Percee P makes all other emcees sound like shit. after hearing this, i want to hear Percee P over some original DJ Premier production. yeah, he has Madlib and Lib is dope as fuck (actually he's my second favorite producer along with J Dilla), but DJ Premier and Percee P were born to collaborate. luckily Percee P is my boy so i'll try to eventually find a way to convince him to get at Premo about collaborating ;)
every one sounded nice on this, wouldn't say percee's verse beat any body. percee is nice [put it on the line blew my mind when i first heard it 3-4 years ago on NahRight], and i have perseverance. w/all of that sad, my main problem w/percee is that he seems to have the same structure w/each verse and causing him to have that same flow. i would like it if he switched it up more. (his freestyles w/fat joe & eminem are great). also, IMO, finesse got him in '89 in their battle (contd)
@gl51490 yeah, everyone was sick on this, no doubt. i just feel Perce is dope on everything he does. i've been amazed since i first heard him. yeah, i know what you mean by switching it up, but Perce has a formula to making his verses that is hot and he will never switch it up because it just works. if it sounds like he has the same flow on every track, that's because he does. it's like DJ Premier. every one of his beats follows a specific formula, but he's still probably the best producer...
@gl51490 yeah, everyone was sick on this, no doubt. i just feel Perce is dope on everything he does. i've been amazed since i first heard him. yeah, i know what you mean by switching it up, but Perce has a formula to making his verses that is hot and he will never switch it up because it just works. if it sounds like he has the same flow on every track, that's because he does. it's like DJ Premier. every one of his beats follows a specific formula, but he's still probably the best producer...
...ever, mainly because he has a formula that he sticks to that works. Perce even talks about it in "The Woman Behind Me" on Perseverance. that whole extended metaphor on that track is about his style. he is saying he'll never cheat on her, as in he'll never switch up his style, because it has never let him down yet.
as for the Fat Joe/Eminem "freestyles", those were dope as fuck, but Perce doesn't freestyle and, contrary to popular belief, Eminem rarely does. Fat Joe's shit was written too...
...as for Finesse getting him, MAYBE in their track where they had the video that was supposed to be like a reunion battle, but back in 89 Finesse hadn't developed his style to the level he has now, or even the level Percee was at then. Finesse has improved A LOT since then, faaaaar more than Perce has. Perce hasn't improved much at all really, but he hasn't had to. Finesse, to me, is up there with Perce, but i am a bit biased because Perce is my favorite emcee, even over ppl like Rakim.
@gl51490 damn thing didn't post my first comment! >( i was basically saying that Perce sounds like he has the same flow, but that's because he does. but that is a good thing. he's got a formula that works, just like DJ Premier does.
Yes, but, for me to show you're an elite rapper you have to have more than one style. Percee is nice at what he does, but, I prefer other artists that can switch up styles on several tracks/appearances. I truly believe Finesse deserved to be the victor in their '89 battle (wish that damn ice cream truck wasn't going off for 2/3's of it!) Finesse is easily one of the most underrated rappers of all-time (i'm talking by the heads -- not just mainstream media). And yes, I'm aware (contd)
@gl51490 again, if you hold that a rapper should have that sort of versatility, i don't see why you wouldn't say the same of a producer, yet Premo is undoubtedly one of the greatest producers of all time and he NEVER switches his style. i don't see why the same can't be said for an emcee. i agree Finesse is one of the most underrated of all time though, and would say the same for Perce, and i think you can probably agree.
as for freestyle, the true definition is spitting a verse to a beat...
...that it wasn't specifically intended to be spit on. but yeah, basically i agree with you. if you are going by that definition, then yes, they are freestyles. it is definitely a common misconception though.
@gl51490 i figured you would have posted "Words I Manifest" if anything as that was probably the best example of him showing early diversity but still showing production close to the level that he would later show. that's the thing though, it wasn't until he found his sound that he got dope, and he has since produced almost every beat in exactly the same way. Premo has a signature sound and not a single one of his best beats deviates from that sound. i'm sure Perce experimented early on too...
...but he found his sound quickly and never really recorded any of his experimentation. the same can be said for Premo's partner in Gang Starr, Guru (RIP). he sounded exactly the same on every single track and, if you were into his style, it was dope. however, if you listen to early Gang Starr promo shit (pre-Premo. back when it was Guru, Mark The 45 King and that other emcee. forgot his name), Guru used to have an energetic flow that was waaaaay different. in fact, you can hear it a bit on...
...but he found his sound quickly and never really recorded any of his experimentation. the same can be said for Premo's partner in Gang Starr, Guru (RIP). he sounded exactly the same on every single track and, if you were into his style, it was dope. however, if you listen to early Gang Starr promo shit (pre-Premo. back when it was Guru, Mark The 45 King and that other emcee. forgot his name), Guru used to have an energetic flow that was waaaaay different. in fact, you can hear it a bit on...
those verses weren't off the top, but, I define a freestyle the same way Big Daddy Kane does. And that is, that a freestyle is simply a verse that has no direction or topic. Off the Dome, is different. That's you improvising with no preparation on the spot. I don't think that "freestyling" and "off the dope" should be synonymous -- I feel that's a common misconception within the culture.
Pap & Sean P are my two favorite MCs in the world right now - was great to hear them back to back like that ... not to mention all the rest!!!! Beautiful.

premo definitely showed versatility early in his production career:
