@aurasmash I'm inclined to agree with 666deathghost, Death was never an absolute definition of death metal, bands like Morbid Angel, Obituary, Autopsy have always been more pure death metal, while Death sometimes was ever less death metal than many bands like Slayer on Hell Awaits. Some fine vocal work is to be heard on Scream Bloody Gore, but the structures are largely similar to a mix between Bonded By Blood and Reign in Blood, both the minimalistic grace of Exodus, and the insanity of Slayer.

Listen I love Black Metal more than all the extreme genres but Norwegian Black Metal is garbage. I don't even like Death Mwetal that mch but i still say Swedish Death kicks the shit out of Norwegian Black Metal.

Hum, not exactly. Black death... But like Marduk they was a part of the swedish death metal scene, because in this time, there was no difference between black and death metal.
One of the best promo shots for me are the Grotesque's classic Graveyard shot, Entombed's promo shot under that huge cross in a snow blizzard ( truely epic ) and CoK's promoshot in front of that big runestone.

Those vocals are more of american death metal vocals i agree, those doesn't make sweden unique as the more agressiv and tormented vocals that matti uses.
there's no denying Slayer has gone in a different direction from there early stuff, but I wouldn't say they have gone as far as Metallica. Metallica used to be something, but than the Black Album came out and we realized they weren't much w/out Burton.
oh well sweden does produce good death metal bands :D thought there are some other good like..Bolt thrower wich is from britain and CC from usa CC = Cannibal Corpse =)

they're too much melodic to be called old school. I think that both hypocrisy and edge of sanity negatively influenced death metal, especially hypocrisy in their late works. If it's not heavy, powerful and raw it isn't old school death metal :D
maybe maybe hypocrisis' penetralia and obsculum obscenum are ok, beacuse tagtren had freshly arrived from dark funeral. then with abducted they became pretty boring. okm their first works can be considered old school, but they aren't fundamental. entombed and dismember are much more important and nowadays suck less
well, same here. Slayer have pretty much gone the same direction as Metallica as far as being true to their original sound and fans goes. I'm personally far away from worshipping anything.
Can some one recommend me some death metal bands that dont have such fucked up lyrics because I love the music the vocals sound cool but when the lyrics are so disturbing I start to feel sick listening to it it. Mutilation and fucked up sexual stuff isn't my thing. Other then that the music fuckin kicks ass!
Many modern death metal bands use gory lyrics as a shtick to sell their music by, but the older artists have to be examined from a deeper perspective (as their music had more depth than their successors). Is death not a necessary, and even beautiful component of life? How could we live in a world crowded with deathless beings? You can not enjoy life until you embrace death and thus destroy your fear of it; this was the theme of older death metal bands.
Well do your homework and find your own bands to lsten too like I do. I only take notice of some of my bands lyrics like Edge Of Sanity, Death, Morbid Angel, Zyklon, Hypocrisy, Pestilence and Asphyx. Those are only SOME of the band lyrics I take notice of. Horror lyrics don't bother me to much because I'm not weak. Although I have my limits epecially with garbage pornogrind, deathcore and goregrind.
Ever since I started listening to metal I've changed ALOT with my apperance and outlook on life but horror lyrics I don't take notice of. Horror lyrics are just like a movie, it's only for shock entertainment. Only people with mental problems would act out a murder because of the music they listen too. That's why I hate when "outsiders" say "rah rah rah this music is for lowlifes", they don't know shit!

Older death metal usually had a more anti-religious vibe, or merely described scenes evocative of death in a non-cheesy splatter flick fashion. Cannibal Corpse brought the more mainstream gore extremity to the forefront around 1996, which is when death metal started to become more of what it's known for today. I personally prefer the oldschool.
Damn -- look at all those amazing bands back then and look at all the garbage now. It's a joke that bands like Waking the Cadaver, Job for a Cowboy, and all those other deathcore crap get record deals while Darkified and Nirvana 2002 never released a full length.
For those of you who are wondering why bands such as 'Bloodbath' and 'Aeon' aren't shown here is because they're not OLD SCHOOL Swedish death metal bands. Bloodbath is a newish sort of band not from this era but play in this style. 'Ribspreader' is another newish band that's also dedicated to this style so you guys should check them out!

One of the best promo shots for me are the Grotesque's classic Graveyard shot, Entombed's promo shot under that huge cross in a snow blizzard ( truely epic ) and CoK's promoshot in front of that big runestone.
One of the best band shots in existence . . .

Yeah man a almost agree with you (Tombking2), I'm not much into those gutteral vocals. I think they're pretty silly, however the music is really crushing!
Those vocals are more of american death metal vocals i agree, those doesn't make sweden unique as the more agressiv and tormented vocals that matti uses.

there's no denying Slayer has gone in a different direction from there early stuff, but I wouldn't say they have gone as far as Metallica. Metallica used to be something, but than the Black Album came out and we realized they weren't much w/out Burton.

they're too much melodic to be called old school. I think that both hypocrisy and edge of sanity negatively influenced death metal, especially hypocrisy in their late works. If it's not heavy, powerful and raw it isn't old school death metal :D

maybe maybe hypocrisis' penetralia and obsculum obscenum are ok, beacuse tagtren had freshly arrived from dark funeral. then with abducted they became pretty boring. okm their first works can be considered old school, but they aren't fundamental. entombed and dismember are much more important and nowadays suck less

Yeah, Grave was one of the first Swedish Death Metal bands I came by. I actually saw them about....5 or 6 months ago at MDF.

Can some one recommend me some death metal bands that dont have such fucked up lyrics because I love the music the vocals sound cool but when the lyrics are so disturbing I start to feel sick listening to it it. Mutilation and fucked up sexual stuff isn't my thing. Other then that the music fuckin kicks ass!

Many modern death metal bands use gory lyrics as a shtick to sell their music by, but the older artists have to be examined from a deeper perspective (as their music had more depth than their successors). Is death not a necessary, and even beautiful component of life? How could we live in a world crowded with deathless beings? You can not enjoy life until you embrace death and thus destroy your fear of it; this was the theme of older death metal bands.

Well do your homework and find your own bands to lsten too like I do. I only take notice of some of my bands lyrics like Edge Of Sanity, Death, Morbid Angel, Zyklon, Hypocrisy, Pestilence and Asphyx. Those are only SOME of the band lyrics I take notice of. Horror lyrics don't bother me to much because I'm not weak. Although I have my limits epecially with garbage pornogrind, deathcore and goregrind.

Ever since I started listening to metal I've changed ALOT with my apperance and outlook on life but horror lyrics I don't take notice of. Horror lyrics are just like a movie, it's only for shock entertainment. Only people with mental problems would act out a murder because of the music they listen too. That's why I hate when "outsiders" say "rah rah rah this music is for lowlifes", they don't know shit!

Older death metal usually had a more anti-religious vibe, or merely described scenes evocative of death in a non-cheesy splatter flick fashion. Cannibal Corpse brought the more mainstream gore extremity to the forefront around 1996, which is when death metal started to become more of what it's known for today. I personally prefer the oldschool.

Damn -- look at all those amazing bands back then and look at all the garbage now. It's a joke that bands like Waking the Cadaver, Job for a Cowboy, and all those other deathcore crap get record deals while Darkified and Nirvana 2002 never released a full length.

For those of you who are wondering why bands such as 'Bloodbath' and 'Aeon' aren't shown here is because they're not OLD SCHOOL Swedish death metal bands. Bloodbath is a newish sort of band not from this era but play in this style. 'Ribspreader' is another newish band that's also dedicated to this style so you guys should check them out!
