Saw him recently at a performance. He is truly a great athlete with tremendous skill and experience, which is something you have to respect, especially when you see it in person and up close. Nothing but respect.
Also, I see some Sanda guys practicing on mats in the background lol
wushu is divided in two parts, taolu and sanda, (forms and fighting), the flashy parts of wushu ( taolu ) is suppost to b acrobatic and flashy cos, wushu is a competitive "sport"
similar to gymnastics n figure skating. Having said that, that doesnt mean, wushu cannot b applied to real fights, real skills, or whatever U think might work in a real fight
I really like this vid! Those 720's are really great. I'm don't know a lot of wushu, so I've a question. Why is this nanquan so much different than other nanquans I see on the internet? This is the only nanquan i can find with jumps in it. I asumed all forms with the same name would be the same:p
The best wushu nanquan I have ever seen. Although I would prefer to practice the traditional version which can be just as aesthetically pleasing and even more realistic in combat.
Powerful... this guy is outperform most monks I know in the western world - there's a lotta fake asians teatching "making money" in the western world claiming to be monks or masters - I'd like to be taught by this guy. Thanks for posting
there isn't anything wrong with doing a 720 outside with nanquan. Its still a jumping technique that can still be used and its not against the rule to not use it. It really depends on the style that you like. If you like nanquan with just drop kicks, drop twist, etc and no 720, then thats really up to you to rather believe if its northern or southern. But if you notice, so many good competitors from china that does nanquan, MAJORITY of them would do a 720 =D
thats becuz the good ones all KNOW nan du's fuck ups choreo :P so they wanna do as less of them as possible, with 2 720's and 2 540's you only have to do 4 nan du jumps to get 2 full points :P which will mean ur chereo will get more flow instead of the 6-8 nan du routines on the european/world competitions
southern forms shouldn't have 720s. That's northern. Southern is supposed to focus on stances, power, and fast hands. Nan Quan is based primarily on Hung Gar and Choy Li Fut, whereas Chan Quan is based northern Shaolin systems, hence the jumping kicks.
Competition Wushu Routines practiced on gymnastic mats is not the same as the original arts they are derived from and they shouldnt be confused, although they commonly are which is a shame.
Competition routines have their place but maybe we should question why people are competing in how well they perform a standardised routine. Traditional Arts are much deeper than this.
it can be a shame that shallow people think that wushu is only about jumping and kicking and making crazy jumps, but we know better right :P
though i do like modern wushu alot as well as traditional wushu, i think u just can't compare these with each other anymore
traditional wushu are meant as a way of life, self defence, even religious believes, while modern wushu is just a sport, shows and competitions... u can't really compare them :P
just saying, the focuses in southern division used to be different from northern. The athleticism is still there, but is expressed in lower stances and fast hands, rather than higher jumps and kick
one thing I don't like in either division or 'sport karate' is how they break the flow of a routine to set up a jumping move
martial arts are supposed to have a use. this doesn't. it originally had a use, but not anymore. it's called crap. if you want to dance around, then actually dance instead of ruining the full intention of martial arts. say what you say about martial arts, but at least martial arts have more than one use. this is just one use, and it's not even the use that martial arts was intended to be. modern wushu is a disappointment to martial arts
but it DOES help people get more interested about the whole martial art idea
believe me, if someone practises for 10 years wushu (for flashiness), he/she is going to get interested into the REAL martial art and gonna think about the usefullness of every move, the flashiness is just something that attracts kids
when they do it 10 years and can't jump anymore or get injuries, they will want to practise the real thing
you my friend seriously epic fail in life. If you were to know wushu more better, why do u think we have a modern version of wushu called san shou? also if u think wushu is a disgrace in martial arts, why don't u watch some dui lian and see if its a disgrace or not. Even if its just a routine, wushu can still be use. If u wanna flame about wushu we might as well flame you instead of the sport. Gtfo kk thanks

when did they start doing running starts before jumping kicks? That's really northern looking=(
drchango2010 4 years ago
ok then u try doing a 720 without a running start :P good luck :P

drchango2010 4 years ago
southern styles have tumbling, alot of the times they are even more athletic than northern
720's really is just modern wushu and doesn't have anything to do with shao lin or nothern

that i agree
but it's just so damn hard to do a 720 without preparations :P
anway i think everyone agrees that difficulty movements f*ck up the choreography but it's still necessary and of course it just looks pretty cool :D

dude, if u don't like it, just don't watch, nobody asked u to like it.
it may be a dissappointment to u, but can i point out that wushu is more popular now than ever?
HA

so what ur saying is flashy stunts are more popular than true skill. stunts are over rated as is wushu

advanced san shou is taiji technique mixxed w/shuai jiao. wushu fails. you fail if you still think it's a martial art.

Wushu IS a martial art and it is very ancient.

but modern wushu is for show :)
ShaoBo 4 years ago
but that is leading wushu nowhere
taijicheng 4 years ago
that might be one opinion...
my opinion is that in the modern days, u don't have much real use for martial art any way
it's cool to know the art, but it's better to just make it a sport
btw, if u wanna fight, there is always sanshou :P
ShaoBo 4 years ago
go to shaolin to see what real kungfu is, it ultimately leads to the appreciation of meditation and buddhism
not fights, so with Taiji
taijicheng 4 years ago
dude, been there, seen that
the fact is still, no amount of qi gong can blok bullets or nucs
it is a way of life, and u really can't compare modern wushu with traditional, it's not the same anymore
i think u should just accept that modern wushu are for sports and not keep whining about it's leading wushu nowhere
if people want to practise something more tradtional, that's there own choice right?
it's not like modern wushu is giving traditional wushu a bad name or something
ShaoBo 4 years ago
wushu, being modernized, is no longer wushu
ultimately wushu is not meant for fighting, it is for self-defense and more importantly for cultivation of character and improvement of health
No more argument with you, please stop replying.

no i won't argue with u anymore
u have ur own opinion about wushu and i have mine
