  • Great video man.

  • @TacticoolGUY

    Thanks

  • Pepsi sucks coke rules

  • @BiG420ToMaTo420BuDs

You must be a democrat, lol

  • did you get a rash from touching the mineral spirits? after cleaning my mosin my hands are red and dry

  • @TheBaronvonbadass

No, LOL. I am a carpenter so my hands might be alittle rougher!

  • Just did mine, used the mineral spirits and Hot water rinse..then I cleaned and oiled the bare metal with Ballistol, worked great.. Its all cleaned up ! Thanks

  • FYI mineral spurts also cleans up rusty tools just thought I would trow it out for y'all

  • Currently going through the mineral process wish me luck! cleaning up a 1933 Mosin Nagant Hex Izzy ! =) Ty for the video

  • @shotokun16

    No worries, it works great.

  • yea mineral spirits work for mine got the cosmoline right off

  • It's clean!!!! Your video is great.

  • is their a brand of mineral spirits you would use? and what gun oil would you recommend for a first time cleaner? i got my mosin last Thursday. :D

  • @blah8369

No, I just used what what homedepot had. Good luck.

  • I used the mineral spirits method, and your right, it just melts off and disolves. Then used a toothbrust to make sure it was completely clean. All of the steaming and degreasers would take much longer and be alot more work. Thanks for posting!

  • @aceflyer32

    Glad it helped

  • genious just genious

  • @ILITTHEWORLDONFIRE

You must be talking to some one else, LOL. Thanks

  • great vid,, thanks for the info..just bought one of these..so now i will start cleaning..

  • I have a shallow long plastic tub I'm gonna soak my sks parts in spirits.

Can I just dry the metal with a towel after the spirits and oil it up? Or will that mess something up?

  • @TheJeffNasty It'll be fine. That's how I cleaned my mosin nagant. Cleaned a mosin with gasoline one time too lol. Do you know what hoppe's solvent is? Kerosene..

  • @TheJeffNasty

Im not sure. The way I did it worked great.

  • YP is allright good video man like and subbed!

  • Thanks for the info!

  • I seen iraqiveteran actually bake his cosmoline off in low temp oven, I have access to a autoclave domyoumthink it will work?

  • Thanks man. Any suggestions if my bayonet doesn't fit on all the way

  • Hey, Awesome video. You said a Hairdryer for the wood is best. About how long do you spend on Each part?

  • @TheKhakiNinja

You will be able to tell why you are doing it. Less and Less with start to come up from the wood.

  • ... ratio in one bucket

  • What is the water to mineral spirit rationing one bucket. Or is it just straight from the can

  • @TheGrillMaster2000

No ratio, straight mineral sprits. then rinse with water.

  • The Mineral spirits works great but what about the stock? I dont have the warm sun right now to do it the way you are?what other way may I clean up the wood? Thanx

  • @HDMann292

A hair dry work pretty good.

  • Great vid... Spent lots of time trying to find a easy way and found this the most efficient.

  • @SwampDonkeyEnt

    Thanks

  • yeah i just used hot water, dish soap, and a rough sponge then oiled everything back up. took me 30 minutes. although i have yet to clean the wood. Probably the same tactic but just make sure you really dry it off.

  • @blackjackraven700

You dont need a rough sponge with the mineral sprits. No scrubing required

  • your right about simple green it sucks awhile back I bought a unissued yugo M59/66A1 sks and that tging was caked with cosmoline so I watched video of a guy using half warm water and half simple green and leave it for a few hours so I did just that what happened it ruined the finish on my bolt so if any one out is thinking about using simple green on your firearms "DON'T DO IT" you'll be sorry

  • this vid was a great help to me, used the mineral spirits on my 91/30 got the riffle super clean. ran 80 rds through my riffle this past weekend and had no problems with sticky bolt and the riffle shot great. thanks for posting this man, saved me alot of hassle

  • @bhsp8ntballer

    Thanks, glad it helped

  • The easy way huh? As opposed to using a blowtorch and a straw?

  • @cader95603

    Yes, the easy way

  • Mean green not simple green. Harder to find then simple but a whole different cleaner.

  • Great vid very informative, I just recently bought a Mosin Nagant 90/31 this will go a long way toward helping me get it clean.

  • When done with spirits pour in jar with lid .Stuff settles to bottom after few days.Pour top off back in can ,saves money.Done it for years, good stuff.See ya.

  • @TheSemperfidude

    I already do that, thanks

  • Thanks for the info, you saved me a lot of grief.

And yeah, American Prepper is a douche. Best leave his name off your site.

  • Good video thanks a lot!! Get my rifle today. How did your stock turn out? Really don't want to refinish mine.

  • @gullo67

The stock didnt turn out bad, a hair dry would be the way to go though. Thanks

  • i like how you combined ideas from alright videos to make a good video

  • Nice just got sks technique will come in very handy thank you

  • I'd like to know how long you soaked them in the cleaner for? and how did the stocks end up coming out. Did it take a while?

  • why remove cosmoline?

  • @iknowitism It isn't meant for lubrication, it's meant for preserving the rifle, stopping it from rusting, etc. If you're going to store it, leave the cosmoline on but if you want to use it, it will stop moving parts from moving properly.

  • Hoppe's #9 is pronounced like hops in, The rabbit hops over the log.

  • @bingeebob

    OK, LOL

  • Thumbs up if you still say "Hoppy's" #9

    @bingeebob

  • @Studi037 thumbs down if you never did

  • @bingeebob ...bet you $5 even the Hoppe family (owners of Hoppe's) they'd say "Hoppy" --they should know how to pronounce their own name!

But lol what does any of this have to do with using mineral spirits to remove old cosmoline?

  • @Studi037 I just checked out their website , holy crap you are right! I've been saying Hops my entire life, this is world-shattering news

  • Good to know mineral spirits will work. I have always used either brake parts cleaner if outside, or Drummond Quick Peel inside. Quick Peel works well, just wear gloves it will strip the oil from your hands quickly.

  • Thanks for making this...how long are you leaving your receiver parts in the Spirits before doing a final rinse in the hot water?

  • @k4ylr

I left mine in for about 5 mins but it works faster then that.

  • I know the video is pretty easy to follow, but I have several friends who could use a text step by step of this, do you know if theres any on the net?

  • @domnikoli

No I have not put any step by step directions on the net. Just this video. I quess you could write it down for they off of this video.

  • @usfreedom22 Actually, quick look over my rifle and everything is easy as pie to break down and set up, don't even need text. Gonna do the mineral spirits tomorrow. Thanks for the great guide video!

  • how long did you make the pvc pipe?

  • @d3rkaderk4

two inches longer then the barrel.

  • Moh Zeen :)

  • Lawl I love how the pepsi can is already empty

  • Great video, and very intelligent, but...either you are a giant, or that was a 2" PVC.

I've been around a lot of PVC and that sure looks like 2" on camera, but maybe its the angle.

  • @tzychess

Yes it was 2" pvc, I just mis spoke.

  • How do you finish off your stocks after you sweat off the cosmo? I used oven cleaner on my SKS stocks then sweated it off in the Desert heat (temperature about 102-106 degrees). I kept spraying and wiping until it no longer exuded cosmo. Then I handrubbed the stocks with Tung oil. It gave them a nice finished/shiny look.

  • @applevalleyjoe

I rubbed it down with hoppes gun oil. You can use any type of wood oil.

  • Did you check between the buttplate and the wood? It gets super nasty in there

  • @Sonofagun556

    Yes

  • do you purposely turn your pepsi tab like that? my father does that and it drives me nuts because he wont give the reason why he does it

  • @BigJT2010

Yes I do. The reason I/we do it is so we know what soda is ours when there are other people around drinking soda. I work with three guys and we all drink pepsi.

  • BTW, Good job on the video, Really helped me plan an attack! :)

  • Been doing my homework too and found this video. I think this is the way to go. So, to be clear, it's mineral spirits then water or break cleaner to remove the remaining mineral spirits out/off the metal parts then gun oil? I would like to take an air compressor to it afterwards but as it is, I don't have access to one and the time in between the process or removal and finding a "compressor", it might dry on it's own. Maybe a hair dryer and then dbl check all nooks and cranny's for wet spots?

  • You dont need to dunk it in water ok just blow it off with compressed air. if you want to clean off the mineral spirts use a can of carbarator cleaner. than blow it off again but you need to wipe it down with some Brake free spraid on a cloth or some other penatrateing oil to keep rust from forming. DONT USE WARTER.

  • @dantheman7624

Why would I want to wast the money on carbarator cleaner to clean off the mineral spirts when I can use hot water. Water doenst hurt the metal. You blow off the water just like you would blow off the carb cleaner and wipe it down with hopps oil. Guns get wet all of the time in real world service. As long as you dry it off and treat it with oil, the metal is fine. ITS OK TO USE WATER!!!!!

  • @usfreedom22 cool to each his own i just dont use water at all. rust is why i dont use water. carb cleaner works good too if you want to spray down those gunky 22 rifles that have had a box of 500 rounds through it. cleans off the carbon.

  • Great video! Thanks for taking the time.

  • Awesome video!!! my buddy and i are picking up are rifles next week and for sure will use mineral spirits thanks for the tip freedom!!!

  • how long do you let them soak

  • Were do I get mineral spirt

    Lowes,walmart,target ???

  • i used grease remover nd balistol on the metal my problem is the wood can i use 220grit sandpaper on the wood? i too live in FL ovin this cool weather and watching my neighbors freak out like its day after tommorow omg i think i saw dennis quad lol its not even cold 69 hah

  • do you want to clean mine for me?

  • Spray brake cleaner.

  • Hey thanks for posting this vid. Will be getting my first Mosin soon, and was wondering if simple green was really that great. Now I know that mineral spirits will be more effective, and no scrubbing required.

  • Can't you just get boiling water rather than mineral spirits? Since heat removes the cosmoline I thought that would be a suitable method.

  • @Deathofblades

It is harder to get it out with boiling water.

  • @usfreedom22 I see.

  • what is so bad about theyankeeprepper?

  • @HuntFishGearOutdoors

Nothing. I like Yankee, some others have a problem with him.

  • @HuntFishGearOutdoors YP Blocks people, FREQUENTLY. I added a comment once about food poisoning and canning, I was trying to be helpful, and he took it as an insult..

  • I like the pepsi part. Pepsi is # 1

  • @GotJesusJenna

    You got that right, LOL

  • Thanks for the heads up. Much appreciated.

  • Just picked up my mosin this afternoon, can't wait to take all that crap off and take it to the desert next week!!

  • I just picked up a Mosin Nagant yesterday and i gotta do the Cosmoline removal process..how is it to disassemble the bolt section (where the safety is,sorry, not sure of exact name of the part yet..)

  • @anemalxj -nevermind,i did a search and found out how to disassemble the bolt..thank god for youtube videos..

  • was pretty interested in what you were saying till you pulled up that Pepsi can, then I hit the dislike button.

  • @polako68

    Hater, LOL

  • Thanks for the info. I just picked up a Draco AK pistol and that thing is nasty. I'll be cleaning it this weekend for sure.

  • glad i was doing it right, i never looked it up for my mauser k98 and sks, i just dived into it by putting all the parts in a tub filled with mineral spirits

  • i just love your video and yes Ive cleaned all my mosin's with minerial sprites

  • A hair dryer also works, but be warned it will shoot the crud all over the place.

  • Even easier/cheaper method: take all the metal parts and boil them. The cosmoline will float to the top, just fish out the clean parts and towel dry. For the wood use WD40. The cosmoline literally melts off. This also helps seal the wood and gives it a nice finished look. Hope these tips helped. Enjoy your mosin nagants. They are great guns!

  • I used a gallon sized paint tray, filled it up mineral spirits. The shallow angle of the tray allowed me to fit all the parts in the deep end as well as submerge the receiver end of the barrel, about 10-12 inches of it. When that's done soak the other end. Hope this gives someone a nice alternative to your technique.

  • im in fl aswell did u get these locally or online?

  • Thumbs up for Pepsi!!! Great video bro.

  • it's "hoppes"..."hops"....Not "Hoppies"...faggot

  • @bobcrawman34 Damn, how could you tell he was a faggot just by watching a video? If people who mis-pronounce odd names are faggots, then I guess people who have no videos of their own and feel the need to call people faggots are lower than the floor scrubber at the gay peep show. Thanks for the bench. Don't commit suicide!

  • @bobcrawman34 You are a Duechbag!, don't know if I spelled it right but you know what I mean!... Go Fuck your faggot self!

  • @bobcrawman34 Wow! You are a waste of air. Did you learn all the from the gay porn sites that you visit? Do you even know what you are? You seem to know a lot from a gun cleaning video. get a life asshole!!

  • @bobcrawman34 It actually is pronounced "hoppies" or "hops" depending on who you are and how you learned to say it. Learn a thing or two before you decide to act like a jackass.

  • @almondboy2 New production guns almost never have cosmoline on them. It is generally used on surplus firearms (Mosin, SKS, etc.) because it prevents rust when the firearms are stored for long periods of time. So, if you buy a new gun or a surplus one from a prior owner, it will rarely have cosmoline. Buy a surplus gun from a store, expect to have to clean it.

  • Is there ALWAYS gonna be Cosmoline on a new bought gun? If not, how do you know whether there is Cosmoline on it? Thanks.

  • and some nagants are great use caution when buying 91/30 was named that due to it was started in 1891 to 1945 the older ones have more issues the 1930s-1937 had best run on the 9130 u can also get a chmaber insert to bring in down to 7.25 bullet flash supressor,DUE NOT BUY AT SCOPE MOUNTS NIGHTMARES stick with the russian made go with 4x12x44 for target got 3 in at 1000 yds going thru steel plates u can get a good one for 89-110 dont spend more then that u can by in bulk

  • Great clip freedom ,for old and newbies,A simple clip with truth ,and helpful to all thanks Freeedom, And oh thanks Pepsi no doubt in a can or go home !! 21 nagants done 12 mausers,2 cetmes ,and 3 50 cal something keep rockin freedom

  • Thanks for posting and sharing this informative video. Mineral Spirits do work the best and it dissolves the cosmo except when its in clumps, but with the 20-30 min bath it will address that concern. I also use a heat gun especially in and around the chamber area as it is where it is harder to get to remove just be careful in handling as the metal heats up fast and melts away the cosmo and like you said do a thorough cleaning like after a day of shooting at the range and you're good.

  • do you mix the mineral spirits with water in that little tub or just put those parts in pure mineral spirits??

  • @darynschultz

    Just mineral sprits.

  • @usfreedom22 Lol i just take a roll of paper towels to the field and shoot it and wipe the cosmo as it runs out of the gun. I do check the bolt and barrel before I do this. Its lazy its definatley not effective, but hey the cosmo would hurt anything sitting there, Ive got 22 of the damn things with all the different variants of the dang things. Pepsi rocks, great vid! long live the mosin nagant!

  • @usfreedom22 how did you get that crap out off the freaking wood Dude, and how in the hell did you get the day off

  • @usfreedom22 hey freedom are mineral spirits bad to breath in? do you need a mask... im asking kinda late because I'm doing it right now but just curious haha

  • @twiggyuno

    Its like paint thiner

  • @darynschultz just wondering do you smoke a lot of pot?

  • @badmojo7777 no why do you think that lol

  • Love your video!!! Fellow Floridian here, ever been hog hunting with a mosin before? my buddy and i are looking for a cheap way to get into the shooting sports, kids on a college budget, we are lookin at mosins because we can have a scoped full-bore rifle with a bunch of ammo, nice stock and krylon camo job for less than an ar15 lower.

  • Great job with the PVC!! I can't tell you how many times PVC has saved my ass. I'll have to post a video with all my PVC projects. I'm going to have to get me a mosin very soon now that Christmas is almost over. I have been wanting one for quite some time!! Thanks for sharing, take care.

  • you know what fucking sucks? i live in alaska. no sun right now.

  • Great Idea with the pipe..... I just cleaned my guns... wish I would have watched this first..!

  • Good job on the video. Ive been using mineral spirits for years in my solvent tank for auto parts so I suggest if you know some one use a automotive type solvent tank it saves tons of time and effort. just throw you parts tub in it and turn on the pump on the parts cleaner and walk away it will do most of the work for because the mineral spirits keeps moving and flushing the cosmoline out of the parts. Oh by the way your absolutely right ( PEPSI ROCKS- coke sucks)

  • Just got my Mosin nagant yesterday and have been viewing a few videos trying to find the best way to remove the cosmoline. I'll try your way. What Oil do you use afterwards ?

    thanks.

  • I'm glad youposted this video. I bought my first Mosin Nagant this week and until I saw your video I was uncertain how to clean the cosmoline from the rifle. Thank you for saving me the time.

  • good 2 cents thxs

  • cool system wish i had thought of that pvc thing for the barrel on mine. Personally i did the whole job with a hairdryer and a milk jug for the small parts and just kind of did the stock bit by bit (not sunny where i was living at the time). seems like you got a really good system going though.

  • I'm a Dr. Pepper fan..... other than that good video! thanks for the info!

  • I have Mosin-Nagant 91/30 parts in the mineral spirits right now. I love this video. I made an aluminum foiled lined trough from 3/4 of a mailing tube (since I don't have any PVC big enough) for the barrel. Since it is not sunny or warm, I am going to slap together a little "greenhouse' of plywood, black paint and a plastic wrap "window" for sweating the wood parts.

  • i like how there is 5 dislikes

  • gasoline is the best cosmoline remover and at $3.50 a gal its also the cheapest. good vid though.

  • Just got my 81/30, and it's DRIPPING with Cosmoline! Your process seems the easiest and most effective, will be doing it soon. Speaking with a buddy of mine.... He suggested spraying down all the metal with WD-40 after bathing in hot water and Dawn dish-washing liquid (post mineral spirits).... Any thoughts on that? Thanks for the time spent making/posting the video! I also live in FL. Did all the Cosmo sweat-out of the stocks? Did you refinish/seal the stocks? I'm considering Tru-Oil.

  • thx man

  • did you a CLR to clean your gun

  • Me, I just got some simple green, spraed some in the chamber let it sit about 10 minutes, took and old tooth brush and scrubbed the cosmoline out. I didn't worry to much about the entire gun, just enough to take care of the sticky bolt problem. Worked well.

  • Haha You Have exactly 5 dislikes also. Lol Great Vid

  • nice channel and useful video's..

  • Hellz yeah! Thank you Youtube for allowing people like you to help a a guy like me find out how to clean cosmo who never has done this before. I just bought me a Yugo sks and it is like holding a tree log with it cover in sap. I looked around and I like your video the best. Especially about the wood. Thank you A thumbs up and a fav on this vid. Cheers from Utah!

  • fantastic, im going with this video as my guide to cleaning my new rifle. thanks for posting.

  • Try plugging one end of the barrel and fill with the mineral spirits. So that you need not use so much, and scrub the outside since its simple to do, and have the back end to sit in the box with everything else as the final step. Pin this for reading (or add in a bubble to the video).

  • @Vydonis

Thanks but the hole point was not to have to scrub anything but good idea though

  • @usfreedom22 After you strip the cosmoline off the barrel in the PVC Pipe, do you pour out the mineral spirits and pour in the hot water into there?

Also would a cleaning rod wrapped with a very very thin towel be a good method for cleaning and drying the inside of the barrel?

  • @ usfreedom22! You have viewers up here in Canada! Freedom I certainly appreciate your video and it is certainly timely . I just ordered a Simonov SKS and a Mosin as both are very inexpensive and fun. I had a question about the duration of time you had the parts soaking in min. spirits, ie you mention 15 - 20 minutes... did you remove any of the cosmo with a rag or anything prior to the soak? I also viewed Iraqveteran's vid on it. I do also like your pvc tube idea!

  • @samsplacci

Well thanks for watching! You dont even need to wait 15 mins but i did just to be safe. No I didnt wipe off anything. It works great, nice an easy. You will love it. Just shot my mosin for the first time this week, I love it. Good luck.

  • Agree, hot Simple Green got most of the cosmo off but had to spend a few hours brushing it too. Did my second one with mineral spirits, worked like a dream. I cam up with the pvc pipe thing too, used 3", plenty of room with space left over. You are showing 2" pipe not 4". Needed 1 gallon and 1 pint of spirits to submerse the barrel. Save the used spirits, can be used again to clean cosmoline.

  • Props on the PVC pipe dude! I never would've thought of that. Thanks for sharing!

  • @444QUAD444

    Thanks, It works great.

  • mosin nagants rock!! they are affordable and have quite the history,i have a 1917 model carbine and i love it,the cosmoline has long been gone but i might try the mineral spirits,i keep it real clean but it never hurts to give it a bath once in a while.

  • @dntlss

    Yes they do! Thanks

  • Did you have any issues with "sticky bolt" after cleaning your Mosin's this way? I am trying to get my issues with that solved... I may have to try this method... Maybe the chamber will come out cleaner this way? Thanks for the video!

  • @Salvo66us

No Issues with sticky bolt. This is a easy way to clean cosmoline. Make sure you take you bolt apart to make sure every part gets cleaned. If your not sure how to disassemble your bolt there are many videos on youtube to show you how. Good luck

  • I cannot buy casmoline in the UK but if I could I would use a ton of it on tools and cars. Just look at that silver bolt, it looks like it just came out of the factory. Nothing else I can find can do such a good job for so many years.

  • @SuperMangn

    I know, its great stuff

  • After taking them out of the mineral spirts and putting them in the water after that do you lubricate the parts? and with what?

  • @AFeebleMind

Yes I always lubricate all of the metal on my guns even after I go shooting while Im cleaning them. I use hoppes gun lube but I just hear of using 2 parts Moble one and 1 part trans fluid. Its what a gun guy I know uses. When I find out for sure I will do a video on it.

  • That is pretty much the process I use. I only get the cosmoline out of the action and bolt. I will let the rifle sit in the sun and wipe it down if it is overly greasy. Cosmo is a rust proofer and I don't see any reason not to keep it on non-moving parts.

  • @eatont9999

    Thanks

  • Glade i found your channel . was going to use simple green.

  • @millster101

Yea, simple green sucks, LOL. You will love this way! Good luck
