this guy is the most straight up and "human" person ive ever seen in an interview. even a dick sometimes in them but there it is again ..."human". mekes me relate with him all the more.
ok this guy is one of the greatest musician of our time period!! And people who listen to this and the deepest comment you can make is about his speaking voice I feel very sorry for you! Maybe you need to keep watching shit like Lady Ga Ga she will keep your little minds occupied while the rest of us listen to real music. You should not make dumb comments when you clearly don't know what the hell your talking about.

I am sorry. I have a few of his albums.. he does create some catchy tunes but his voice almost irritates me. Its muffled, whiny, nazelly and just not catchy. I have tried and tried over and over again to really love his music but it all comes back to his voice. I wold have to say my favorite tune is revelation big sur
my mothers got the same problem. he voice carries and she doesnt like hearing it in the distance. it says it makes her angry : / i love it though :) its unique, and perfect for complementing his guitar playing style
Yeah, I don't get people bashing Mark. I've talked to Erlend Oye from Kings of Convenience a couple of times and he was an ass on both occasions. I still love his music, though. It's not about the person - it's about the music, and Kozelek makes some of the best. So STFU and enjoy his records.
He gave us some of the most beautiful songs ever written, he doesn't need to give us anything else, so for those of you digging deep into Mark's personal life and making accusations that he's so cocky or whatever, just stop. He's just a man doing what he loves to do, look no further than that.
Koz is classically trained, and I am certain he has the ego to go along with it. I think the reason Koz copped such an attitude is because he was this very talented musician with a whole lot to say- and (at the time of the Red House Painters' heyday) he had the misfortune of living in one of the most pretentious cities in the world- San Francisco. No easy feat- especially when he was completely immersed in a music scene, which (at the time) consisted of a bunch of no-talent morons.
He may be battling depression from what it seems on this interview and like he points out is in now position to afford a rock-star entourage to keep him on his feet. I say he's success is already been acheived and proven - too bad this society won't pay you for being talented unless you kissed everyone's ass and make them all rich before you can even catch up with your rent.
Technically the third album. the first was down colorful hill. the second was the "roller coaster" album(my favorite!)and the third album was the "roller coaster" b-sides which contained "Bubble". An awesome album, but bublle was a highlight.
Some performers, especially those in Kozelek's genera, disappear into the music. Its probably hard to go from this kind of introspection to the jokey storytelling for an audience. Look at Ray LaMontagne, Nick, Drake, etc.
to everyone whos saying he ungrateful for his fans and all that...i really dont think thats it at all. i think hes just shy,and like someone said, has something of an inferiority complex,so he assumes people DONT like him,and people make him quite nervous. at least thats how it seems to me..
I think his music is his gift to the fans. He should not be required to give anymore, since the music sends the message. As fans we can confirm Mark Kozelek is intelligent, emotional (especially melancholic) and slightly alienated from what is going on around him sometimes, and we have discovered all this from this highly advanced music, not his awkward interviews. As a modern songwriter, he is almost without peer.
Mark is a disturbed man. Note that during this interview, Mark struggled to even make contact with the interviewer. He definitely has an inferiority complex. Having one myself, I sort of appreciate that side of him. That's where all the beautiful songs come from.
Give the man a break. Most of his audience are assholes who talk and ignore Mark's quiet, introspective music. After bootlegging many of Mark's shows, its quite apparent there is a hate/love relationship.
Very well said. There was also this asshole on the concert in stockholm last week who called out "PLAY WITH YOUR FUCKING HEART MARK", which Mark was seemingly saddened by. Who wouldnt be, hearing that idiot comment when having prepared for a gig an entire day?
Love Kozelek so very much. For years now he has accompanied me with his unique and majestic sound. I have had the pleasure of meeting him backstage too, which was an experience! London Conway Hall, unfortunately I got stuck on a train that someone jumped infront of, sadly so. I missed most the concert, so we decided to jump over the stage and burst in on Phil Craney and himself. Random though I do not regret it at all! I walked in on the encore, which was Duk Koo Kim, beautiful song.
i saw mark at manchester last week, and he can be such a stupid man , live wise at the dancehouse was terrible, he took the audience for granted, he's a brilliant song writer infact the best but he just has a ego problem ,that was a bad interview
Haha! Yeah, he can be a little that way. He doesn't seem to give his fans much attention in a way. Which of course is sad...on the other hand you have to respect it.
yeah he's good. I love his guitar style. But, I still love Marks Lyrics more. That's a tough comment to reply too. Both artist are so amazing on different, levels. I'm also digging on The Deadly Syndrome and The Bowerbirds right now. Luke Temple to. So much great music to be discovered. Underneath all the top 20 crap lol!
Such, great beauty in the tragic, webs we as humans weave. Mark isn't afraid to speak from his soul and for that It's rare, genius. He's in a class of his own just like so few others. It's a damn shame we keep hearing artist like Akon, J. Lopez top 20 shit and crap, crap. When America offers so much in true lyrics. He's eccentric and a true, rare, soul. God Bless Him... KJO
well, at the show in Tampa, he told the sound guy to, and i quote, "turn the fucking sound system off because you don't know how to do sound." Later, when a girl asked him what kind of guitar he had, he said, "The kind that is going to bash you over the fucking head if you don't shut up."
As for the BO, yeah, that's true too. My friend knows him so we saw him in Tampa and St. Augustine, both times stanky... but that St. Augustine show was phenomenal.
i dunno what to say, Mark .... you're fecki'n grrreat. Come back to SF! We miss you and the Painters. First time i saw you play was at the Hotel Utha, early 90s. And now there is notihng but shite in the clubs.
He's amazing...I can relate to his feeling of not being good at other things...I scrape by my day job...his bravery to get out there and do it is to be commended
I wish someone like Neil Young could discretely catch Mark live somewhere and hear him sing, approach him post show and offer to sign him to his Vapor record label. That is what I would like to see for Mark.I think it might take someone of Neil's stature and experience to see the depth of what Mark is capable of. Mr.Kozelek did play Seattle The crowd was drunk, loud and disrespectful. I was lucky enough and was able to apologise to Mark for them, he was kind, cool and understanding.
Mark man your one of the great songwriters ever. Its a blessing you never blew up. Your music is true to your heart and who knows if you could write the way you write now if you had fame and fortune?
