Betty is beyond beautiful. She's smart and she's given back to her communities. As the white husband to an asian wife, it's good to see mixed kids embracing their identities. Whether our kids would endure difficulties being mixed was a concern we had. Being honest, I think that white-asians and white-latins might not face the same problems as some other mixed kids. No person should endure discrimination based on their ethnicity, especially kids.

Wow...Amazing...we are all homo sapien...yet we are all different and should embrace our differences. We are ALL of mixed ethnic groups regardless of the color of our skin.

I think what she is proud of is certain elements in the Asian (Vietnamese) culture worth admiring which isn't limited to location. From what I can tell from this clip, it's primarily concern with the identity crises issues people go through.

I know hapas who totally reject their asian side because "it's not the cool thing to do".
Betty is not like that at all. She keeps her last name Nguyen and increases awareness of events taking place in countries like Vietnam.
She is interviewed by an asian male in this news report, and treats him with dignity and all due respect. I don't see a lot of that in the American media. I think this says a lot about her openness and the type of person she is.

Not all of us do. I choose biracial. I insist that people to refer to me as Eurasian, mixed race, biracial, mixed Asian, hapa or half Asian. Any other terms I find unacceptable. It's something I get quite aggressive about :)

Some people are primarily attracted to others who are of their own race, and they needn't be stigmatized. With that kind of thinking, it'll be the "one-raced" people who grow up having the identity issues.
I just wish everyone would stop being such dicks about race. That's the whole reason why people go through all this unnecessary grief in the first place.

I hate, hate, HATE the term "hapa". Why is being part Asian singled out as a requirement? What's so special about that as opposed to being part any other race? Why can't a half black/half latino be called hapa, too?
Also, I highly disagree with the statement that everyone will be mixed in the year 2050 or whatever. Yes, interracial relationships are completely fine but it's arrogant to assume that everyone should be in one.

I believe Hapa was originally a Derogatory Hawaiian term to describe people who were half Hawaiian. I think as time went by the term was used to describe people of part Asian/Hawaiian descent probably because there's a lot of Asians in Hawaii.

Yes. Hapa is so much more than part Asian. The term itself is borrowed Hawaiian. Thinking it has to pertain to only certain people goes against the meaning. Hapa means part. Not half not 1/4. Just part. I'm Japanese Spanish Portugese Filipino Chamorran Hawaiian Welsh Cherokee English French Norweigian and Swedish. Even if you took the Japanese Filipino Hawaiian and Chamorran I would still consider myself a Hapa.
