Unless something drastic changes, Apple will always keep their OS tied to their hardware. The hardware is where they make their money and they use the OS to force people who want it to buy their hardware. The irony is, lots of people are now using Windows on Macs.

As much as I understand your point about the incongruence about both companies and their ads, the thing is: most users won't separate software from hardware. They will weigh the whole product experience as a whole. Therefore, I do understand why Apple and Microsoft are speaking to the same audiences in similar ways.

Now, what I think it was a mistake was for PC... err... I mean, Microsoft to talk balk to Apple. The leader NEVER answers to the underdog. MS just empowered Apple.

Mrbit, Windows isn't the only competitor. Apple has made SEVERAL ads touting their hardware vs PC hardware.

They are saying, 'We have good hardware AND software, buy from us.'

Saying 'open the OS up', just echo's words that nearly led to Apple going bankrupt in the 90's, we've been over this time and again.

Clones were Apple licensing hardware, very expensive RISC hardware out AND it was not the reason for bankruptcy. I know the reasons Apple sells OSX, the migration I see of which i will do a vid are the move to intel and the next step to extend os x beyond Apple hardware, hey it may never happen, but I know it would not kill Apple, it would make them stronger and I never expect an OSX domination over windows but a much larger % market share than today.

Think of this as a game of chess between microsoft and Apple.

Microsoft has a lot more pieces but is missing a queen and maybe it's knights. Apple has it's queen, knights and pawns. It can win it, but only if it is very VERY careful about its moves. What you suggest is reckless.

The Clones accounted for barely any of the Mac OS sales. This had little to do with Apple's financial problems.

Saying that Apple hardware will not sell because OS X is on regular hardware is a poor argument. People will continue to purchase Apple hardware because of their positive past experiences with reliability and support.

Apple might loose a bit of hardware marketshare if OS X does get set free, but that cost will be recouped 10 fold in software.

I having nothing against the mac, but most of the mac's I use crash a lot on the software side. the os itself barely crashes but the applications inside of the os crash much more then windows on the computers I have used. I will see if it is better when snow leopard comes if it has fixed the issues I have had with leopard and tiger(my favorite). No os is perfect that is for sure. they both work well if they are in the right environments, and situations. I am getting a next gen macbook though.

The thing I wonder is didn't you use to be a windows fanboy. nothing wrong with that. I like to custom build so if its a desktop for sure I am choosing the PC(windows/linux,etc). the mac laptops seem better than most, the only thing I don't like is I heard that in bootcamp it runs hotter than when you are running mac osx. does it still take forever to import video files to imovie? just a question don't get mad, but when I use to use mac, it took 300 minutes to import an avi file to imovie.

I was never a windows fanboy, I was a PC fanboy and I still am. And I agree with you. And I haven't gotten my mac yet but my brother has a mac mini. And to tell you the truth, iMovie and Windows movie maker both equally suck. Sometimes OS X has trouble dealing with Windows proprietary formats (which avi is) I suggest converting to mp4, it is friendly on all platforms.

Apple makes both software and hardware. Microsoft only makes software. So, while Apple can launch attacks at other OEMs, they were smarter and attacked the competitor—Windows—and criticized it's faults. In Apple's case, the software is only there to sell the hardware. In other OEM's case, the hardware is there to sell the software. In other words, Apple doesn't care that much about the hardware and focuses on giving the best end-user experience and best OS.

Never set mac os x free. This is how i see it, apple innovates on there hardware and software and it shows. I saw apple introducing isights on most of there computers as standards, soon after hp and dell did the same on some of there computers. I see apple with back lit keyboards and now is see dell and other doing the same. I see apple using ddr 3 ram on all of their mac, other computer companies are slowly doing this now. I see apple innovating and other following apple. Thats what I see.

I agree 100% with this video. The way I see it, only good thing about running windows is the hardware. And the only good thing about mac is the software, and their advertising reflects that. When you ask a windows fanboy about what's so great about windows, 9/10 they will start talking about hardware, and price. Ask a mac fanboy what's so great about macs, they will say the things that are in the commercials.

I am a computer fanboy; Microsoft supports more companies than Apple and the hardware is by far better and cheaper for a pc, on the other hand OSX is very stable and secure but that isn't because it is better it is because it doesn't have the same support and openness as windows and has a smaller share of the market. watch my old set os x free vids. Many project the problems of windows on other OSs. The problem is that the Operating Systems are different and Windows has legacy that has haunted it and has lead to many of its weaknesses. Apple will have issues just as they are creeping in with the switch to intel, but it will never be another windows and could never run on as much as windows does either.

Windows 2000 was stable yes, NT4.0 was stable yes. 98 SE don't know about that. BUT Windows XP was not stable. Win XP is bluescreen haven. Also to add it's about as secure as a KKK klansman walking through the projects in full gear. I am not lying to myself you see because OS X (btw I am a linux guy not mac to be clear) is based on BSD, which is the best kind of UNIX. And if it was on a lot of systems it would not face the same fate as windows. Linux runs fine on just about anything.

Windows fate is its registry. it can run well but the registry bad design turns it into crap after prolonged installing, and uninstalling. If you leave windows with the same applications for a long time, it will be stable, not as stable as unix, but it will be stable. the record up times are on netcraft have windows pretty close to the top, but BSD, AIX beats it. windows runs well as a business machine because most of the time it usually has the same applications on it for prolonged periods.

Apple has been coasting on these snobby ads for a while now. I agree that the best solution is to set OSX free to run on any hardware, retail or home built. I would love to run OSX, I just can't afford a decent Mac, and I already have a decent PC.
