I was actually wondering why it sounded worse(: I love Emmy's voice for this song, it's not as strong as Caine's but a bit more delicate seems to fit the song much better. But to each his own(:
I saw Rebecca Caine performing the role in Toronto opposite Colm Wilkinson. She's far and away the best Christine I have heard- she understudied Sarah Brightman in London, but it should have been the other way round. Thanks for recalling a great memory.
BRAVO!! I was really impressed with the singer's voice, then I was like 'oh.. It's a different singer..' when I read the comments. Caine has got herself a new fan! <3
@Unperishable I get that Emmys voice made you love this song but Caine has a beautiful voice! I think that you look at other singers and try to find things you like about each of them Emmy is for sure NOT my favorite but she has a pretty and innocent sound to her, Caine I love her pure voice and I love Sierra Boggess for so many reasons. I think you should look for the beauty of each performer and not deprive yourself of seeing other great performers by limiting yourself to Emmy.
Rebecca Caine IS Christine. When I bought the Canadian Cast Recording, I was blown away by her voice. Emmy has a pretty voice & should have had more training. The actress playing Christine SHOULD be believable. She is taking over for the female lead in an opera & should sound like an opera singer. She is in fact The Prima Donna during that opera. Emmy is good BUT she didn't convince me that she could take Carlotta's place. I think she should redub this later on after more training.
I love the part where it goes down in the vent and through the small crack in the stone floor as the phantom stops dead in his tracks, instantly in LOVE with her!
well, i definitely like the singing better, i was also missing the strength and warmth in emmys voice, but i prefer the eding of the song in the movie! but anyhow love it!
@archivbox1 Well technically it was released in 2004, but she was 16 when she auditioned for the role in 2003 (her birthday is late in the year and she was cast by June) and 17 for the duration of shooting. So in this video she is 17.
This is gorgeous <3 Emmy did well for not being trained, so it's not her fault...The directors should have chosen someone who was well-trained. Must say though, I think Claire Moore edges Rebecca out by a hair ;) Just my opinion.
This makes me think that Emmy really ought to do a redub of Think of Me for the 10th anniversary 3d Blu Ray or whatever. It is her worst song on the soundtrack and I imagine that since she's had more singing experience and put out a couple of records, she might be able to do a decent take - with maybe a real cadenza?
OH MY GOD THE AGONY OF WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN!!!!!! The thing is, if she had just had another year or two of training and they had waited to make the film, she probably would have sounded much more like this. OH MY GOD THE CADENZA.
Whoa I had pretty much forgotten I had this up. Just want to thank everyone for the fun discussions and I want to throw in my 2 cents. For the record, I don't hate Emmy, I just much prefer Rebecca (to me she is THE Christine). Emmy's fine, though she lacks the warmth and power that I am accustomed to having grown up on Caine. Sometimes I want to hear Emmy, but I NEVER want to hear Gerard-- whole other discussion,I know, but I can't stand him. Perhaps I smell a Colm Wilkinson dub in the future...
Rebecca Caine - now that's what a Christine should sound like, not Possum here. I'm growing to dislike the movie more and more due to the fact that her acting and singing are not up to par. yes, she was 17 when the movie was filmed, and it's not her fault. I hold the casting director fully responsible.
@izdun11 Excuse me? The right words? The lyrics were changed a LONG time ago. It's the film that used the original lyrics and not the ones currently used in stage shows. And I like Emmy, but Rebecca Caine is far, far better.
I scrolled down the page and listen without watching. I realized that what I like about this song is Emmy's performance, her acting, her eyes while singing, which are really incredible. You replace her voice with someone else, that's the problem.
You have to remember that musicals made into movies are changed and cast to appeal to a broader audience than those who frequent live performances with trained performers. The casting director may have cast Rossum because she had a prettier face, looked the right age, negotiated the lowest salary, had the right schedule to do the film, was generally more pleasant to work with, or pressures from executives could have forced the casting. Movies are about collecting money, not showcasing skill
Fucking cocky huh? Glad I'm not the only one who thinks so, u r great without a doubt, maybe ur diction wasn't a 100 per cent clear all the time but yes u r good, but ur attitude isn't quite comparable
um, excuse me, but Emmy did a fantastic job. how dare you even think she did anything less than play her role PERFECTLY. She was supposed to sound a bit inexperienced. A bit differently than every other opera singer in the world. A unique voice. Her voice is beautiful and she DID have training in opera. Yeah this chick is ok but shes overdoing it BIG time. This is supposed to be a very gentle, sweet song. Not all loud and obnoxious. Emmy is better. And the casting was absolutely perfect.
no need to get cocky. Emmy has a beautiful voice, but she does not sing opera. sure, she may have had some opera training, but that, my friend does not mean she sings opera well. Rebbecca Caine was on Broadway for this musical && on the original Canadian cast recording. i imagine, if she was overdoing it BIG time, Andrew Lloyd Webber would have never picked her, but he did. are you questioning the judgment of the man who wrote this spectacular piece of music? i hope not. (;
I don't agree with the Emmy bashing. Her voice isn't operatic, true, but it's still beautiful in its own right. I love both Rebbeca's and Emmy's voices--they're each gorgeous in their own way.
In my opinion, Emmy did very well job. Remember, that in the story of the Phantom of the Opera, Christine was a young singer. She was still learning how to be an opera singer. If you want to hear an opera, you can listen to Carlotta for example (I mean an opera singer in PotO).
With a pure voice, a sweet face, acting with nothing else but her heart...
I think everyone who was ever connected to the phantom of the opera in any way, should be proud that Christine was played by such a talented young lady...
And I 'd like to add that I've seen 2 Christine aside Emmy, and no one was even close!
Emmy has a nice non-operatic mezzo voice, I'm not denying that. But the part of Christine requires a light lyric soprano like Rebecca. I wish the whole movie could have been like this video.
@PhanPhanPhanPhanPhan You're right, she is now. But she sounded a lot lighter when she played Christine (to me, anyway) but I can't really claim to be an expert.
@EponineJondrette She sounded lighter in her Cosette days, but if you want to listen to true light lyric sopranos, look up Robyn North, Katie Hall, Leanne Dobinson or Gina Beck.
Gosh I've been listening to this over and over, wondering why does it sound way better than in the movie - and today I finally found out ;) The singer here has an amazing voice, well, Amy is talented too, but she's not a good opera singer. To me the best Christine was Siera Boggess.
I listened to Rebecca once and went, "Sarah who?" And I love Sarah B. but not as Christine. It's funny too since the songs were written with her voice in mind. Huh.
Whenever I see Madame Giry (Miranda Richardson) now, I think of her as Lady Van Tassel in Sleepy Hollow. (I recommend that movie to all horror/Tim Burton/Johnny Depp/Christopher Walken lovers.) LOL =D
I have the soundtrack with Rebecca Caine, and I have to agree--she is fantastic! She has that richness and fullness of voice that Emmy Rossum does not have. She does that incredibly tricky slide at the end and you can believe that she could beat Carlotta. In the original version, Carlotta and Christine are competing against each other, instead of Carlotta being the comic relief. Thank you for creating this video!
Well, I will say this in Emmy defense, I really liked her. She looked the part and since this is a movie, suspension of disbelief came into play and for me, her voice is rather pleasant and at times did reach moments of beauty.
However, having heard Rebecca Caine dubbed, what can I saw other than...spectacular, brilliant and Caine's voice is one where suspension of disbelief NEVER comes into play. With that voice, you can clearly believe that Christine has dethrowned Carlotta.
yeah, hearing this takes me back to my childhood when I used to listen to this versions all the time... what a fantastic voice, which we`re lucky to hear
Could not have said it better... Rebecca was unbelievable in the role... I have to wonder if Brightman ever listened to the Canadian cast recording... I can see Sarah saying " Someone run that girl out of town..." LOL..
That's exactly the problem! People say "Emmy did well considering she isn't an opera singer", but I don't want someone who did an okay job, I want to see a talented performer! You are completely right; the casting directors for this movie were on crack.
well on the one hand i entrily agree with you, but on the other, the film was made for a the mass market and the mass market dos'nt like opera they like pop, so i can understand why they would have cast her,and her voice is on more of the classical side of pop,and she's very pretty aswell, but i have a promblem in generla with the casting for phantom, even the show, they keep casting mt singers and it's not a score thats supposed to belted at all, bring back singers like Rebecca thats what i say
@videorocker778 She was part of a Children's Chorus, admittedly it was at the Met, which is impressive for a 7 year old, but that hardly makes you a professional opera singer. Being an Opera soprano takes years of dedication to learning very difficult technique. Years that Emmy unfortunately did not put in. But thanks.
@rettophantom im sure in the extra's on the dvd they said that Emmy was 7 years old when she joined a royal opera house or something like that in Americaaa ? :s
@rettophantom Well I don't know. I like her way of singing. It may not fit an opera singer but it (imho) fits VERY well with the role. It was fantastic and beautiful imo.
@rettophantom actually, Andrew Lloyd Weber cast Emmy Rossum in this role... I do agree however that he could have found someone with a stronger voice, but I like the fact that Emmy was so young. I mean, Christine is a bit naive, so I think it works to have someone youthful in the role.
I think Emmy Rossum has a pretty voice, however, for this role, I don't think it works. Rebecca Caine sounds fantastic! She has such a powerful voice! Thanks for posting!

yeah, hearing this takes me back to my childhood when I used to listen to this versions all the time... what a fantastic voice, which we`re lucky to hear

@rettophantom Actually, Emmy was part of an opera company for a while.

But thanks.

@rettophantom You're welcome. But it's really effort that counts, right? And in the film, Emmy DEFINITELY made the effort.

@rettophantom omg.... I thought it was a pretty good cast.
