Ha! Not dissimilar. And this came out 5 years after original Mobile Suit Gundam, back when all of entire anime fandom was Gundam-crazy, so that'd make sense.

Yeah, the animation is pretty damn good. Through, the music felt waaaay off track. But the animation, damn. Really good stuff.
And, very-very anime art style.

About the music: Yeah, sadly this was par for the course for Hisaishi in the 1980's. Something about Miyazaki's work touched off Hisaishi's orchestral instincts, thank goodness.

He said in the review that it was arguably the first successful OVA, which means that it was probably in the early 90's. So yeah, it's old.

In fairness, it was sort of a publicity stunt. The guy's very active on an otaku-focused YouTube-style Japanese video site (Nico Nico Douga), and he did this as part of a video for that site. I'll explain more on Friday (hopefully!!). :-)
