I was introduced to Vysotsky through the movie "White Nights". I don't speak any Russian but I've been reading translations of Vysotsky's songs and the one song that interests me the most is called "Condemned to life" or "V dorogu zhivo ili v grob lozhis'..." in Russian. I've looked on Amazon or anywhere else I could find for this song with no luck. Can any Russian speakers on this board help me find this song?

He is singing about his life. The horses are his heroin addiction, alcoholism and life in the fast lane driving along a steep edge. But the horses never ran slower no much he whipped them or gave them water. And he couldn't finish his song. RIP

you are right, pal. I'm Russian and understand the original text. He knew his life would be short and tried to accomplish as much as he could. He was making 2-3 concerts a day in the end of 70-th... and, eventually, had reached his limits. And, worth to mention, he was addicted to drugs and alcohol - the only way to support this rhytm of life and creativity.

@meishern Your are somewhat right, but what you forgot to mention is that he is signing about his life in Communist Russia, and the political oppression to the people during this era. There were many fantastic writers, actors, musicians, artists but you rarely hear of them from those days because individuality was not accepted. The 'sharp whip' is the strict state and the horse and it's rider is symbolic to the people.
