very nice.. love hearing the differences in the way 12 stringers approach playing the standard 12 rock n' roll war horses. got my 1st 12 string last week (jimmy page dano) after nearly 50 years as a 6 stringer only. putting it through it's paces just like the stuff you're doing...long live the jangle and brit power pop but don't forget to go to kashmir and get you some tangerine.
I just bougjt a 2011 FB 12-string Ric, added a "toaster" middle pickup, custom 12-way bridge and cut-out pickup guard and WOW with the other two high gain pick ups it kicks every Ric I've heard.
Sounds great. You're right, 'tis a wee bit out of tune. I use D'Addario's for my Ric 360/12V64. They stay in tune for a while. What years yours ? I'm guessing post 80's, 24 fret with toaster tops.
Thank you, it sure has the sound, nice playing. I read somewhere that the studio put two of their compressors on the Rick because they wanted to protect their equipment, or some other reason?
that little pinky looks so ugly when you bend it so. but the frag of "so you want to be a rock roll star" plays true. one of the only things you did that was of value.
In a way. The 300 series Ricks are semi hollow-body guitars that some refer to as simply "hollow body" (back in '64 the 360s looked very much like a 330, but with some upgrades). There is a hollow cavity at the top of the body and the guitar is solid in the area where the pick-guard and electronics are. It's electric for sure.
i think it was technically a 370/12 (body binding front and back and three pickups). my understanding was they presented him with one of the first models they made. serial number 0002. epiphone presented john and george with casinos, which they used a lot. among others, i played a 370/6 years back.
george played a 370/12 and assorted gretsch hollow electrics up till about 1965, then he started playing an epiphone casino, and an sg-i think with p-90s. later on, he's seen playing a rosewood body telecaster, strats, the sg, the casino....actually, a lot of guitar tracks were put down by both paul and john too. example: paul is all guitar on' taxman.'
If you look at the photos of George after the 1st US tour he's playing a 360/12 (two toasters). Prior to his receiving the Rick in NY he worked with a Gretsch. One exception was a 425 he picked up when visiting his sister in the US around 1963. You can see him playing it on an episode of "Ready, Steady, Go".
The 360 was the 2nd made by Rick and there is debate as to whether Rick gave him the guitar or a local NY radio station did.
What's the song you play after your nice rendition of Nashville West at the end? It's one of the few songs that sounds so familiar but can't but a finger on it
"Faith To Arise," by the absolutely wonderful Terry Reid. Not done on a 12 string originally, however. There are some UTubes of him doing this song (and others). Check them out.
yeah, it will never play in tune...because the sadle compensation can't be set for the secondary strings, only the primary. and the secondary strings are much thinner...thus, the intonation won't be right. to a certain extent the 'out of tune' sound is exactly what gives a 12 string it's distinctive sound. but for practical purposes, you can only play within four or so frets before you need to capo and re-tune for a higher position.
it's been 10 years since i played them. back then, a 12 string bridge wasn't available, you had to live with the factory 6 saddle bridge-and always be getting out of tune.
having never played the pyramid strings i can tell you i do have rikenbacker strings on my 620/12 and i like em... theyre a little tense but hey its a 12 string its not like your gonna be getting the feel of an ESP (goddamn have you played one of those!?!?! LOL they are sooooo loose)
@marccomptois0913 the Pyramids aren't as high tension as Rotosounds. They're actually very easy to play. Between those and the Thomastiks are my favorite strings
I LOVE this Jangle Riff Medley. I love Old Blue and wish McGuinn would play it on the Rick in concert instead of the, cough cough banjo.. All the Byrds content including Nashville West, Bells of Rhymney, My Back Pages, etc, plus The Drone Song from Richard Heyman.
I could listen to you play for hours.
Thank you so much for posting this and keep jangling, my friend!
I like how you played Listen To Her Heart by the Heartbreakers. Funny because from what I hear they don't use the 12 on that song even though it has that distinct sound
Actually Mike Campbell plays his 620-12 on that track. It's hard to hear it, but during the little solo lick at the end it can be heard the most, although its the treble unison pairs being played.
Thanks. I've seen them live several times and heard them perform that song on numerous occasions but it still looks like he uses a Rick 360/6 on it and not a 360/12
Hints of "Old blue" and "Tambourine Man" and even "Turn, Turn, Turn. A great sound for sure. The Janglebox is the weapon of the 60's next to the Rickenbacker-12 itself.

Thanks - I subsequently put on D'Addario strings. The guitar was made in 2006.

@superreverbking If you really want "that sound"? Get Rickenbacker flat-wound strings (they call 'em "tape-wound" in the UK)...you won't be sorry.

@Salguine
I actually have a set of those ready to be put on. Thanks for watching the vid.

@Salguine Even better, get the Pyramid flat wounds. Those truly are "the sound". The Pyramids last for a very long time too.

@kgillum They'd better, for 36 bucks a set! I'll stick with the Ricks. Thanks for the tip, though!

I think McGuinn ran his Ric into the board via a tube compressor or two. Maybe those old Pultec's or UA's.

Buy the Janglebox from a Steve Lasko in Virginia or at Rickenbacker factory in Fullerton in CA.

If you mean George from the Beatles, he played a 360/12. One of the earliest produced by Rick. The story of how he got it is pretty cool.

@eoinstewart Georges first 360-12 was the 2nd Ric 12 built, but was the 1st one to have the Octave Strings strung after the regular strings.

George played a 360/12, my friend. He had a couple of them. One wth binding and one without.
He used one of them in the "Cloud Nine album in 1987 too.

Go to janglebox(dot)com I got my JangleBox there about a month ago for my two Ric's. Really gives my 330/6 and 360/12 that awesome "jangly" sound.

You really need to use a 12 string bridge to stay in-tune.
I replaced the standard 6 string bridge and it really helped.
