my bunny just gave birth but she is stompping on them n sum already have cuts... 3 of her kits she somehow accidently shoved them out of her cage n my cats got hold of them... so i have 3 of them in a box because she doesnt seem to care about them... what should i do? :(
I am hand raising a baby bunny that was born on 8-2-2011. "Jessica" had a hard time raising them, 4 died within the first day another died the next. The last baby I took from her hutch and it's been 10 days since I've had her. She eats well (aspirated once but I quickly helped her) she's been eating kmr with heavy cream added 2x a day until her stomach is full (between 15-25ml a day) she looks small to me, sometimes is dehydrated (but after eating plumps up) but she still doesn't seem right...
@TheFavoriteLover88 : Mommy rabbits do not nurse for the first 24 hours. If it is still the first day do not worry. She should have milk by the next day. If she will not nurse then your vet can give her an oxotocin shot to stimulate nursing. Send me a private message with your email and I can give you more tips.
My rabbit has babies now, too... but she pushed them out of their nest corner and then stopped feeding them ! so now i guess I have to raise them, but I read a lot about it and it seems to be REALLY difficult to get them through, when the mother is completely refusing to get near them, I tried...
And now I bought this special milk powder, but they don't want the new milk ! How can I "force" them to eat? It's not like they have any other choice! :(
@JoanaMara : Perhaps try to give mama special treats in the back of the nest box while you her over the babies. Usually after they latch on she gets a flood of "happy" hormones and she likes the suckling. You may need to gently hold her shoulders until she gets to experience this and get that nurturing hormone. A minute should do it. I make sure she has a yummy snack by her head so that gets her attention and she wants to be there. They only feed once a day.
The rabbit didn't "go" for the hand. The rabbit was sniffing the hand. Just like a cat or dog would do if you were to pick up a baby. They wanna know who you are.
That is true in the wild but it is not true in domestic bunnies that are raised by moms that know the handler. I've been doing it for 15 years. I touch and handle all my babies every day to be sure they are getting enough milk, to check their eyes and to get them accustomed to handling. My rabbits are all comfortable with me and with guests who visit. Georgia
Excellent, I'll be able to refer people to this vid. so they know what to look for.
Thanks,
Angie.

but some times it isen't good if you and the rabbit a good freinds she migth let you touch them
nibbles87400 3 years ago
Yes, in a wild or un-tame rabbit it is good not to touch them. Domesticated pets are different.
