This movie is flawed, first off Ashigaru never wore Mempo masks only samurai wore 'em, also Uesugi Kenshin never battled Takeda Shingen one on one. The closest to that is their famous encounter when Kenshin rode up to Shingen and tried to cut his head off but Shingen blocked the attack with his iron war fan.
This is what War use to be like! 2 sides would meet and see who the better man really was, not this "I can shot a gun from 100 of feet away". A really war is when a man close eoungh you can see the rage and anger in their eyes....that is a Tue War and a True Fight!
Ooh. I haven't seen the movie the footage is from yet. And since it's about Shingen and Kenshin, it can't be anything but dramatic. Gotta track a copy of it down right away...
Well, among samurai movies Kurosawa's "Throne of Blood" is my favourite. The music here is from Shogun: Total War, if I'm not mistaken. A great game at its time...
@ColonelChamberlain almost all the rifleman foot soldiers would have been of peasant caste however. Worth bearing in mind that sabre cavalry wasn't obsolete yet in the time of the meiji civil war. Even in the west, officers usually used a sabre and pistol in those days and rarely used rifles.
@BVargas78 There wasnt realy a caste in this time this Country at War era the "castes" came with Tokugawa Shogunate tough they were probaly of peasant origin I find amazing how this era the "poor" could actualy rise high in hierchy Hydeoshi is one example and probly the best one he was from comom origin but rose to leader of all Japan! He started as Ashigaru carrying the shoes of his master! Many samurais in this time were of low birth origin in fact what made you a "noble " was your ability
Sort of. Gunpowder did not really become as lethal until around the 18th Century, and even then arguably it was only the American civil war that rapidly changed the face of war. In earlier times gunpowder was used more as an auxiliary shock weapon, and it was not until later that armies would consist solely of musketeers. Eg the Mughals, Ottomans, and Spanish all mixed traditional methods of fighting with gunpowder weapons in order to create a fighting force better than their foes
A Korean once told me that the Samurai era is highly romanticized by the modern Japanese and Hollywood. I'm not so sure, maybe he was just a bit jealous.
A Japanese army could easily take on a European army of the same period and win. This being the 1600's AD. That's why it took another 200 years until the west was able to establish dominance over the Shogunate.
@Shadowcry1000 I'm not exactly comparing them, i'm just saying the Japanese at the time could beat a european one, that's why the Spanish army in the Philippines didnt go to the aid of the Portuguese when the Japanese suddenly turned on them.
But who is to say that cultures with very differing forms of warfare have never clashed before? It happens, and although speculative, with good information to make a judgement, why can one not speculate on the outcome of such an engagement?
It is because logistically they couldn't do anything about japan at that time.
Cultures with different armies usually develop to fight in isolation against a familiar threat. So much that while they become adept at fighting one foe, they are more or less unable to fight other enemies. For example the reason for the Muslim conquests in India was due to the Rajput style of warfare being designed against other rajputs not nomads.
this movie was filmed near where I live. It was made in Kananaskis Canada west of Calgary. They were selling the armor and costumes at a film lot in Calgary after filming wrapped. I was only 9 and my dad had busted me throwing hatchets so he didnt want me playing with any more weapons. too bad because the stuff was awesome.
I think ur comment & point of view r very admirable...
No disrespect 2 u, ur country, or culture, but I very much think China's problem is still remaining a communist state with a dictatorship that has very few (if any) human rights & I hate how Mongolia is treated
i think heaven and earth and Ran are my two favourite samurai style films. Ran has an amazing plot thanks to mr Shakespear, and the directing is awesome as anything kurosawa akira does is mint, but you can't deny that heaven and earth has some of the best battle scenes ever!
It's a bit silly that Kenshin's forces are all black and Shingen's are all red. Would've been impossible to coordinate like that, you wouldn't be able distinguish one unit from another.
@rogelioVela1985 - you will love Kagetora , an epic samurai movie about a thief who has to pose as takeda Shingen to avoid a hostile takeover by the Oda clan after shingen dies
You can have the sword cutting edge up or down depending on what kind of sword is being carried. Generally speaking if it's worn cutting edge down it's a tachi if worn with the cutting edge up then it's a katana. Generally speaking.
Tachi = Katana up side down :-))) This is japanese culture it have very strong meaning of order and form :-) If it's edge up it's Katana = infantry sword, if it's edge down it's Tachi = cavalry sword. But offcause there were small difference in blade curve and length. But still normal Katana edge down qualified as Tachi.
yes, but it depend on period of the japan history and situation, this is not samurais on their walk through the city, this is cavalry samurai in battle, not sure same rule apply there.
uh....from the look of it, red army is Takeda side, and black army is Uesugi. I don't know, the 1 on 1 fighting seem inaccurate. Shouldn't Takeda fighting with only signaling fan until help arrive?
