He is singing about the horses running fast as his life.. That his life is running like wild horses because he never got a moment to breath! Everytime,everyday concerts. Most of the people here do not understand it. Such people rarely get borned on our evil world. RIP vladimir vysotsky we all will never forget you.
DAMN! What an inaccurate translation (((( booohooo =( What the hell 'I'm not able to live'? At the same time, how can it be translated? 'I didn't have time to live out [my days]'? Naaaah...
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for posting this video with the English subtitles. I've always loved Vysotsky, but understanding the meaning of his words is truly sublime... RIP
I was introduced to Vysotsky through the movie "White Nights". I don't speak any Russian but I've been reading translations of Vysotsky's songs and the one song that interests me the most is called "Condemned to life" or "V dorogu zhivo ili v grob lozhis'..." in Russian. I've looked on Amazon or anywhere else I could find for this song with no luck. Can any Russian speakers on this board help me find this song?
He is singing about his life. The horses are his heroin addiction, alcoholism and life in the fast lane driving along a steep edge. But the horses never ran slower no much he whipped them or gave them water. And he couldn't finish his song. RIP
@meishern, you are the first here to see beyond the words and reach into his meaning. I tried to capture this in the translation, but it is clear I think in the original performance
@meishern Wrong. No heroin or alchohol. It's about his life, too fast passing by, singing he wants to make the horses (life) run slower. If I wouldn't succeed to live at least I will sing. Smth like that
you are right, pal. I'm Russian and understand the original text. He knew his life would be short and tried to accomplish as much as he could. He was making 2-3 concerts a day in the end of 70-th... and, eventually, had reached his limits. And, worth to mention, he was addicted to drugs and alcohol - the only way to support this rhytm of life and creativity.
@meishern Your are somewhat right, but what you forgot to mention is that he is signing about his life in Communist Russia, and the political oppression to the people during this era. There were many fantastic writers, actors, musicians, artists but you rarely hear of them from those days because individuality was not accepted. The 'sharp whip' is the strict state and the horse and it's rider is symbolic to the people.
I still can't figure out if this is about the inevitability of death due to aging or if it's about how he's going to commit suicide but wants to enjoy life for another minute first
Well, he lived life to the fullest, even beyond that. It's nothing to do with suicide. It's more about inevitability of the end if you're racing towards it... put in beautiful verses.
i love this song , it is his life , beautiful words and a lot of soul and heart in this music. genius! original genius... i

@litemc the horses are running along the edge of a bottomless chasm. how does that fit into your one dimensional assessment of this poem?
@mrvladimirish i think the fact mountain climbers write his lyrics on their tombstones would have touched him more than some Soviet memorial
@guadalahabraspirit yes, it is.

Poets do not live long in Russia. This is Vysotsky questioning how long he has to live.

Is that Mikhail Sholokov at 2.37? He died in 1984 so that might be the case. Anyone?

Why so many people today don't respect this music? It's more beautiful than all "hits of today" together!

Just Vysotskiy. No adjustments, and judges, no, and no. Even though there is no description, for this.
