  • I like my "art" simplistic and juvenile, so I love this.

  • I am glad this type of performance art is part of history and no longer exist. We are too smart for these wannabe avant-garde morons to spark a cultural nudge. If you examine closely these type of work were a bit too racists focusing on the stereotype of whites and did not include diversity issues to it's fullest. If they are going to question diversity go for broke.

  • @GenzorX They too are still stuck in their own realm and not realizing that others co-exist in their tantrum performance. Neglect is an Artist's worst enemy.

  • This gives me insane nightmares...

  • i didn't know there were so many weapons in a kitchen :O men, be careful not to offend your wives.

  • I saw this at an art museum a few days ago. This woman sounds she might come kill you in the night

  • dumb bitch

  • Pay attention to her body language and the piece is much more dramatic than first meets the senses.

  • Calm Down Dear!

  • Semiotics of Jumping Off a Bridge? I've met autistic kids that would say this is crap!

  • holla acha boy

  • @specstorm yo holla what up boy

  • They have her work at the Brisbane art gallery in Southbank

  • The first 46 seconds pissed me off. My wife is making beer batter bread as we type.

  • well I thought it was pretty funny, ended kind of abruptly though, would have liked some more space of her just standing there.

  • @omegapoint777 wow, homophobia much?

  • Incredibly boring and pretentious, and she ran out of ideas in the end and just used letters with a knife. How dull.

  • Dudez dis ol' woman is no artist mangg, srsly she sukz bad yo!

Lol joke, i actually consider it very interesting, i don't precisely like it, but i understand it, and i think it's a good example of video art.

Many things can be with the new concept of contemporaneous art though :p

  • @HBMHD is a child pornograpaher boylover member, under investigation by EUROPOL , mexican abductor guy and sexual child predator; please search in google: Antipedofilia Org CIA-P - Cristian sauter SlyG SlyRemixed

    Thanks!

    Joshua

    CIA-P

  • @Mystikel1 Lol, you think this works?, i could say you're Osama Bin Ladin, and no one would believe me, it's kind of the same thing, as i said before, people believing your words are as retarded as you.

  • @HBMHD Bin Ladem is a terrorist; paedophile is lower animal and worse than any terrorist, you are a boylover o child predator or pedophile. No more. Bye

  • "What's a kitchen instrument that starts with U?"

    "I don't know, Martha."

"Fuck it, I'll just spell the rest out like a crazy bitch."

  • Natacha Stolz puts this bitch to shame

  • Well I've found the most boring fucking video on youtube.

  • I sometimes wake up and doubt my sanity, but then I see I video like this and feel like I'll be alright.

  • that's right bitch...stay in the kitchen

  • she seems to present weapons.

  • ice pick at 2:56....I will never sleep again.

  • @kiwa007 Lol : P

  • crazy dead chik

  • she's not dead, and most artists are crazy for a reason...

  • I don't think it shows feminism. We were told in university that the activities in the kitchen can actually quite well be seen as different ways of hurting or even killing someone/body. Every movement can be seen as a sign of agressivness. It all depends on how you look at something.

Like in Dexter... before the movie starts, the activities show the inner side of Dexter.

  • @MsAliis So you listen blindly to what your professors say without thinking it out for yourself.

  • This is really stupid. art? I think not, more like some part of a creepy childrens tv show.

  • @lax988 Or maybe your idea of "art" is just a couple of centuries old. Just like if my grandmother heard Nine Inch Nails; she'd probably yell "Ugh, and this is supposed to be music? You sure? Not some creep randomly punching on a computer?".

    You're old, man.

  • @peterpuck365 You enjoy this b/c your mentally ill. You have to think that there always has to be some deep meaning. Like if I said the phrase in a video "the box is burning." with a picture of a burning box. You would be like "OMG!!! Thought provoking orgasm!!!" "THIS IS ART AT IT'S BEST!!"

  • @lax988 1. Deep meaning? This is as straightforward as "Star Wars" to me.

    2. Ok, lax. Either you'r older than my grandma, or you're fifteen. In the first case, please be advised that art in general, in the 150 years or so, has drastically changed. Music has gone beyond Strauss and squaredances, sculpture beyond Michelangelo, figurative beyond the Impressionists, and new art forms have appeared. If you're fifteen, on the other hand, do not worry: you probably just need to study and learn a bit.

  • @peterpuck365 I am glad that we both agree that you are mentally ill. :-D LOL You are what South Park calls a "Know it all Hippy" . Be advised that art is 150 years old my ass. Maybe to the art community there are "good" pieces of art, but to most people they do not care. Hell I have to see a nasty, bright orange, twisted metal rail "sculpture", outside my school everyday; is that art, to a very low percentage it is, but to the vast majority it is an eye-sore. @_@

  • @lax988 Yeah. Vasts majorities drink Coke instead of red wine, and dine at MacDonald's. Vast Majorities usually know shit.

  • @peterpuck365 I bet that you do not even know how to shit. so uptight that the world is ignorant of your definition of art that maybe you have forgotten how to. Have a nice long sit on the toilet and make some art of your own.

  • @lax988 It has already been done in the fities. That's old too, young lad. You're old-fashioned.

  • it's an incredibly amazing performance, BECAUSE OF its lengthiness

  • it's an incredible amazing perfomance, BECAUSE OF it's lengthiness.

  • @southsydney: What an incredibly ridiculous thing to say. If you don't care about art then don't watch art videos on YouTube.

@RuskieJTAC: Anyone who knows anything about art will tell you that moving image is indeed one of its forms.

  • It is supposed to be boring and tedious, that is the whole damn point of it. It echos the attitudes towards women at that time. It is extremely sarcastic and patronising in how it addresses a woman's role - in the kitchen, nurturing children and generally being treated like a moron. A classic piece of feminist artwork.

  • Comment removed

  • Why can't artists just paint and sculpt anymore?

    Get out(?) of the kitchen.

  • This should be called Autistics of the Kitchen instead

  • @enishicz28 how about you google performance art instead of ignorantly making fun of people with disabilities?

  • Shut up bitch, get in the ki- oh. Well. A sandwich would be nice.

  • @tributetolost id watch my mouth if i was you. you saw her with that nutcracker.

  • The most boring Pampered Chef show ever.

  • I went to see this in the Van Abbe Museum, I was intruiged... very agressive

  • the fact that she is mimicking the use of the utensils makes emphasizes that they are signs. also the way she exaggertaes her body's movements emphasizes her as a sign inside this system of signs.

  • is it possible that things once appreciated and important could fall out of our attention? i realize this may have been important in its time. but art is full of trends and this clearly will not connect with a modern viewer. besides, i think feminism may not really be empowering women. the more we impose our differences and sufferings, the more distant we become. its like wanting to be cared for but constantly saying you are misunderstood. people give up with you.

  • ugh how many times are we gonna have to watch this in art school

  • cut

  • Why is this not art? It makes a complex statement about semiotics, womanhood, and psychology. The fact that the language of the kitchen is exposed as being transposed onto the woman's body to trap her into a particular role in society is brilliant. Just as language is confining women to a specific world, it is also exposed as confining in general, i.e., there are no kitchen words for the last letters of the alphabet, so she literally can't fit these letters into her video format.

  • @OutsideTheBox28 brilliant, I like the end of the video but I always felt unsettled by it. Thank you for that insight.

  • BEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111

    the knife was the best.

  • Interesting way to question the value of semiotics especially in relation to the signifier and signified

  • Is it art?! Dont get me started about the problems with that word "art." Surficially semiotics meets bad performance artist with camera. I too love the anger. I also find it campy, even a bit contrived and boring. 50 seconds for the titles? (zzzz) I try to remember to put this film in the context of its own era, (no cable internet, cellphones) This one works for me much more as a feminist statement than a semiotic demonstration. I would like to think that was her point.

    chip neville, mfa

  • pagan, you're a schmuck

  • bah... i don't understeand... i'm studying art.. but i can't considered it art... come on guys... this isn't art!!!!!!

  • is that really such a valid question though? why can't we just solve this puzzle by make up a new word for all the things that's not art, thus skipping the need for this tedious discussion ever again? stop taking up my valuable poking navel time with your infantile comments!

  • fantastic, her anger is beautiful

  • This is the best fucking movie I've seen in days! I am in ecstasy from watching this. Have to stop typing so I can watch it again! I didn't realize the things were in alphabetical order until the end.

  • Shit! I've never seen this before.. really good!

  • love it. truly great...the concept and performance are well-matched.

  • What the hell is this? I just wasted 6 minutes and 13 seconds of my life. This is not art.

  • This is a 6 min video that critiques womens roles in society. Talks about the language of the kitchen itself.

Deadpan humor to critique. When a woman use a humor it is again a critique itself because women are not funny. Focus on linguistics. She highlights how words themselves continue to promote the status quo of the woman in the kitchen.

  • PSICÓPATA. AMERICAN PSYCHO IS THE TRURH, ahahaha

  • i want to watch this if i ever get high I laugh for hours at a time watchin this with my friends

  • I first saw this at the museum of the seams in Israel. It's awesome!

  • The slow pace is meant to make you stop and consider each item and how it is addressed. The violence of some of the movements is enhanced by the delicacy Rosler displays in handling the implements before and after use. This also emphasizes the purposefulness of the violent movements.

There are implements that cover the end of the alphabet but Rosler purposefully ignores them to punctuate her supposition that the housewife is a kitchen implement herself.

This film was considered radical in 1975

  • amazing :p loved it.. alot

  • strongly presented, great piece!

  • why does stuff have to be boring to be taken seriously

really interesting idea but just really boringly executed

  • Try something you think might improve on the orignial and post it as a video response. This was done in 1975 and the slowness is a device for you to take time to consider each word. Since this is 30+ years old try doing a remake.

  • Perhaps the slow pace is supposed to be a reflection of the mind-numbing boredom of women whose traditional role was in the kitchen?

There is lots more going on in the video than what first meets the eye.

  • @joanebeaudoin perhaps people see what they wanna see thats why everyone interprets art differently, however that doesn't take away from the fact that this woman stabbing a knife into the air like a kid with down's is rediculous and stupid.

  • Para eso ya tengo Barrio Sésamo.

  • brilliant

  • Wow! She cooks just like my wife!!!

  • hahahaha

  • Angry, humourous, scientific.

I have to think of Dara Birnbaum, when I see this.

  • haha for fuck sake!, i'm so glad i moved from a contemporary photography course to commercial photography!

  • bored chica here, can someone here help me?

  • badass

  • A friend of mine said that she used to know Martha. She's pretty cool.

  • Martha Rosler's 1975 'semiotics of the kitchen' is a classic piece. An authentic artist in a world full of bull.

  • arguments aside - it rules that this classic video is up here on youtube. martha rosler is one of my most favorite artists.

  • Art and science sometimes overlap, and sometimes don't. Quite why it's causing such a problem I'm not sure...Perhaps art is not as useful as science, but it is down to opinion. Science is something amazing that happens all around us; we learn it, observe it, but we don't create it. Art is the product of humans puzzling out life and finding ways to express potential answers in an ever increasing amount of ways. No point in arguing about it; each one offers a totally different perspective.

  • science defines what the artist imagines

    psy0p

  • If you guys are going to argue about your intelligence, at least learn to spell.

  • I agree.

  • Apron, Bowl, Chopper, Dish, Eggbeater...

    U, V, W, X, Y, Z

    Think about it

    Semiotics, the study of signs

It is science, the science of comminication and representation, how is that not usefull or relevant?

  • Internet, Youtube, video, keyboard, do you love it. This video is hot! Next time I cook i will do the same thing. This video should be called how to use kitchen ware for dumbies.

  • *Adam Sandler to the lunch lady in Billy Madison

"LADY, YOUR SCARING THE HELL OUT OF ME!"

Oh man, imagine telling her the meal sucked.

  • you don't get it do you

  • its not a question of whether or not i get it.....why don't people like this use their brains (if they have any) to become something useful like a teacher or a doctor or a scientist--u know, things that actually benefit the world.....waste of a life

oh, and the arts are gay and really easy

  • ok... so you don't get it

  • boy, someone feels superior....do you understand organic chemistry, astrophysics, molecular biology, or advanced calculus? no? then don't think you're smart or intuitive because u THINK u understand some weird BW video

  • i don't think i understand it, i know that i understand it. and all the things you mentioned have no relevance to what is being discussed. maybe if you area of study was more closely related to social sciences you would have a better understanding of the content of this video.

  • i don't think i understand it, i know that i understand it. and all the things you mentioned have no relevance to what is being discussed. maybe if you area of study was more closely related to social sciences you would have a better understanding of the content of this video.

  • you have to admit, there are more relavent and useful things to understand in life than art or social sciences...that's my point

  • no, that was not your point. you were trying to insult my intelligence and prove that you were superior to me in any way possible, even if it meant providing a completely incoherent argument.

"relevant" to what? Having an "understanding in life" of human equality (in this case, the inequality of women in 1975) is an extremely important thing.

  • what you're going to realize someday is that art and science are the same thing.

  • QFT

  • You were very quick to play the superiority card. maybe in fact it is you who believes they are inferior because you are not able to understand something out of your comfort zone. science cant be applied to everything. anyway it is easy to insult your intellegance when you debate in such an unintelligant way. there is no question of your intellegance because you haven't displayed it. You don't get it.

  • what do you know??...you're a leafs fan

  • Actually I suppose in some cases, it was a world changed for the better, in other cases simply altered. But regardless, it's not wise to dismiss a field of study without examining the history it played in defining a culture, a world. And you would be shocked at how much art history is involved throughout the development of every culture and country's history. It is steeped in tradition and history and well worth looking at.

  • @JerricaTF it doesnt cure cancer, feed or sustain anyone. so till it does go fuck yourself

  • @JerricaTF

of course, but would you ever consider shoving spagettios into your genitals or dancing naked to music and calling it art? its just not art, or its a very very low, stupid form of it.

  • @JerricaTF This doesn't challenge or define jack shit. Bitch needs her man to give her a good beating and shut off the camera.

  • Comment removed

  • @JerricaTF Hi , very ineresting. What fields are your degrees in? I dont mean that in a derogatory or rude fashion, more inquisitively. I would just like to know so that I an get a background to where your observation is coming from as it is an interesting point.

  • @polylyth *smiles* I had forgotten I even posted here. My background is health related, but the art degree I'm pursuing is in painting, if that helps at all.

  • @JerricaTF Ah, painting. Great Stuff. I think that very branch of artistic expression has it's own vocabulary , and only by taking notice of the development of these languages can we see where we are going as a society. However, seeing as every Tom-Dick-and-Harriet can claim to be an artist simply by doing something that other people don't understand, we may be seeing the gradual decline of Western Civilization.

  • I want some of whatever she's smoking..she reminds me of Britney Spears a bit.

  • thought it was good...

I like the category of the video....

    "howto & DIY".... Ironic

  • Classic video art

  • I would hate to meet her on a bad day.
