I had to get this CD twice...wore the first one out. Played this jame about 700 times or more. Over and over to take me away from those love songs that were included. This album is my favorite Bob Dylan. I also liked his Christian album, " You gotta answer to sonebody" : )
I adore the guitar work on this song the riff is the same throughout the whole song, but I could literally listen to this song for hours on end. This is one of Dylan's best songs in my opinion.
Three years ago, I was driving west into the sunset on old Route 66 (I-40) across the New Mexico desert and played this song in repeat mode. No other song seemed good enough at the moment.
@barques95 That must've been so cool. This song is like a great movie that I could watch over and over if I can complete it without starting it from the beginning if I issed one note. This is one of the few "repeat" button depress. : )
You know, the funny thing is that it was probably the waitress who wanted hard-boiled eggs. And Dylan's eggs weren't good enough for her. (Or she missed 'em because Dylan had escaped.) Thumbs up if you agree.
I love the line "I don't do sketches from memory..." That waitress was so superficial, he dismissed her immediately. "I know you're an artist, draw a 'pitcher' of me..." Yeah, he's an artist, dingbat, a musical genius!
This song simply could not exist without all of Dylan's Previous work. It's the culmination of a lifetime of work hope and dreams into something both tragic and yet beautiful beyond compare. In a sense Bob Dylan is at level of lyrical brilliance that few have attained when he is a washed up dirty old man.
may i step out a bit and offend most of you all....after 12 years of listening to this i DO believe it may be his Best work.....have played it to cornell students much younger than i...they are amazed at the poetry. combine the poetry, the continuo of music, and dylan's voice...this song, to me, stands up the the best of the vivaldi cello concertos; a modern pachelbel canon...this song is a masterpiece!!!!
@vazmo: I agree, but I wouldn't use the word "best". I think in some sense it is one of his strongest and most challenging artistic statements though. 16 minutes in the life of a lonely wreck...
Dylan originally wanted this song to last the whole side, but they after hard battle persuaded him to shorten it. I would love to hear this as a whole album. could you imagine the drift?

It's good to hear that Dyan is listening to Neil Young, even if someone is telling him to "turn him down". :)

Yeah and the bastard turned BEING a washed up dirty old man into an artistic plus. His songwriting skills age like wine. Amazing stuff.
