What a great radio! The large speaker sounds fantastic and AM reception is really good. I'd also assume that it's from the mid 80s. Judging from the design, I'd guess it was made in 1983 or 84. At least in Europe radios introduced in 1983 looked this way.
I just picked up this same unit (7-4691) at my local thrift store. It is an amazing unit that tunes and sounds beautifully! Only issue with mine is the selector switch is hard to move, other than that and some scratches it is one of the best performing radios that I own.
Central Jersey is one of the toughest spots for radio reception, with mountains and valleys and bad terrain everywhere causing multipath distortion, so this performance with not too much static is remarkable. Great, timeless look to this unit, too. Thanks!
Nice radio but I find that the blue light displays cast too much light when they are in a darkened room. I'm light sensitive so I prefer the red LED displays on the old Sony's.
Jeez! How many different AM music stations can you pick up? We have none here, not even at night. All country or right-wing fascist talk. I used to listen to AM oldies on 1230 KWTX and that Stevie Wonder sounds EXACTLY right :)
I live within range of NYC and Philadelphia, as well as many local NJ stations, so there is quite a lot. Due to the large population, everyone wants to get their own slice of the pie, so a lot of small low-power stations remain on the air. The Gospel music station heard at the beginning of the video (1070 WKMB) as well as the strange Indian music station (1170 WWTR) are both 250-watt daytimers!
Oh, yeah! I listened to the radio when I was in the Newark airport (on the return trip from Germany, where I guess it didn't occur to me that I needed to) and it was glorious. I still have a couple of these really cheesy world band radios that I bought for like 8 EUR in a department store there, along with a bunch of German AA Batteries. I'm taking my DX-390 next time! (And inevitably coming back with a bunch of PAL video equipment that I won't be able to fit in my room)
My Mom got one of these new in the early 1980's, and gave it to my sister a few years ago. She is still using it, and it's never had any repairs! They sure do sound awesome.
Those radios are awesome. I had a GE portable that sounded awesome on AM. My brother took it on a boating trip and lost it! I was so mad. That is a really nice find. Gee, I wish we had some music on AM around here that sounded good. You get some nice sounding stations where you are. :) JC
This GE was picking up several distant stations that are normally only listenable on a good car radio. It really surprised me with its sensitivity on AM.
I used to use mine for DX'ing in Hi-FI. My Emerson CD/Radio combo is very sensitive as well but it does not have the nice high end of the old GE's. Still, it does sound quite good on AM in a warm sort of way. :) JC
If the Emerson uses a ceramic filter, you can replace it with one of a higher bandwidth. But many cheap radios actually run the audio output of the AM tuner through the 75 uS FM de-emphasis, as a cheap way to get all the muffled sound of a narrowband receiver with none of the better selectivity! On these radios just modifying the audio output of the AM tuner to bypass the de-emphasis will yield a good increase in treble response.
Interesting. I didn't know that. The Emerson is actually quite good on the highs, comparatively speaking. Those GE's just have that extra little sparkle that makes them sound great. On mine, the AM sounded every bit as good as the FM and maybe better because the high end is not nearly as crushed on AM as it is on FM. So, wide band AM actually sound more natural and open. Of coarse, I know I am preaching to the choir telling you that... :) JC
Very strange, whenever i watch videos, familiar names keep popping up! you, iTouchiPodez, and others! we all seem to share a common interest in types of videos i guess :)
neat clock radio i grew up with my parents haveing the silver ge in the top left corner. still have the instruction manual here somewhere if you want it.

Separate bass and treble controls on clock radios are rare. Thrift store find?

Yup! I paid $3.99 for it.

They must be going fast here. I don't ever see stuff like what you find, at the frequency you do here.
Awesome radio though.

Nice GE radio. I have always thought most GE small radios had better sound than most. other brands. This one really sounds nice.

That's a really good sounding radio! It also looks pretty nice, and I like the dial light. It's not usual on todays clock radios.
