an American/nursery tune played on a hammer dulcimer, but I bet it's really a Hindu tune on a more native instrument. any thoughts on both questions?
This song is my favorite part of the movie. The tune is so catchy and the content so ironic and it is powerful because it captures a certain kind of truth about the nature of male/female relationships (not all of them but many) and how women's sacrifice is seldom acknowledged and often not even seen and then the meta-commentary about the line between love and martyrdom.
I love the narrators!!!

I bet Rama would be ashamed if he heard these people sarcastically singing his praises

Sita is a needy lady. I know that's why Rama cut her loose, the story can say it any way they want.

The ending of this part 9 is wierd with that going back to the womb. I'm imagining that she was sinking gracefully to the earth.

My sons? How bout Sita? Trials again? Well trial of fire is more truthful than trial of water. Well, anybody can float if they learn swimming.

is the song MEANT to sound mildly satirical?
MrRadaikon 2 years ago
if you are referring to the "rama's great" song, and by "mildly satirical" you meant "INCREDIBLY satirical", then yes. ;-)
Falco98 2 years ago 5
Great lyrics :)
Rama's Just, Rama's Right, Rama is our Guiding Light
Perfect man, perfect son, Rama's loved by everyone
Always right, never wrong, we praise Rama in this song
Sing his love, sing his praise, Rama set his wife ablaze
got her home, kicked her out, to allay her people's doubt
etc.
